Company I was enlisted in Albemarle CO and entered the field in June, 1861. Assigned to PICKETTs Division, the regiment was actively engaged in the brilliant series of movements of the army of Northern VA, and its battles included Bull Run, 1st Manassas, Williamsburg, 7 Pines, Fraziers Farm, second Manassas, South Mountain, Sharpsburg, Gettysburg, Bermuda Hundreds, the seven days fighting around Richmond, the battles around Petersburg, and the fighting on the retreat to Appomattox, where it was surrendered. At Gettysburg only three members of I CO in the action fell back unwounded from the charge of Picketts Division on the Heights, while many of its members gave their lives in that heroic endeavor to turn the tide of battle.
