    1. [SANDIDGE-L] SANDIGE Family
    2. Hello, "cousins," Last weekend I met a Mr. Sandige who gave me the following information from genealogy information that his great aunt wrote down. If anyone can relate to this information or can tie it in with the Sandidge family, please let me know so I can tell Mr. Sandige. Thanks, Rita "About 1650 two brothers living in and natives of Scotland decided to go to the new country of the United States of America to seek their fortune. One of the brothers stopped in VA near central part and settled there. The other one ventured still further on as young fellas like to do, and settled in central West Virginia. Each remained in his chosen place and eventually married and raised a family. >From the WVA brother, Thomas, the present Sandige family came, as far as can be assertained. The other one stayed in VA. Thomas married Frances Jones, who had come with her father and mother from England. There was a brother, too, of hers, Levi Jones, who married to Leatha Peters, also a cousin Morris Harvey, the founder of Morris Harvey College, of Charleston, WVA. Union of Thomas and Francis was four sons, Edward Monroe, Joseph, Rufus, a young son Henry who was killed in the Civil War at age sixteen. There was one sister Ellen, a frail delicate girl of sixteen that died. Edward Monroe married Sarah Hashbarger whose parents were German. Her mother's maiden name was Bare, also German. To this union was born daughter, Rose, six brothers, Earl, Lud, Bud, William, Gug and Stuart in this order. Sarah Sandige died in 1914, Edward Monroe about 10 years later. Their final resting place is Princeton, WVA in Old Larys Cemetery. Four brothers, Will, Bud, Lud and Gug, sons of Edward and Sarah also lie buried there. Earl is in the WVA central part. Frances Sandige was a small woman with an unusual personality, highly intelligent and self educated. Well versed in Bible and a devoted Christian. Her son Edward Monroe was also a self educated man. A teacher in schools of WVA and Missouri. He spoke German and had a good knowledge of Greek and Latin. Joseph Abner Sandige was born VA 1852. He died Hico in June 1925 aged 73 years. His father Thomas was in General Lee's army. He had brother Henry who died age 16 at battle of Lewisburg. The family came to Fayette Co. in 1860 and settled in Beckwith. He married Stella Nichols on March 12, 1872. They moved to Beets P.O. on James River and Kanawha turnpike in 1883. Their children were Laura, Fred (lived in KY), Harry(headed a gas drilling company), Leonard (died single), Frank ( killed in mine accident), Wilbert (killed in railroad accident) and Seth Sidney who married Eva Neal."
