    3. Hello all.... This is a joint letter to all of you researchers..... I belong to the RAMEY-L sur name list and the folks on the list were scamed BIG time..... that is sCamed not sPamed... There was a gentleman ? on the list who said that he was involved with or owned a company that made CD's....that he would make a CD of the book of the Ramey family that is rather hard to get ahold of if others would be interested in purchasing the CD's... 25.00 each...... needless to say quite a few ordered the CD and sent checks....the checks were cashed right away....it has been weeks since he said that he mailed them and NO one has received the CD...... So P L E A S E ...... be very careful out there...IF this is a scam, then it would be easy to duplicate this with other groups..... this man even has a Home Page...which would be easy to do just by lurking for a few weeks and picking information up from those of us who are freely handing out the data....... I have a copy of the book so didn't order the CD...... the man has a Payson Utah address....... I hope that we are wrong about this person, but it doesn't look good..... He probably gave the wrong name too............ Jeannie <>< [email protected] The best form of spiritual excercise is to touch the floor regularly with your knees. <>< <><

Hi sandi! The person was probably an AOL subscriber and this happens when someone on your list posts a message in HTML. It screws up the Digest and AOLer's seem to get the Digest in an unreadable red. Hopefully, RootsWeb will soon be making some adjsutments that will prevent people from posting in HTML (bounce their message back to them). This will be a blessing since this is beginning to become a daily problem on lots of lists. Sharon

    1. Mother's Day Quiz
    2. Barbara Jean Green
    3. MOTHER'S DAY QUIZ In honor of our mothers, here's a little quiz regarding some terms about women you may find in your genealogical research. 1. What is a woman called who is named in a will to distribute the estate? (a) executrix (b) exheres (c) estafette 2. Your great-grandmother was a mantua maker -- should you put that in the family history? (a) no (b) yes (c) depends on how sensitive your relatives are about this occupation 3. What is the term for a woman whose husband deserted her, who had illegitimate children, or was a discarded common-law wife? (a) relict (b) consort (c) grass widow 4. What is the genealogical term for a lineage that has no male heirs to carry on the surname? (a) de bono et malo (b) daughtered out (c) decessit sine parole 5. While reading court records you find the term "de ventre inspiciendo" used regarding something they did to your great-great-grandmother. What does that mean? (a) the court inspected her handling of the estate of her late husband (b) examined her abdomen to determine if she was pregnant (c) examined her to see if she was mentally competent 6. If you are involved in matrilineal research, what are you really doing? (a) tracing your maternal line: i.e., daughter, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, etc. (b) tracing all of your mother's ancestors (c) tracing all the females in each line. 7. The condition or state of a married woman is legally referred to as: (a) cursetor (b) non compos mentis (c) coverture 8. ANSWERS TO MOTHER'S DAY QUIZ 1. (a) executrix. Exheres means disinherited and an estafette (French) is a courier who rides a horse. 2. (b) Yes. Mantua maker refers to one who practices the art of fashionable dressmaking which required an apprenticeship. 3. (c) grass widow. 4. (b) daughtered out. De bono et malo means "of good and evil" and decessit sine parole (often abbreviated as d.s.p.) is the Latin for "died without issue." 5. (b) A de ventre inspiciendo was a writ which was sometimes issued by a presumptive heir-at-law which required the sheriff to summon a jury of matrons and a jury of 12 men to inquire if the widow was pregnant. The matrons examined her and reported to the male jury who returned the decision to the court of chancery. 6. (a) tracing your maternal line: i.e., daughter, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, etc. 7. (c) coverture. A cursetor was a vagabond or vagrant and non compos mentis means not of sound mind or in a state of lunacy. 8. (a) take the oath of allegiance. 9. (c) Virginia (because seven of America's first 12 presidents were Virginians). 10. (b) 1914. Congress proposed that Mother's Day be celebrated the second Sunday in the month of May. It came about at the request of Miss Anna Jarvis, who wished to honor the memory of her mother who died May 10, 1905. She had marked her mother's passing yearly by wearing a white carnation and organizing special prayer sessions at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in her hometown of Grafton, West Virginia.

    2. David L. Dickman
    3. Daniel Sanford was born 17 February 1813 in Halcottsville, Delaware, NY to Charles Clark Sanford and Mary Smead. Calton Sanford notes that he "went to Wisconsin as a young man." Yesterday I received a copy of the Surrogate's court papers for his father, Charles, and he is there referred to as living in Beloit, Mitchell Co, Kansas. I would like to determine if Daniel was married, and any descendents he may have had. This is a part of an ongoing (and ambitious) project to locate all the descendents of William Sanford and Huldah Hull of Middletown, Delaware County, NY. We have so far compiled something over 770 descendents and their spouses, but there are possibly/probably thousands to go. Join the fun! Contributions to the cause are welcome! 1. SANFORD - Lynn MA
    2. VEWhite
    3. I'm new to the list so I figured I'd start with a line that has been stumping me for a while. My husband descends from a John SANFORD Jr., born 10 Feb 1810 in Lynn MA to John and Mary _____ SANFORD. John and Mary had 3 children born in Lynn MA according to the published VRs. -- Mary Jane b 10 Nov 1806 John -- see above George Jackson b 12 Aug 1812 The family evidently moved to the Roxbury area, although I don't know exactly when this occurred. Does anyone have access to the Roxbury MA records to see if John and Mary had any more children? I don't know when or where John and Mary died, either. John Jr. married Lucy Ann DAGER in Roxbury MA in 1834. Lucy was the daughter of Joseph and Martha (TUTTLE) DAGER of Lynn MA. John and Lucy moved to Worcester Co. MA, and John died in Framingham MA in 1863. Lucy survived him and moved back east to live (probably with family). She died in Point Shirley MA (now Winthrop) in 1892, but her body was shipped back to Framingham for burial. John and Lucy Ann had the following children, all born in Roxbury as far as I know: John [Francis?] b. ca 1836; m. Eliza Ann GREEN in Marlboro in 1859 -- our line George E. b. ca 1838; m. Susan E. GREEN in Framingham in 1872 Joseph W. b ca 1842 d. 1867 in Framingham MA Hannah b. ca 1843 d. 1856 in Framingham MA Ann b. 1846 John [Francis?] SANFORD was a carpenter. He moved around quite a bit but seems to have stayed in Worcester Co. MA. Eliza Ann died in 1887 in Wayland MA and is buried in Lakeview Cemetery, Cochituate MA in the same plot as her daughter Ida Louise (SANFORD) LAWTON and her father, Lewis GREEN. John [Francis?] survived her, but then he just disappears. Did he remarry? John [Francis] and Eliza Ann had the following children: Clara Maria ("Carrie") b. 1864; m. Frank E. WOODS 1884 in Natick MA George F. b. 1867 m/1 Ethel ____ m/2 Hattie ___; d. 1958, lived in Litchfield CT Ida Louise b. ca 1871; m. a Mr. LAWTON; d. 1911 Alice Minette I would love to know more about this family. I especially want to know what became of John [Francis] SANFORD after his wife died. A lot of what I know of this family is from vital records, family photos and letters, obituaries, and oral interviews with living relatives. But obviously there are gaps. This family isn't listed in the Thomas SANFORD book, which I checked personally. A friend checked the Pres. John SANFORD book and didn't find them there, either. But they had to have come from somewhere. <G> I appreciate any help you can give. Vickie Elam White
