Hi Rita, concerning the book: "History of Albemarle Co., VA 1901 by Edgar Woods, C.J.Carrier Co., Harrisonburg, Va. .....I would be interested. Is the book now out of print? Hello, Cousins, I saw on VA-Roots about a book, "History of Albemarle CO, VA," orig. published in 1901, Edgar WOODS, C. J. Carrier CO, Harrisonburg, VA, 1978 that has information on surnames in Albemarle Co. The lady who checked the book out from the library sent me the following: Page 347: In 1774 David Wood came from Louisa, and purch land from David Watts, on the w side of the SW Mountain. Gwin, All I have on the Gibbs is that Thomas Gibbs of St. Phillips, Barbados and born about 1631 married Joan Higginbotham who was the daughter of John Higginbotham and Alice...They had at least 4 children Thomas Gibbs born about 1660, John Gibbs born 1660, Higginbotham Gibbs born abt 1664 and Jane who was born 1666. On the Mason family...I don't think you would be interested. All I have is a Mason family living in Conecuh County Ala during the 1850s and they married into the Spence, Smith and Kelley family of said county. Good luck on your research.JCM

The books are wonderful. The information included in the book is: a history of where and what battles/skirmishes the group encountered; and a list of every solider that served within that regiment. There are two Sandridges listed in the 19th Virginia Infantry. They are: 19th Virginia Infantry, p. 93: SANDRIDGE, JAMES J.: Cpl.; Co. E 5/20/61, Culpeper CH. Age 24, farmer. PVT. to 3Cpl. by 6/62. Pres. til wounded. Gaines Mill 6/27/62. Returned (date unknowned); MIA 7/3/63 Gettysburg but on last roll 8/64. SANDRIDGE, W.: Enl. 1/15/62 in Co. I,. Post war record only. Many of the men in Company E were from the Northern part of Albemarle County and Greene. Company I was mostly Amherst and Nelson. I highly recommend this series if you have any interest in researching your Confederate ancestors during the WBTS. Happy Hunting!!! Happy New Year!!! I have read several of this series, using copies at the Library of Virginia. The history is pretty good, with the sort of bias one would expect of accounts written by Confederate participants (i.e., we would have won if we had not exhausted ourselves killing Yankees). The most helpful part of each history is an appendix that lists in alphabetical order all members of the regiment and a very abbreviated summary of their service records. For example, if you go to the history of the 51st Va. Inf. Rgt, you'll find the sons of Dudley Sandidge and Melinda Smith. You'll learn when each enlisted (two early and one not until 1863), where they trained, any wounds, rank and dates achieved, when died and when or where captured and where interned, when exchanged or released. The unit history itself then gives some of the details of the battles and campaigns. Thus, you can match the dates in the personal records with the dates of engagements to learn, for example, that Valentine Sandidge, along with the remnants of Wharton's Division (750 men) was captured at Waynesboro in March, 1865, by 7,500 men of George Custer's cavalry. You'll learn some interesting tid bits such as the fact that the surrender order was given by a corporal because all the officers of the 51st were dead. I found a few of these regimental histories still in print and for sale at Amazon.com. There is at least one volume I found at the Library of Virginia that purports to list all Confederate soldiers and their units. I have forgotten the name of this volume, but it will be obvious in any library's collection of these materials. Once you have the unit, then you can get to the right regimental history if he is a Virginia ancestor. There is some difficulty in sorting through all the similar names because most soldiers are listed by initials (sorting through the "J. Smith" list is tough), but the number of Sandidges with just initials is not great. Moreover, once you find the unit of one person, you will often find his brothers and cousins in the same unit. The personal military records sometimes contain a pearl such as a date of birth located nowhere else, or even a physical description of the person. ---------- From: RASANDIDGE@aol.com To: SANDIDGE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [SANDIDGE-L] VA Regimental Historical Series Date: Wednesday, December 30, 1998 12:08AM Hello, I found the following information on va-roots@vsla.edu. Hello, Cousins, Wishing you a happy and successful New Year. I lost all my email messages the second week of December so if any one wrote to me for info, please send again your request. We have 67 people signed up for the Sandidge list. We welcome all inquiries about your Sandidge and related ancestors. Also we have archives messages that you may retrieve from Rootsweb at http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl I saw a cousin of mine on another genealogy URL but her email address was no longer active. If anyone has "talked" to Crystal Sandidge with old address of CSandidge@aol.com and has her new one, please email it to me. I received the following info from BobM, mcclurera@email.msn.com. He gave me permission to post it to our list. He wrote: Barbara Wright Genealogical Researcher 150 Busy Baker Road Campbellsville, KY 42718 She's provided all the Sandidge information I have come by. However, a gentlemen: Bryan N. Cowherd 1249 Meadow Lane Frankfort, KY 40601 He wrote an article that appears in Green Co. Review, Vol. 14 #1, Fall 1990 entitled Cowherd Family Connections. "Pleasant Sandidge's grandmother, Elizabeth (Graves) Sandidge (1720-1826) came to Kentucky from Virginia on horseback at the ripe old age of 90 years. Her tombstone still stands in Green County. His great grandfather, William Sandidge, married Ann Taylor, daughter of John Taylor and his wife, Catherine Pendleton, a sister of the distinguished Virginia jurist, Judge Edmund Pendleton." Mr. Cowherd would be 75 today and it says he is with the Kentucky Heritage Council in Frankfort, and other distinguished organizations. I have not contacted him because Barbara now says others who agreed are now switching to Ann Pulliam." BobM goes on to talk about the Green County USGen Web site where other Sandidge researchers seem to be talking about Taylor Vs Pulliam. Rita
Hello Jean, Thanks for responding to my THURMAN enquiry. Sorry, but I dont know which William II you are referring to. I have several William Thurmans but very little information on them. I have only been researching for about a year so obviously have a long way to go. I have no Benge surnames listed either but if they are connected with Thurman then I am very interested. I would appreciate seeing your information if you don't mind. Several of my Thurmans were located in Virginia so I am very envious of you being able to go there for your research. Have a nice trip, and good luck on the research. Hope to hear from you later. Darrell Thurman in Scio, Oregon
I have been interested in the THurman line for two reasons, one my gggrandmother Mary Elizabeth Martin was a descendant of the Benge family . I have several Thurmans this Benge family married into..Also this Mary Elizabeth Martin married Benjamin Thurman Sandidge, son of Stephen Sandidge of Albemarle County, The Benges were also of Va and moved to N.C. How does William II fit into the picture when his daughter Nancy married a Carr...and too this Nancy would have been only 9 years old at the time of the marriage..I love doing genealogy and have been doing so since 1960...I love it when a new idea is all brought to our minds. Challenging and fun....In the morning about 6 we are leaving for Virginia. Did all this happen in Albemarle County...I plan on looking up a lot of things I am curious about. Please answer as soon as possible and maybe I will get your message before I leave. Jean

Hello, My name is Darrell Thurman and I live in Oregon. I am researching THURMAN surname in Virginia, Tennessee and Missouri. According to LDS records submitted by family history researchers (IGI files), NANCY SANDRIDGE b Feb.4, 1759 in Albemarle Co., VA married JOHN THURMAN b Dec. 3, 1751 in Prince Edward Co., VA. I believe them to be my GGGG grandparents, but need to prove that. They married Dec 10, 1780 in Albemarle Co., VA and had 11 children, one being Jabez Thurman b Dec 25, 1795 in Virginia (my GGG grandfather). I cannot find any proof that Jabez is their son, other than John and Nancy lived in Sevier Co. TN in the early 1820s and Jabez owned land in adjoining Blount Co., TN in 1823. Other siblings also lived in and around Blount Co. during the same time period. Having just joined the SANDIDGE cousins I read all the archived messages and see that a lot of research has been going on and that Nancy was the daughter of William Sandidge and Elizabeth Graves. Also another sister of Nancy's married another THURMAN (William). Does anyone have any information on Nancy SANDIDGE and John THURMAN or their children? Or William THURMAN who may be related to my John THURMAN? Any assistance would be appreciated.
I'm looking for Karen Jorgeson (hopefully she's on the Sandidge list), who referenced "The William Sandidge Family" by Margaret Cooke and "Wilcoxson and Allied Families" by Dorothy Wulfeck, and shared information with Dave Dollard. Karen, please contact me if you're out there!
