Hi, I think the Sanford website is great and I wonder about the format...can anyone suggest where to get a good website format? I think I'm ready to start one but I want one with lots of links capabilities and indexes...and one that doesn't throw an ad in everyone's faces every minute or so! Any suggestions? Sorry this isn't genealogy exactly--but its other people doing this kind of research that who will know what types of sites work best...By the way, another list I'm on has lots and lots of friendly posts that aren't exactly genealogical. Everyone's OK with it, but to be polite, if it's NOT about ancestry directly, we use NGI in the subject line. That way, anyone who doesn't want to be bothered can just DELETE. It works very smoothly on that list! Lately our NGI post have been about family traits--diabetes, or second toe longer than the "big" toe, or the family curse levied by the Archbishop of Glasgow.....WAY back ! It's related, but not strictly genealogical... Cyndi Babbling in Baltimore
Bitch and groan . . . Whine and cry . . . If that is all this list is good for I'll say good-bye! Adios!
Sandie: Good evening I'm usually just a lurker and if someone I can help, I help. Genealogy isn't just what life is about, we are all in need of getting off the subject once in a while and these people that feel that have to say mean things to people are not very carring and someday they are going to have to step back and ask themselves why no one helps them. Get an attitude adjustment folks and lets stick to what we are here for, helping each other with our family history, not to sit and bicker about who does what and why. I've done genealogy for over 30 years now and have never felt I had to hurt someone to get what I needed. I'm sorry to hear about your husband. I can not beleive that people have to be so tactless and so mean, why can't they just delete what they don't want and leave it be, instead always having to have the last word. my two cents Franki At 10:29 PM 11/11/98 -0600, you wrote: >I was just reading your untactful message...wish to inform you that >there are many who can chew gum, read a book and yes Even use a >computer at the same time....as for remembering the Veterans ...I >remember one everyday ...MY HUSBAND died in Vietnam April1968.....died >in a firey helicopter crash...Why ? Howdy - My 2 cents worth: The question of website versus mailing list is totally meaningless. (No disrespect intended.) You are missing the major point. For one thing, there are lots of people who have mailing list access who do not have web access. There are lots of economic reasons for this and some security issues as well. Also, consider the difference in the experience people have with these tools. Some people know how to surf the web. Others know how to do their email - well, almost, considering the number of unsubscribe messages, recipes, rememberances of veterans, etc. we have to read to see the possible messages about our ancestors. Others join the chat rooms (shudder). Leave the mailing list as it is. By all means, encourage the use of the web site. One has little to do with the other, IMHO. (It might help if you gave the URL. <GRIN> By the way, I would be happy to contribute a GEDCOM. Thanks. As one who is attempting to run rather rudementary pilot websites for a number of interest groups I belong to, I have every admiration for the tenacity and commitment you have shown in running the List. Might I suggest that it could be easier for you and for researchers if the list was dropped, and all communications done via the website. By this, I mean each member would post their interests profile and a zip file of Gedcom data if they have one, rather like they do on the Compuserve Forum. A Directory of members area/connection interests with email addresses and web addresses would then enable other members or anyone to target contacts. It would be made clear (as I think it is on your website already) what the purpose of the site is. By this I mean it is not really for general historical or topographical chit chat, but for Genealogy. The India Roots list I receive in Digest form has been cluttered with recipes, poems, enquiries of a historical & topographic nature, ethnic and political issues, etc Most folk just don't have time to wade through all that...and the file is often too big even in Digest mode to save (eg 50K+), without forwarding to enable deletion of the gobbledegook header. I suggest that using a website is much more efficient. The Genserv model may be the ideal, if resources can be found to adopt this approach. Thereby, readers 'pull' the info they want rather than having any irrelevant info 'pushed' at them. Finaly, may I suggest we have a parallel with the neighborhood Residents Association. For some its a social club, whereas for others it's a body which exists to help one solve local problems. I suggest family history research fall in the latter category. In the GENUKI network here in Britain, individuals who offer specific look-up services are posted on a County specific website. I am looking for someone to take over the Sanford mailing list. I just don't have the time to properly care for it. If someone just wants to take care of the list as a moderator that would be fine or the list could be change to reflect them as listowner. I really don't care just as long as this list can get up and moving again. As I said before there are too many new subscribers that we are losing because of inactivity. Please consider this for me. As for the website. I spend hours working on it. There are a lot of corrections and a lot of sources still to be added. It will be at least another month before I feel I can update it. But for the new subs the url is http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ranch/4453 Please feel free to send corrections and suggestions. Good Hunting Sandie [email protected] [email protected] (Temporary)

Rooters, I recently heard that after the Civil War some families in the South migrated to Brazil and started a new Southern Society. Can someone point me in a direction to find out which families migrated and where in Brazil? I cannot find some of my ancestors so maybe they went to Brazil. Howard
You might want to check into information about the city, Americana, in Brazil. According to the book, "The Brazilians", by Joseph A. Page, page 101, he tells about the encouragement of German immigration.. He wrote, "In addition, after the American Civil War, the emperor offered inducements that attracted as many as twenty thousand white southerners from the United States. Some settled in the Amazon region, but the majority made their way to the state of Sao Paulo, where they founded the town of Americana." I'm not an expert about this -- I just have a son who is a missionary about 50 miles from Americana! Apparently >your husband and I have 'common ancestors', who are John & Sarah >(MILLER) SANFORD, of Long Pond, NJ. and Steuben Co. NY. He was born in >1774 at Newark, NJ. I would like very much to hear from you, and to see >the 'direct line' of ancestry from your husband to our John SANFORD, of >Steuben Co. I'm just beginning research on my SANFORD line. All I have are a few names, a location, & a time period. Would anyone be willing to see if there are any entries in whatever Sanford genealogies are available, & thus provide me with a definate starting off point? John SANFORD m. Annie Jane JACKSON John was an attorney in Eagle Pass, Maverick County, Texas, during the early 1900s. I've heard he later became a judge, but I don't know what type or when. I don't know the date John & Annie were wed. An aunt of mine has said that John had a younger brother, Roger, who lived with John & Annie after the brothers' parents had died. Any truth to this? If possilbe, would whoever kindly assists me with this, mail me photocopies of the entries (I'm hoping there is one of John, Annie, & their family; & one for John's parents.) Thank you for your time, help, & consideration. Peace, love, joy, Cher [email protected] 601 Stoneleigh Avenue Unit 612 Carmel, New York 10512-2404 U.S.A.
