    3. Rita, I don't know as much about J.J. Sandridge. In the 1860 census there is a J.J. Sandridge, age 23, living with his parents, B. C. Sandridge (1812- ) and S. M. (1818- ). His siblings were Zach Sandridge, (1844- ) and S.A. Sandridge (1846- ). That's all I have. It will be great when I have time to add all those other families from Albemarle that were in the references you posted. 3. Rita, George W. Sandridge was married to Elizabeth A. Walton, and they had a son, James J. Sandridge, born July 1862. George W.'s parents were Benjamin J. Sandridge and Salina Ellett. Benjamin was, in turn, the son of Joshua Sandridge and Susan Beauchamp. Joshua was another son of Stephen and Sarah. I'll have to think about the William. 3. Rita, I answered the previous question before downloading my mail. George M. Sandridge and Ira S. Sandridge are easier- don't even need to look it up in my file. They were sons of Nathan H. Sandridge and Jane H. Gardner. Nathan is a son of Dillard Sandridge and Hannah Epperson. Jane is the daughter of John Gardner and Anna (I think Epperson, but I'm uncertain about that now). George Martin Sandridge and his wife Isabella Theodosa Via are buried in the Sandridge Family Cemetery in Sugar Hollow. One of the sons of this couple was Sandy Franklin Sandridge, my wife's grandfather. He died in the 1960's but was one of my favorite people. RASANDIDGE@aol.com wrote: > > Cousins, > Does anyone know where these SANDRIDGEs belong in the family tree? > Rita Rita, I have Richard Sandrdige (1838- ) and Zachariah Sandridge (1840- ) were sons of Nathan W. Sandridge and Parmelia C. Garrison. They had a younger sister named Parmelia A. Sandridge (1846- ) who married, 22 Sept 1866 a William O. Sandridge (1838). He was the son of Austin Sandridge (1815-1869) and Sarah Jane Sandridge. I don't know about the other R. Sandridge. I only have one or two male Sandridges with first names starting with R that I don't know dates that would rule them out. My file also lists both Nathan W. Sandridge and Austin Sandridge as sons of William Sandridge (1780-1852). I have William married first to Sarah ? and second to Elizabeth Garrison. William's parents were Stephen Sandridge and Sarah (?Henderson). I find it interesting to see the other families represented in that same unit. The Vias, Blackwells, Ballards, Sneeds, Jarman, etc. are the other families right around the early Sandridge home there in Sugar Hollow. I have some more details, but most of the information I have on this line I acquired incidental to sorting out the descendants of Nathan H. Sandridge, who also descended from Stephen and Sarah through Dillard Sandridge. Jim -- James A. Pittman, MD jpittma1@erols.com

Company I was enlisted in Albemarle CO and entered the field in June, 1861. Assigned to PICKETT’s Division, the regiment was actively engaged in the brilliant series of movements of the army of Northern VA, and its battles included Bull Run, 1st Manassas, Williamsburg, 7 Pines, Fraziers Farm, second Manassas, South Mountain, Sharpsburg, Gettysburg, Bermuda Hundreds, the seven days fighting around Richmond, the battles around Petersburg, and the fighting on the retreat to Appomattox, where it was surrendered. At Gettysburg only three members of I CO in the action fell back unwounded from the charge of Pickett’s Division on the Heights, while many of its members gave their lives in that heroic endeavor to turn the tide of battle. THE SECOND VIRGINIA CAVALRY Was among the first VA troops to respond to her call to arms, entering the field in May, 1861, and assigned to Fitz Lee’s Brigade, Stuart’s Division. It took gallant part in the first Manassas battle and through the remainder of 1861 was in all the skirmishing and fighting under the brilliant cavalry leader, "Jeb" Stuart; went into winter quarters five miles west of Manassas Junction, until after Christmas, then broke camp and moved to Leesburg, in Loudoun county, remaining there until the spring of 1862. Took active part in Jackson’s summer campaign, chasing Banks across the Potomac, fighting Fremont at Cross Keys, and driving Shields down Page valley; then crossing the blue Ridge the regiment took cars for Richmond, arriving there in season to participate in the ‘Seven Days Battles." Went under Jackson to Gordonsville, and at Manaponax Church, en route for Fredericksburg, in august, 1862, attacked two brigades of Federal cavalry, and in August, 1862, attacked two brigades of Federal cavalry, and routed them. Took part in the battles of Cedar Run, pursued Pope across the Rappahannock, fighting at Kellys Ford; engaged at Catletts Station, capturing Pope’s private baggage, horses, wagons, and a number of prisoners. Engaged with heavy loss at second Manassas, then in the Maryland campaign, sharing in the capture of Harpers Ferry, then hurrying back to participate in the Sharpsburg battle. Returning to the valley, skirmished there until winter headquarters were made at Berryville. Shared in the movement of Lee’s army in 1863, until after the Pennsylvania invasion, including Gettysburg, cutting the telegraph lines at Chambersburg, raiding Emnmettsburg and Hopestown; then returning to the Potomac, via Frederick City, Maryland, fighting Pleasanton’s cavalry on the way. Spent the fall and winter of 1863 in the Virginia valley, with winter headquarters at Culpeper Court House and from that time until the close of the war was joined in fortune with the Army of Northern Virginia. Company K of this regiment was mainly Albemarle county volunteers.

    2. I am going to put the info that has SANDRIDGEs in the Civil War from Albemarle Co, VA on the list so it will be in the archives for future Sandridge researchers. Doris, the lady who typed it on VA-Roots, gave me permission. Rita Doris wrote: I live in Albemarle CO and have recently acquired an old text about its history. The book is decidely pro-Confederate in its view of the War, which is to be expected for a book published 1884 in VA. I am NOT a Civil War expert and I have nothing further to tell about any of this information. I place it here only to help others. Please do NOT contact me asking for further information. I shall eventually send all of the given information to the list. It has taken days of typing to complete this task, so please forgive some abbreviations which I have taken the liberty to use. My own ancestry which came from this area is pro-Union, so please do not chide me for the pro-South sentiment...I'm giving the information as recounted in the source. HISTORY OF ALBEMARLE COUNTY Albemarle County in the Civil War Of the stern realities of war within its own borders Albemarle county had no experience during the War between the States until the Spring of 1865, when Sheridan’s raid against the Danville and South Side railroads brought a portion of his vandal troops through Scottsville. About one-fourth of the village was burned and the insults and injuries usually attendant upon such incursions inflicted on the citizens. A number of the Federals were captured. The county furnished for actual service in the field more than its quota of men, and the majority of its citizens, to the close of the struggle for independence and State sovereignty, were unfalteringly loyal to the Confederate States government. The fortunes of war have left the muster rolls of the Confederate States government mainly in the possession of the enemy, and it is believed that the following roll of Honor of the Soldiers who fought for the Lost Cause from Albemarle is as complete as it can be made. The publishers of the Encyclopeida have spared no effort or cost to make it so. [Where no other date of enlistment is given, it was in the first year of the war. Where no other date is given of death or discharge, the service was till the close of the war. Where no rank is given, the enlistment was as private. In the miscellany are rosters of some now residents in this county, who enlisted and served from other counties.] NINETEENTH VIRGINIA INFANTRY, HUNTON’S BRIGADE, PICKETT’S DIVISION, LONGSTREET’S CORPS [Regimental history furnished by Adjutant C. C. Wertenbaker.] The 19th Regiment of Virginia Infantry was composed of the following companies: CO. A, Monticello guard, from Charlottesville, and was commanded by Capt. W. B. Mallory at the time it was called into service. Co. B., Albemarle Rifles, Capt. R. T. W. Duke from Charlottesville, Co. C. Scottsville Guards, Capt. A. W. Gantt. Co. D., Howardsville Guards, Capt. Josiah Faulkner. Co. E., Piedmont Guards, Capt. Charles Peyton, from the Stony Point neighborhood, Albemarle county. Co. F, Capt. Bennett Taylor, raised in different parts of Albemarle county, Co. G, Capt. Thomas Boyd, from Nelson county, in the Tye River neighborhood. Co. H., Capt. Ellis, from Amherst Courthouse, Virginia. Co. I, Capt. Taylor Berry, Amherst county. Co. K, Albemarle county men. The first colonel of the regiment was Philip St. George Cocke, of Powhaten, who, up to the time the Virginia troops were turned over to the Confederate government commanded the whole of the VA forces in northern VA. He never took command of the regiment, and the only official act he ever performed as colonel of the Nineteenth was to appoint First Lieutenant C. C. Wertenbaker, of Co. A, as adjutant of the regiment. Gen. Cocke commanded the Third Brigade (in which the Nineteenth was) and after the first battle of Manassas was promoted brigadier general. He committed suicide soon after, and the writer has no doubt that his having been taken from the supreme command of the VA army, and reduced to a regimental commander, was what caused his death. Lieutenant-Colonel John Bowie Strange was the actual commander of the regiment, and to him was due the drill and discipline of the command. Major Henry Gantt, of Scottsville, was the third field officer. Companies A and B went to the first capture of Harper’s Ferry, but were ordered back by Governor Letcher, and after a few days at home in Charlottesville, spent in equipping themselves for the struggle they knew was coming, they were ordered to Culpeper Courthouse. There the other seven companies joined them, and the command was sent to the front at Manassas. They were not fully engaged at first Manassas, as they were holding Lewis ford in the early part of July 21, but they were holding Lewis Ford in the early part of July 21, but got into the battle just before its close. They lost one man killed and several wounded. The Nineteenth from this time forward was part of Longstreet’s command, and was hotly engaged in nearly all of the battles in Virginia-Williamsburg, Seven Pines, Seven Days Fight Around Richmond, the battles in Maryland, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Cold Harbor, Five Forks, Sailors Creek, etc. They saw service in North Carolina, etc., indeed, were in nearly all the battles Col. Strange was killed at Boonesboro, on South Mountain, Col. Ellis at Gettysburg. Co.. Henry Gantt was badly wounded at Gettysburg. Major Woodson was killed whilst commanding the regiment at second Cold Harbor. Co. Charles Peyton lost an arm in Maryland, and many men were killed in battle and many died from wounds and exposure. The regiment numbered about 800 men when first formed. Its conduct was always excellent in the filed, and its "esprit du corps" was excellent to the last. It, together with the remnant of Pickett’s Division, was captured at Sailors Creek just before the surrender. The battle flag o f this regiment, now in possession of Sergeant James Persley, of Charlottesville, was the one used by the Nineteenth for a portion of the time it was in service. When it became too much shot to pieces to hold together, a new flag was substituted. The regiment had several whilst in service. The men who served in this regiment have, since the war, been quiet and hard-working citizens, an, with few exceptions, are respected and law-abiding men. The roster of many of this regiment from Albemarle county will be found in the miscellaneous service. COMPANY A, NINETEENTH VIRGINIA INFANTRY. Captain, William B. 3. For those of you asking about the Woods book about Albemarle County. There are actually three different histories of the county that I have copies of. The Woods book and a later one are generally available in book stores in Charlottesville. I have copies of both of them and have seen them off and on over the years. I haven't looked lately, but I assume the reprint of the Wood book is still available. I don't have the book here at the office, but have been re-reading it lately so it is at my bedside. It is an interesting book in that over half of it is short family histories of many of the early families in Albemarle County. Unfortunately, neither the Via nor the Sandridge family are covered in their own history, but are mentioned in passing in other parts of the book. The Maupin family is included, but the information is scanty. I'm interested in a number of lines also and fine it valuable. After the family history section there is a sort of almanac of the county, with lists of people filling various offices by year. It also has lists of people that migrated from the county to other states, and this is organized by state. I must warn you that this is not a scholarly work, it is not organized for easy retrieval of data, and is generally unreferenced. It was written by Rev Woods and has the vantage point of having been written in 1901 when he descended from one of those families and a lot of family history was still intact among the older generations- I treat it in the category of the oral history that you wish you had asked great aunt Lucy before she died 30 years ago. The much later history by Moore is more of a history. It is direr, more scholarly, and probably better referenced. It is interesting to a student of the county per se, but not very enlightening about families, unless perhaps you are descended from the Jeffersonian crowd in the eastern half of the county. Not much on the families in the foothills and hollows of the Blue Ridge where my interest lies. -- James A. Pittman, MD jpittma1@erols.com
