As requested, here is my branch of the Sandidge Family starting with Napoleon. Please let me know if anyone finds any errors in this tree. I am rather puzzled about Napoleon's first wife Cyrena Shields....if anyone could shed some light on this situation I would appreciate it. Comments on this tree are welcomed. Hope this is helpful to everyone. FYI - Hubby James Anthony Meholick (adopted by the Reuther's) is the grandson of James Price Perkins, who is the son of John William Perkins and Columbia Sandidge Perkins. Hi, Linda, Please send us your family line to the SANDIDGE mail list as other cousins may be in that branch. I made a mistake on my aunt's death date. Dorothy V. Sandidge died this past Wednesday, May 6, 1998. We will go to her funeral on Monday. Rita
Rita, Columbia Sandidge is my husband's great grandmother. I would be happy to send you the descendant outline for Columbia (and husband John William Perkins). Were you aware that he was her second husband? You apparently descend from Columbia and John H. Perkins. Nice to meet you cousin Rita. Hello, Cousins, I hope you are enjoying the beautiful spring. I found us a new "cousin" as you can see from the following. Rita :-)
Judy, thanks for the list. If you or others are ever in Va doing the cemetary thing, I recommend a day at Hollywood Cemetary in Richmond. Its a beautiful place, and abounds in history and cemetary art. I'm aware of only one Sandidge buried there: a son of Dudley Sandidge and Belinda Smith who is supposedly buried in the Confederate Section. Even so, a day at Hollywood is well worth the two hour drive from Amherst or Albemarle. ---------- From: judith murphy To: SANDIDGE-L Subject: Tombstone Carvings - their meanings Date: Saturday, March 28, 1998 11:51AM This was on the Newgen List -- doesn't appear to be copyrighted and thought it would be of interest to my "family" since spring is here and cemetery wandering will come to be soon (at least up north -- you southerners can gloat all you want for your year-round good weather to go there)./Judy M. >-----Original Message----- >From: DBaker3381 >Sent: Friday, March 27, 1998 8:18 PM >To: bfox@nightowl.net; NEWGEN-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [NEWGEN-L] Re: Meanings on Old Tombstone Carvings > >Old Tombstone Carvings: > >The term "Relict" on a tombstone means that the woman was a widow at >time of death, consort means that her husband survived her. > >"Cenotaph" engraved on a tombstone indicates an empty grave, with the stone erected in honor or memory of a person buried elsewhere - often erected in honor of a person lost at sea. > >Meanings of Carvings: > >Arches--- Victory in Death >Arrows--- Mortality >Bouquets/Flowers--- Condolences, grief, sorrow >Buds/Rosebud--- Morning of Life or Renewal of Life >Roses--- Brevity of earthly existence >Portals--- Passageway to eternal journey >Bugles--- Resurrection and the Military >Crossed Swords--- High-ranking military person >Flying Birds--- Flight of the Soul >Fruits--- Eternal plenty >Garlands --- Victory in death >Imps--- Mortality >Shells--- Pilgrimage of Life >Thistles--- Remembrance >Tombs--- Mortality >Trees--- Life >Trumpeters--- Heralds of the Resurrection >Willows--- Earthly Sorrow >Morning Glory--- Beginning of Life >Butterfly--- Short-lived; Early Death >Full-Blown Rose--- Prime of Life >Palm Branch--- Signifies Victory and Rejoicing >Ivy--- Friendship and Immortality >Laurel--- Fame or Victory >Oak Leaves & Acorn--- Maturity, Ripe Old Age >Weeping Willow--- Emblem of Sorrow >Corn--- Ripe Old Age >Sheaf of Wheat--- Ripe for Harvest, Divine Harvest, Time >Poppy--- Sleep >Lamb--- Innocence >Dove--- Innocence, Gentleness, Affection, Purity >Cherub--- Angelic >Cross--- Emblem of Faith >Anchor/Ships--- Hope or Seafaring profession >Broken Ring--- Family Circle Severed >Broken Column--- Loss of Head of Family >Torch Inverted--- Life Extinct >Urn with Blaze --- Undying Friendship >Harp--- Praise to the Maker >Handshakes--- Farewell >Hearts--- Soul in Bliss or Love of Christ >Horns--- The Resurrection >Hourglass--- Swiftness of Time >Open Book/Bible--- Deceased Teacher, Minister, etc. >Lily or Lily of Valley--- Emblem of Innocence and Purity >Tree Stump w/Ivy--- Head of Family; Immortality >Urn with /Wreath or Crepe-- Mourning >Stars & Stripes Around Eagle--- Eternal Vigilance, Liberty >Hourglass w/Wings of Time--- Time Flying; Short Life >Candle being Snuffed--- Time, mortality >Coffin, Father Time, Picks/Shovels, Darts--- Mortality >Hand of God Chopping-- Sudden Death >Winged Effigies--- Flight of the Soul >
here is another one found on same list -- if you are a "newbie" to either genealogy or computers and don't flame people for their mistakes this list or the gen-newbie ones are for you. (more experienced can also subscribe -- they are the ones guiding the newer ones). A list is what you are on for this Sandidge exchange -- and you can choose -d for digest form if you don't like the individual messages. I compiled a SMALL amount of what I had back in 1990 and put together 2 books that are viewable online (very good learning experience as I royally SC****D up the first one forgetting to add places, etc. and had to go back and try to correct this in 2nd one as well as adding additional info in 2nd that was not in the first one. There is also an index I have been doing to the book Descendants of Nathan and Mary Sandage (Sandidge/Sandridge, etc). this index is also viewable from those pages. They are located: http://www.usroots.com/~jmurphy/gibson/gibson.htm or http://members.aol.com/murphyjudi/perry/perry.htm http://members.aol.com/murphyjudi/spencer/spencer.htm (now the actual books and database for index is on usroots which is going to go through some repairs this weekend until Monday morning so they may or may not be accessible -- sysop says they will be going up and down all weekend). I also have only a small portion of my personal genealogy on a webpage they are beta testing the program -- it is located at: http://www.my-ged.com/murphy/ (go to surnames for Sandage) Although I am a Sandage, we have found the name spelled Sandidge, Sandridge and other variations and have been told that our Nathan came originally from VA before his living in Union co, SC (the family then migrated to TN to IN and some on to IA, MO, and ARK). Hello, Cousins, How is your research going? Our mail list has been very quiet lately. We have added another "baby" to our family which has been keeping me busy. It is a 4 month old black Lab puppy who is teething! We have new people who have joined our list and I hope they will introduce themselves and their branch of the SANDIDGE family. Also if anyone has a genealogy webpage that they would like us to see, please send the address to the SANDIDGE mail list. Gwen said that she was having problems receiving the mail list. So I hope you get this, Gwen. My SANDIDGE line: 1. Received this from a friend -- unsure whether this is REAL or a form of jokes that go around once in awhile -- but considering that I had heard through the grape-vine for the past 5 years from many of my European friends (that this was coming) I am going to treat it as serious, but you can judge for yourself and only time will tell -- feel this is something we genealogists may need to know for coming future messages, books, research (if real) and if this isn't real it is still great as a joke (almost like that one about the spell-checker).
