    1. Stephen Sandridge
    2. Hello Imogean, Although my cousin, Julie Sandidge, of Roanoak, Virginia, has been told that there is a family Bible in the Albemarle Historical Society in Charlottesville, Virginia, which states that Stephen Sandridge was the father of Benjamin Thurmond Sandridge, I know of no one to date who has found actual documentation proving that my two 3G grandfathers, Nathan and his brother Benjamin Thurmond Sandridge, were the sons of Stephen. Nor has any one found any documentation proving the maiden name of Stephen's wife, Sarah (Sally or Sallie). And, believe me, there have been plenty of family genealogy researchers throughout the United States looking for this information. However, I do have documentation proving that Nathan and Benjamin Thurmond were brothers. But, I will tell you what I know of Stephen and the known facts which lead me to conclude that he was probably the father of Nathan and Benjamin Thurmond Sandridge. To begin with, apparently Stephen was not schooled. Land deed records I have found concerning him in Franklin County, Tennessee, were signed with an "X". And, I can find no record of him being involved in politics, affiliated with any church, appearing in any court proceeding, or appointed to serve in any public service or capacity. No personal or professional letters concerning him have been found. Additionally, he died very poor and there was no will. He evidently was just an illiterate poor dirt farmer who came from a good family - but whose only success seemed to have been in fathering a large number of children. In contrast, his brother, John Sandidge, who moved from Virginia to Kentucky, was literate and a very successful farmer and businessman. Maybe that is why their mother, Elizabeth (Betty) Graves Sandridge, chose to live with him after their father died. You will notice that John used the spelling "Sandidge" while Stephen continued to be listed as "Sandridge" which was the surname spelling his father had used later in life. Since they were not the most literate of individuals, they usually used the spelling of those doing the recording for them - store clerks, court clerks, census takers, etc. And these people spelled the name phonetically according to how they heard it pronounced.. So far, I have come up with 67 different ways the surname can be spelled - depending on how slurred it is pronounced and how good the hearing of the recorder. In my line, the "r" was dropped by them (or for them) about 1850 to 1870. Some East Texas descendents of Nathan's son, Nimrod, continue to use "Sandridge" presently. After Nimrod death after 1870, his third wife and their two children continued to reside in Marshall County, Alabama, until approximately 1890 -1895 when they and their families migrated west - eventually settling in Smith County, Texas, prior to 1910. But I am probably getting into an area with which you are already familiar. So, back to Stephen's story as I have pieced it together by a few facts and some conclusions. Stephen Sandridge was born about 1752, in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, the son of William and Elizabeth (Betty) Graves Sandridge. Approximately 1810 -1815, he, Sally, and their youngest son, Benjamin Thurmond, accompanied two of his other sons, Nathan and George, on a move from Albemarle County, Virginia, to Franklin County, Tennessee. He last appears on the 1810 Albemarle County Federal Census and died after 21 September 1821, probably in Franklin County, Tennessee. According to that 1810 Census, Stephen's household consisted of: one white male 10-16 years old (probably Benjamin Thurmond who was born about 1795.) three white males 16-25 years old. One white male over 45 years old (Stephen) One white female over 45 years old (Sarah) The 1810 Federal Census for Franklin County, Tennessee, does not list any Sandage, Sandridge, Sandidge, Sandige, Sanrage, Sunrage, or any other variant spelling of the surname. The 1820 Federal Census for Franklin County lists the following: Stephen Sandridge One white male 16-25 years old (possibly Nimrod) One white male over 45 - (Stephen - who was about 68 years old) One white female over 45 - (Sarah) Benjamin Sandridge One white male under 10 years old (my 3 G grandfather Thomas Hastings Sandridge) One white male 16 -24 (Benjamin) One white female 16-24 (Mary Elizabeth Martin Sandridge) Nathan Sandridge Four white males under 10 One white male 10-16 One white male 26-45 (Nathan) Two white females under 10 One white female 10-16 One white female 26-45 George Sandridge One white male over 45 (George) One whites female 16-26 By 1830, only Nathan, Nimrod, and Benjamin appeared on the Franklin County Federal Census. Franklin County Land Deed records list the following for Stephen: 22 Feb 1819 - Stephen bought a 40 acre homestead for $60. 17 June 1820 - Stephen sold the 40 acres for $75. 3 June 1821 - Stephen bought the 40 acres back for $75. 21 September 1821 - Stephen sold the 40 acres for $76. Witnessed by Nathan Sandridge. (Note: Nathan had purchased land in Franklin County as early as 24 June 1816.) It is possible that Stephen was using the small farm as collateral when he ran low on finances. This would explain the frequent buying and selling of the same piece of property. It is also possible that the 16-26 year old living in Stephen's household on the 1820 Census was Nimrod Sandridge who was not accounted for in the household of his father, Nathan. By this time, Stephen was nearing 70 years old and could have used the help of a strong grandson on the little farm. Nimrod Sandridge, born about 1804/1805, in Virginia, married his second wife, Elizabeth Smith, on 29 August 1858, in Franklin County, Tennessee. They had no children. By 21 July 1860, he, Elizabeth, and his daughter from his first marriage, Mary C. Sandridge, were residing in Marshall County, Alabama. By 9 August 1870, Nimrod had married his third wife, Eliza Jane Terrell, born 1836/1837, in Alabama. They had two children: (1) Willy (Willie) Ann E. Sandridge, born 1864/1865, in Alabama. On 26 October 1890, in Marshall County, Alabama, she married Obediah B. Cooper. (2) John P. Sandridge, born 4 January 1869, in Alabama. On 23 September 1888, in Marshall County, Alabama, he married Margaret Ann Ardis. By 1910, both children with their mother and their families had migrated west to Bullard, Smith County, Texas. Another son of Nimrod, William Pennington Sandridge, moved his family to Missouri. From which of Nimrod's children is your husband descended? Concerning Nathan's marriage: Although I have no information to confirm it, I suspect that Catherine (Caty) Modena Sandridge may not have been the mother of Nathan's children. This thought is supported by the fact that when she died in September 1850, she left a will, dated 10 September 1850, specifying that all her property and assets be divided among the children of her two deceased brothers, Thomas and Henry Modena. Nothing was left to Nathan's children, including Nimrod who still resided in the vicinity. However, it does appear that she cared for Nathan because the will specified the following: ". . . to have a neat tombstone placed over my grave and have the graveyard where my husband is and where I desire to be buried paled in." I collect any formation concerning any line of the Sandridge/Sandidge/Sandage family and would appreciate whatever information you may have as well as that you offered on the Modena family. Martin ,

Perdue defended a series of non-credited college lectures he organized which was cancelled hours prior to its last scheduled meeting last week. "North Carolina's Role in the War for Southern Independence" was abruptly shut down by Randolph Community College officials following complaints from NAACP officials and inquiries from the U.S. Civil Rights Commission. Sons of Confederate Veterans members joined Perdue Wednesday in denouncing the cancellation and pointed to one newspaper reporter as the source of the misunderstanding. In the Greensboro News and Record Ethan Feinsilver wrote "the course teaches that the ‘vast majority’ of black people were satisfied with their lives as slaves," according to Perdue. Perdue, however, insisted on Wednesday "no such statement was ever made in the class." The series of stories was picked up by the Associated Press and reprinted throughout North Carolina and as far away as Arizona. "Mr. Feinsilver asked for and was provided a course schedule," Perdue said, "and expressed a particular interest in the session entitled 'The Role of Blacks and Native Americans.' In spite of his interest in this session and the fact that most of his defamatory accusations deal with this topic, he did not attend this session and does not have any first hand knowledge of what was said." The Archdale news conference at Randolph Community College was attended by representatives of more than fifteen North Carolina newspapers and radio and television outlets who listened as North Carolina S.C.V. Commander Larry Beeson took the opportunity to defend the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Perdue is Commander of a regional S.C.V. Camp in High Point. "There are those in our society," Beeson said, "who have taken upon themselves the job of finding everything that in any form or fashion is in some way considered offensive to some portion of the public, and then attempting to use it as a means of dividing the community. "We strongly denounce the unethical practice of reporting Mr. Feinsilver has displayed," Beeson said. "Everyone should be proud of their heritage and allow others the same right to be proud of theirs. Those who take exception with our position to meet in open forum and discuss these issues so that the public can be properly informed of the entire content of this class..." "Articles written by Ethan Feinsilver...made false and misleading statements," Perdue told reporters. "In preparing this statement, I have reviewed video tapes made of the classes to be sure of the accuracy of my statements. Mr. Feinsilver reported the course 'teaches that most black people were happy under slavery.' No such statement was ever made in any session of the course." In reports Feinsilver quoted UNC-Chapel Hill historian Harry Watson and his preported surprise 'that anybody is defending slavery in this day and age.' "No defense of slavery was ever made in any session of the class, Perdue told reporters. "Mr. Watson has never attended any of our sessions and was probably just reacting to misinformation provided to him by Mr. Feinsilver." Feinsilver, Perdue continued, wrote the Randolph County NAACP labeled the course 'offensive.' "Mr. Richie Everette, the chapter president," Perdue said, "attended one hour of one class and spoke with me at the break. He made no reference to finding the course offensive. He inquired with some interest about the Sons of Confederate Veterans and how he might join. I gave him information on the SCV and offered to help him find out if he had any Confederate ancestors. "I think his statements are a reaction to race baiting misinformation given to him by Mr. Feinsilver," Perdue said. Regarding the interest shown in the course by the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, Perdue said Feinsilver's reports quote Wyatt Kirk, commission chairman in North Carolina, as asking, "How is the college letting this happen?" "How is it letting what happen?" Perdue asked. "No one’s civil rights have been violated by this course except those of the students. Mr. Kirk has not attended a single session and Feinsilver attended one complete session and parts of two others." One student, Perdue said, "wrote a two page letter of complaint to his supervisor" regarding Feinsilver, "and one week prior to the first article... "As a result of Mr. Feinsilver’s inaccurate articles being picked up by the Associated Press," Perdue continued, "Randolph Community College and the Sons of Confederate Veterans have been subjected to adverse publicity, harassment by the press from all over the U. S. and abroad and vilification by people who have no idea what was taught in the course. "In summary," Perdue said, "it appears the media was duped by an over zealous young reporter who is apparently relishing the publicity as he takes care in each subsequent article to point out the major networks covering his story. This was just an adult continuing education history course which included guest instructors including an associate history professor from an area university, a retired professor from an area four year college and an author and writer from Mr. Feinsilver’s own paper, none of whom would have participated in a course such as Mr. Feinsilver has described. All instructors donated their fees to fund an essay contest for eighth grade students in area schools." Beeson added in defense of the 102-year-old S.C.V. "Facts should never be distorted to create controversy. "We are a volunteer organization today just as we were when founded in 1896.Virginia. Our constitution renders us a patriotic, historical, civic, education, benevolent, non-political, non-racial, non-sectarian organization. We are a non-profit tax exempt entity recognized by the U.S. Government. "Today the Sons of Confederate Veterans is preserving the history and legacy of the Confederate soldiers so future generations can understand the motives that animated the Southern Cause. We are dedicated to insuring that a true history of the 1861-1865 period is preserved." --------------DB5178109A4719A7342F17D5--

    1. F.M. and Pearl Ruth McPeak Sandidge
    2. Pat, If you are looking for relatives, you have found one. F.M. Sandidge's listed father, John R. Sandidge, was a brother of my great grandfather, James Milton Sandidge. While I don't have F.M. listed as one of John's children, it is possible that he was born after the last U.S. Census record I have found listing the family. It is as follows: ED 68, page 1,1900 U.S. Federal Census for Beat # 3, Livingston, Madison County, Mississippi, dated 2 June 1900. Sandridge, John R., age 37, born June 1862, in Mississippi of father and mother born in Tennessee. He was a farmer who had been married 15 years and had the following family: Sandridge, Emma (wife), age 34, born Dec 1865, in Mississippi of father born in Tenn and mother born in Mississippi. She had 4 children - all of whom were living. Sandridge, Maggie L. (dau), age 14, born Sept 1885, in Mississippi of parents born in Mississippi. She attended school. Sandridge, Lottie K. (dau), age 12, born Feb 1888, in Mississippi of parents born in Mississippi. She attended school. Sandridge, Hue L. (son), age 10, born June 1889, in Mississippi of parents born in Mississippi. He attended school. Sandridge, Johny R. (son), age 9, born May 1891, in Mississippi of parents born in Mississippi. He attended school. You will note that all children of this marriage as of this time have been accounted for. Evidently F.M. was born sometime after 2 June 1900. Do you have the date and/or place? I suspect that sometime after 1900 and before 1910, the family moved from Mississippi to Tennessee since they do not appear on any 1910 Mississippi U.S. Census record. You will also note the spelling of the last name. This is the spelling used by John R.'s grandfather, Stephen. It was also used by his father, Pendleton, until approximately 1870 when he dropped the "r" and it became Sandidge. Some of Pendleton's other children, including my great grandfather, had dropped the "r" much earlier. In John R.'s case, he continued to use the spellijng "Sandridge" at least through 2 June 1900. If you wish, I have other information which is available to you by contacting me through my e-mail address or my mailing address which is listed below. 3. Jan and other persons who may not get internet but only has email -- my apologies if I mention to go somewhere on the internet -- I forget that over half of most list(s) persons don't have internet access, but only email. Jan, if you don't have internet access then contact me and I will give you that social security death numbers you may want for Pearl and her son; same with anything else I may mention in a message and refer to a specific address on internet. Everyone else -- my apologies again -- if any of you don't have internet access and don't have access to an LDS library just let me know and I will look up social security death stuff for you. I try not to advertise that I will do it, but you on this list are not great in number and I will help you if I can. Unfortunately I cannot afford the newer disks and mine were issued in 1995 and I think has some 1995 deaths on it but most are 1994 and before. While talking about the social security death index cds -- for the newbies on this list let me stress that the first state is NOT place of birth, but only where they were living at the time of issuance, and in some instances the nearest office. For example, #1 my brother was born VA, but living in San Antonio, TX when he got his card so it shows TX as the first state after his date of birth; example #2 my father's relatives were living in Wheeling, WVA but theirs all show OH as OH was the nearest social security office at the time; Another thing is that if a person did not receive social security (farmers, civil service workers, etc) they will NOT be listed UNLESS they were eligible and someone collected that last $225 check. Also the state showing after date of death is ALSO not 100% accurate for where they were living and/or died. example #3 one of my relatives lived in WVA, died in WashDC but it shows last check in OH -- this is because they had never received any checks from social security prior to their death, they died in WashDC while at a funeral of a friend, and the last check of the $255 went to their descendant who lived in OH. Although all of the above is NOT Sandidge or sic related -- it is very important for all the newbies to understand this and why sometimes their ancestors did not show up on this list although they DID pay into social security. 3. (sorry Karen -- forgot to send to list first time) Karen, Do you have source of where you found that William Sandidge JR, parent of Stephen, was b 1733 Spotsylvania Co, VA? I show his being born 1720 there and oldest child -- sorry I can't state my source as all my source records went with the fire and this date was on an old sheet I had xerox'd for my sister. I also show that same William's parents as being William Sandidge SR, b ca Jul 10, 1698 New Kent Co, VA, d Mar 11, 1746 Spotsylvania Co, VA, don't have date of marriage to Ann Pulliam, b ca Nov 22 1702, no date of death or place of her birth yet. I also showed Elizabeth Graves as being born Jan 26th 1826 -- but this may have been typo on my part. I don't show Stephen as being a son, but so far only had found the children as being: Dillard (nothing else on him, no dates, nothingi) Wiley (might be Virley) (nothing else do I have on him but a book I saw mentioned that he had numerous descendants still alive) _____ (unknown male who served Rev War there too, said to have gone West)(no other info on him either) (could this have been Stephen you mentioned? is Miss or TN "West"??? John b Nov 25, 1760 and d Jul 27, 1832 in KY -- his wife was Mary Wood and I do have a few things on them and their children These above are not my lines, but I have been trying to track different persons with a sic name of Sandage/ Sandridge, Sandidge, etc. while trying to prove my Nathan's parents (not the Nathan you mentioned or of this line -- my Nathan was born 1754 in either VA or SC and is found 1790 in Union Co, SC) I did had a "wild feed" showing a William and Betty (no last name for her and no date of birth for him) showing 9 children, one of them being a Stephen but had no dates of birth on any of the children, and only a handful of married names -- one was an Ann who married a CARR, one a Mary who married a LANE, Elizabeth married a ROW, William married Susannan (no last name) -- does this sound like the same William and Betty Graves family? if so I will merge them. Any dates of birth, death for their children would also be appreciated. I know I have wondered who this group is and wanted to match them in somewhere. Thanks for info you sent to Jan -- I will search around and see if I have anymore "wild feeds" that match some of these names and dates, etc. Judy M. >Dear Pat, >Below are what is in my data base for the Sandidge family that you asked >about. >Most of this information came from Jim Sandidge and Martin Sandidge, both >of whom were members of this group. 3. Only thing I had so far was the social security death stuff showing that Falvey Sandidge Jr was born Apr 20, 1924 and died Jan 1970 Norfolk, VA. This same Social Sec Death Index showed several Pearls: * PEARL SANDIDGE 01/11/1885 - 12/00/1966 Of Lynchburg, Virginia * PEARL SANDIDGE 06/28/1897 - 04/00/1977 Of Water Valley, Miss; SSN obtained in Tenn * PEARL SANDIDGE 09/10/1899 - 11/00/1972 Of Norfolk, Virginia going by her description I would assume that the one in Norfolk is her grandmother, but considering the comment about the Bible, then possibly the 2nd one could be -- since she didn't mention any dates for Pearl I don't know which of these was Falvey Sr's wife. With the social security info and numbers she can request (using form ss-5) the info under freedom of information act and privacy act and ask for the parents' names, birthdates and places, etc. Costs around $8 with the number and $15 without the number for each one you request info on -- but it can be a treasure-trove sometimes. You can get the social security numbers for Falvey and Pearl by going to http://www.ancestry.com and using their free database search of social security numbers. As for her Smith's -- lots of luck as I have Smiths in my family from NY and trying to trace that name is sometimes like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Best advice for her on that is just step backwards by first getting info from her parents' things (birthdates and places, marriage place, etc.) then do the grandparents -- since her father was born in 1924 he wouldn't show up on the census that is out, but the grandparents should show on the 1920 census with their parents (if they had not already married) -- so she may wish to try starting there in the counties she knows they lived (in that case Norfolk, VA area and also see if she can't find marriage for them too -- sometimes marriage has the parents' names as well as dates of birth and place of birth. Then go to 1910 and 1900 census', etc. If she has any other old papers besides the Bible, see if she can't find some names, dates, places in them -- old letters are sometimes wonderful as well as old pictures with notes on their backs. Old phone bills with numbers they called a lot are helpful; same with old address books and the address' from old letters they have. Sometimes friends who are still alive can help tell you about your own parents and grandparents and the older folks just LOVE to get mail or visits. Take along a tape recorder if you do visit, though -- they will ramble and change subjects and tell such wonderful tales you won't want to miss anything!!! If Pat knows any of her aunts and uncles or gr-aunts and uncles and where they lived you can sometimes look in the phone books and see if any of their children are still living -- letters or phone calls can sometimes be helpful there too. First off explain WHO you are and who your parents and grandparents are -- then explain that you are starting to find out about your roots and ask if they know of anyone in the family who has already done any work on the family. I had my cataract surgery Oct 13 and I'm doing fine. Roberta I'm new to genealogy on-line - have not yet gotten everything recorded on various sites, so I'll attempt here to write what I know on Wood: (Some of this is from my mother and I do not have all her sources written in my notebook yet. 1. Albemarle Co, VA web site
    2. Hello, cousins, I found a webpage for the historical society of Albemarle Co, VA that you might be interest in as our ancestors at one time lived there. Also of interest was the Annual Spirit Walk on October 23rd & 24th. This walk takes you to one of the oldest cemeteries where Civil War soldiers are buried. It is called Maplewood Cemetery. I thought that if any of you were near by, maybe you could do alittle research on the tombstones for us. Also I sent an email to the historical society to see if they have any book or documentation on the public, private, and homestead cemeteries. The main Albemarle Co. Historical Society webpage URL is http://monticello.avenue.gen.va.us/Community/Agencies/ACHS/ The page about the events and exhibits is http://monticello.avenue.gen.va.us/Community/Agencies/ACHS/prog.html Rita
