Dear Paula, Alfred Sanford WOODRUFF #3700, b 27 Dec 1826 - d. 21 Feb 1900, was the Son of Mary (Polly) SANFORD WOODRUFF #1545, and Benjamin WOODRUFF. I am happy to say that Mary 'Polly' Sanford was an older sister of my great grandfather, Andrew SANFORD, of Steuben Co. NY. and later in Seneca Co. OH. Ggrandfather Andrew SANFORD owned a farm about two miles from where I was born on another farm there near Attica, Ohio. I have a great amount of SANFORD records, especially of the descendants of John SANFORD, and most of their children. Apparently your husband and I have 'common ancestors', who are John & Sarah (MILLER) SANFORD, of Long Pond, NJ. and Steuben Co. NY. He was born in 1774 at Newark, NJ. I would like very much to hear from you, and to see the 'direct line' of ancestry from your husband to our John SANFORD, of Steuben Co. NY. The reference #s are in the "Thomas Sanford Books", on pages 219 and 361, of my copies of those books. Hope to hear from you, and see that 'direct line' connection. Another cousin, John Sanford of CA. 6223 Prospect Ave. San Jose, CA. [email protected]
Ann; I'm still holding my breath - please tell us more... who WAS he married to; what WAS his middle name; and could you list all the children. Thanks. Many of us are descendants of Thomas Sanford. I am aware of his wife's name and own both volumes of Carlton Sanford's genealogy, which tells me that his name was not Thomas ANDREW Sanford. I got the information that Sarah Meadows and Dorthea Meadows were wives of Thomas from BArbara Jacobson who had found it on a piece of paper she found while viewing a SANFORD film. They were the daughters of Henry Meadows of Stowe, England. I've never seen this information anywhere else, so its another piece of the puzzle. Dorothea and Sarah were both born in England as far as I know, have not had any time for researching as of late. Good luck with your research. Cannot let this go by without protesting. I don't think there's anyone who seriously believes that there was a Thomas Andrew Sanford. There was a Thomas and there was Andrew, his brother. Both are well documented. As has been discussed on other lists, America's First Families is simply another place to send your money to get your ancestry - proven or otherwise - displayed. It's enough to make me want to junk my computer.
I wish to advise you that our immigrant ancestor, has been accepted in the "Roll of Honor" of the 'Sons & Daughters of America's First Families'. Their Url is: http://www.linkline.com/personal/xymox I hope to hear from anyone (except those who have already provided a copy of their 'direct line' record), who has a connection at any place in this line of descendants of Thomas SANFORD the immigrant. We have information to share, that may be helpful to you. John Sanford ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~` "America's First Families" Ancestor Roll Of Honor THOMAS ANDREW SANFORD. CONNECTICUT (1607/08-1681) Thomas SANFORD, progenitor of his line in America was born in 1607/08 at Hatfield Broad Oak, Essex, England. Thomas settled in Dorchester, Massachusetts, where he was granted a four-acre tract of land 22 Nov. 1634, and sixteen acres, 4 Jan. 1635. These two plots were "on the west side of the way by Mr. Hawthorne's by the brooke on Roxbury boundes" and on 18 Feb. 1635, he was allotted two acres in the fresh marsh nearest the town. Thomas was married 1636-37 to Sarah, maiden name unknown,at Dorchester, MA. She died May 14, 1681 at Milford, CT. Her name is not mentioned in her husband's will, who died in the following October. He was added to the First Church of Milford Jan 9, 1642 and she Dec. 16, 1642. Thomas and Sarah were the parents of seven children. An interesting document in Dorchester, MA, records, entered April 17, 1635, reveals that Thomas THORNTON and Thomas SANFORD were to keep the cows for seven months for which they were to receive 5s.3d. a cow if there were six cows; if the herd were less they would receive less payment. The two men promised to collect the cows each morning an hour after sunrise, and to drive them across the bridge on their return trip at evening. This routine was followed each week day, and by one man on Sunday. The following year, 1636, it was further ordered by the court that all cows must be placed in the care of keepers in a common pasture from April 17th to November 15th, and Mathias SENSION was to assist Thomas SANFORD, in herding them. Thomas was made a freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, March 9, 1636/37, in Dorchester, MA. Thomas SANFORD removed to Milford, CT, and the birth in January 1641, of his daughter Mary is recorded in the annals of the First Church of Milford, which indicates that he was residing there then. He was admitted to the church January 9, 1642 Thomas acquired various tracts of land in Milford and served on town committees. On the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of founding the town the citizens of Milford erected a stone bridge over the stream, which had formerly been difficult to cross when entering the town. This bridge built in 1889, in memory of the founders, contains heavy stones on the battlements in which the names of the pioneers are cut. The memorial inscription to Thomas SANFORD follows: Thomas Sanford, Obit 1681, Sarah, His wife Died, in October, 1681, in Milford, CT. His will made September 23, 1681, and his estate was valued upon appraisal, October 21, 1681, at L450 18s. 3d. Submitted by John David Sanford, of San Jose, CA. Your Morgan Sanford that resembles in some respects my John Morgan Sanford, born 1811and died 1894 in Coosa County, Alabama. In the following respects he differs from your Morgan. John Morgan Sanford married Bethena Kimbrell and they had eleven children, Anne, Dawnie, Ginnie, Fannie, John Morgan, Jr., Jackson, Mary, Arlene, Emma, Susan, and Ida. I am attempting to trace the families of my g-grandparents & their children. If anyone finds any errors or has any additional information, I would be most happy to hear from you. Thank you for your time, help, & consideration. Henry JACKSON: b. abt. 1848; perhaps in West Hartepool, Durham, (but definately) England Oral family history says Henry JACKSON worked three years in the gold mines of Brazil to earn passage for his wife & children to the U.S. The Maverick County, Texas, Naturalization Index Records show his Declaratio of Intention was filed 13 Oct 1888. I figure the five year residency requirement put Henry in the U.S. about 1883. I further guess he worked in Brazil from abt. 1878 - 1882. Henry JACKSON's wife was Mary Emma (BLENKENSOP) JACKSON. She too was born in England, perhaps in Greatham, County, Durham. (I have a few clippings they kept from that area of the country.) >From the oral history I heard of Mary BLENKENSOP her children's voyage to the U.S., they had to stop in New Orleans for a bit because of a storm. They later landed in Texas. (Would anyone know where? Galevston? Corpus Christi?) The family finally settled in Eagle Pass/Wilder, Maverick County, Texas. I've heard stories that Henry JACKSON used to cross the International Bridge in Eagle Pass to get to work. Recently, I've come across a picture of Hannah & Otto GERLINE, & Harry & Anna (BONNET) JACKSON. The picture was taken in Texas. I'm not sure who these folks were to Henry, Mary, & the children. Children of Henry & Mary JACKSON: - (Mary) Hannah: born in England Her first name is unconfirmed. I've always heard her referred to as Hannah. m. Otto GERLINE They lived in Three Rivers, MI, & then Kalamazoo, MI children: George, Howard, maybe two daughters (May & Viola) - Alfred: born in England called Alf -- I don't know if he married - Annie (Jane?): born in Texas m. Judge John SANFORD An attorney who later (obviously) became a judge. He knew one John "Cactus Jack" GARNER, who was also an attorney & was to become FDRs first vice president. (Father says his mother, Dorothy, said she met Mr. GARNER while visiting the home of her sister & brother-in law.) possible children: John Richard, Henry Jackson, Elizabeth Ida, Susan Ellen - It is said John SANFORD's younger brother Roger lived with John & Annie after the SANFORD brothers' parents died. - Mamie: born in Texas m. William "The Scriv" SCRIVNER/ SCRIVENER. He had a ranch in Texas. I have letter, I believe written by one of Mamie's daugter-in-laws, which refers to Mother SCRIVNER. - Ernest: born in Texas I don't know if he married. - Dorothy: born in Eagle Pass or Wilder, Maverick County, Texas, 5 Dec 1885 m. Henry Edward QUINN 22 July 1909 in Three Rivers, MI, I think she was staying with Hannah & Otto at the time. Dorothy & Henry lived in NYS. Dorothy died 2 Apr 1958 & is buried at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, Otsego Co., NY children: Dorothy Mamie, Kathryn Jackson Henry Edward Rufus Jerome Peace, love, joy, Cher [email protected] 601 Stoneleigh Avenue Unit 612 Carmel, New York 10512-2404 U.S.A.
Leah, To find a naturalization record or a passenger list remember & try the following: 1. timeframe your people entered the U.S. a. people who were in U.S. by 1789 were grandfathered as U.S. citizens b. persons who arrived after 1789 or after a territory was annexed by U.S. had to complete a five year residency before naturalization could be completed: did they move around during that time, where did they settle c. most naturalizations prior to 1906 took place in local & state courts as they were closer & more convenient d. naturalizations after 1906: - still had five year residency requirement - went to closest city with federal court 2. National Archives Records Administration (NARA): - note while regional offices only have federal court naturalization records, in some cases they may direct you to the proper local court to contact for pre-1906 records a. Higginson lists the book for $185. By the time you add on $10 for hard cover and shipping it's about $200. NEHGS also sells a reprint edition. I have a copy, but I missed the original question. I'd be glad to do a lookup, but in general the farther away a Sanford moved from Connecticut the less likely he is to be mentioned in the book. Debbie, Sorry, but I don't have either book. I have a copy of the pages relating to my line from the Thomas Sanford book and have gone through them and cannot find a William with a brother Moses, but that doesn't mean they are not in the book. I found the Thomas Sanford book in microfilm at the Library of Congress in D.C. and also at the Sutro Genealogy Library near San Francisco. I've read on the SANFORD-L postings of people who do have the book but don't have their addressess. Also through the list I have \\

Naming Rinda Sandford as the daughter of William D. (or S.) Sanford and Sarah F. Could you tell me if this Williama Sanford born ca. 1816 in Tennessee. Is in either of the family lines in the books you have mention here. He had a brother that was Moses Sandford and a sister Barbara. Arinda Elizabeth Sanford married John L. I am looking for any information on my great-grandfather Morgan Sanford who lived and died in or around Elmore County Alabama. He died (just an educated guess) about 1900. His wife was Mattie Lou Vickers d. 1932. I would like to know their parents names so that I can continue my search.
