    3. Carlton Sanford covers John & Clarissa (Sanford) Jennings in his book, but only so far as their offspring. (pp. 267, 485) "2292. Clarissa Sanford (David 987, Joseph 417, David 141, Samuel 35, Ephraim 6, Thomas 1) b. in Shoreham, VT; d. in St. Louis, MI; m. John C. Jennings. They had 4 children. "5372. John Jennings. "5373. Henry S. Jennings, d. in Stanwood, MI. "5374. Reuben Jennings. "5375. Jane Jennings, d. in St. Louis, MI; m. John Baney." At least that gives you the next geographic leap ... Good luck! 3. It has been quite a while since I've seen discussion about the possible connections between the Westmoreland co. VA Sanfords and the Lunenburg co. VA Sanfords. I've recently been looking over the last string, and I have some questions and comments. (1) Regarding the Robert Sanford who married Mary Muse: What is anyone's current thinking about whether Mary was the mother of all his children? (His will makes reference to wife Mary, sons Augustine and Robert, and son Joshua "and his mother Mary Sanford," possibly implying that she was not the mother of the other sons.) (2) Regarding the Robert Sandford "Junior" who married Frances Longworth: Is there any possibility that this Robert could have been the one who also married Mary Muse? Dates are problematic, because the marriage to Mary Muse seems to have taken place no later than 1726, and in 1732 a Robert Sanford petitioned Westmoreland Court for the portion of the estate of John Longworth due daughter Frances, with whom Sanford had intermarried. On the surface it would sound as if Robert and Frances were married at that time; but is it possible Frances was deceased, and Robert was actually suing for the portion of the estate which should go the Frances' heirs (i.e., their children)? Otherwise, why was it necessary to sue for this inheritence? (I do not have a copy of the court papers themselves, and it may be that they make it clear that Frances was alive at that time; but if there is some ambiguity in them, is this a possible reading?) (3) It has been speculated that the Robert who shows up in Lunenburg co. is the Robert who was the son of Robert who married Mary Muse. Do we have any evidence, pro or con, as to whether Mary Muse was the mother of all of this Robert's children? (4) Has anyone discovered any evidence of the maiden name of Frances, the wife of John Sanford of Lunenburg co. who died ca. 1762? (5) Has anyone ever seen a marriage record for the John Sanford, son of the above John, who allegedly married Nancy D. Roberts, perhaps ca. 1790? One would expect the marriage to have taken place in Lunenburg co., but it apparently isn't recorded there. How about neighboring counties in VA or NC, especially Granville co. NC where there is some suggestion that this John Sanford may have lived? Richard O. Johnson P.O. Box 235 Grass Valley, CA 95945 [email protected]

    3. Does anyone have a Pierce Sanford in their line? He was in Orange Co., VA in the late 1700's. He was bondsman/witness for several marriages in Orange Co. His daughter was Sarah (Sally) Sanford who married James Yates in 1789 or 1799 there. They are my ggg grandparents. Have been unable to trace the ancestry of this James either, there are several in this time period. I cannot find him listed on any of the surname lists, would appreciate any info on him. Other names are Poulter, Ransdell, Kirkland, Pinkston.

    3. I am interested in the ancestry and descendants of Thomas Sanford and his wife Dorcas --?--. They were living in Caldwell Township by 1770. The records might indicate that they were in Acquackadonk (31 spelling versions of that name found so far- one starts with an H). Their farmhouse has survived to the present, but is currently endangered by owners who want to tear it down. I am trying to add to the documented history of the property, particularly by finding out more about the family who built it. I am not a descendant, so I have little to go on with this family. Any help would be apprediated. Regards- Bev Crifasi

    1. Another account of Thomas Sanford (1607/08-1681)
    2. David L. Dickman
    3. Before me is a copy of "The Compendium of American Genealogy, Vol. VII" published in 1942 by The Institute of American Genealogy. The entry in the Immigrant Ancestors section for Thomas is as follows: "SANFORD, Thomas (1607/08-1681), from England in the "Arbella," with Gov. John Winthrop 1630; settled at Milford, Conn., 1637; m. 1636/37, Sarah -- (d. 1681)." This does not entirely agree with the account in Carlton's book, and no sources are offered for it. Carlton states on page 67: "It is tradition among many Sanfords over the country that Thomas Sanford came over to this country as a member of the John Winthrop Colony in the year 1630. I find no proof of this. It is, in fact, quite safe to say that he did not come with him." Does anyone care to comment? Is there a complete passenger list? The deed of the homestead bears date Jan. 17, 1767. The old house was soon torn down and then a new one built, which is still in use [1913]. He was an extensive farmer and besides did an iron smelting business in Sandfordtown. He became the owner of the Iron Works in Weston, Ct., known as the Forge, which he later transferred to his sons Levi, David and Oliver C. It was said that this enterprise was the first of its kind in America. He also conducted a profitable grist mill. The iron works were destroyed by a flood in 1805 and were never rebuilt, the business being removed to Valley Forge. He enlisted in 1777 in the Connecticut Militia under command of one Captain Read. Upon the landing of the British of the burning of Fairfield, this company was ordered out for service. Starting out in the night they met the enemy near Perry's Mill on their march to Danbury. It being dark and foggy the company was surprised and all taken prisoners. They were sent to New York and confined in the old Sugar House of Revolutionary memory. There, with his companions, he suffered about all that mankind can endure. (Conn. Men in Rev., p. 493). He was made a Freeman of Redding before 1778.
