    1. [SANDIDGE-L] Captain John SANDIDGE: Obit From Green Co. Paper
    2. This information was originally supplied to the Green Co., KY mailing list (KYGREEN-L) by Tiffany Luchetta <TLuchetta@aol.com> Greensberg paper Aug. 10, 1832 DIED-at his residence in this county, on Thursday night last, the 26 th ??? Captain JOHN SANDEDGE, in the 72 d year of his age. The Cause of his death was probably apoplexy; four or five attacks of which he had previously suffered. The day before his death he was well as usual; ate a pretty hearty supper, laughed and talked with his friends afterwards, and then retired to bed in unusuaily cheerful spirits. But morning, to the regret of his friends and the deep affliction of his family, he was found a corpse! Capt. SANDIDGE was one of that revered band of patriots that fought and bled in the cause of our Independence. He was a native of Virginia; but for the last 20 or 25 years has been a resident of this county. His doors were always open to hospitality; and kindness, benevolence, with correctness of moral sentiment and deportment, were distinguished traits of his character. His memory will long be cherished by all who knew him and the exalted station which he occupied in the affections of his family and neighbors must forever remain unfilled. 1. [SANDIDGE-L] Hawkins County, TN
    2. There is a book being published by the Hawkins County, TN Historical and Genealogical Society. The cutoff date is 30 April 1999 for family articles. While I was checking some of my Sandridge info I saw that there were Sandidge/Sandridge familles living in Hawkins County. It would be nice if someone would put articles in for this family. They have the info about the book listed on their web page. That is where I saw it. Imogean McDonald

    3. Okay, Den -- appears not only dna tells about ourselves -- this is first I ever heard that fingerprints tell your heritage -- wonder what the Hugenots fingerprints look like....... for the lists -- thought you might like to read this (came on newgen list) -- maybe we all need to compare our dna and fingerprints and this way match us all up by lineages??? Maybe someday we won't be doing the generation charts but DNA/Fingerprint charts??? Judy M. >It may interest some of you that your fingerprints actually hold >information about your ancestry. > >Having recently been burgled, the police fingerprinters came and collected >prints from around the house and then took mine and my partners (so they >could check any prints). > >Paul and I were fascinated by all this and the officers were very patient >with our questions of how it worked. They inked us up (fingers and >complete hands) and took additional prints. They then asked where we were >born. 3. This is interesting and something of which I had not been aware -- I know from now on I will be asking for the Complete records as opposed to just the probate records for my family members. I asked for permission to put this out to ya'll and he said yes. Here it is. 3. Elsie, I saw your query, but wanted to check my records before responding. I didn't find anything, and my mother-in-law is no longer around. Marion would have been her first cousin. I'll tell you what I do know about his family. You asked for more information about Marion Sandridge, oldest son of Leander L. Sandridge and Cora Thomas Bailey. I cannot find any other references to him. Leander and Cora are buried in the Sandridge Family Cemetery, in Sugar Hollow. There are four of Gilmore's siblings buried there with the parents. Gilmore died in the First World War. Brother Robert L. evidently served in the war, as his tombstone has SFC (Sergeant First Class) on it. However he died in 1929. Sister Cora Thomas Sandridge died in 1931, also around 30 years of age. One possibility of two young adults dying would be tuberculosis. I have thought for years that this was the explanation, and I must have gotten this from my mother-in-law, who was Leander's niece. Something also rings a bell about them being connected to the Blue ridge Sanitorium, which was nearby, I think in the county or in Charlottesville. We know that Gilmore was 7 years old in 1900. He may have been lost in action in the First World War or met the same fate of his siblings. He's not buried with the rest of the family. 1. Re: [SANDIDGE-L] Nathan W. Sandridge
    2. James Pittman
    3. Rita, You asked where I get my information. When I first started I wasn't as careful as I should have been in documenting sources. I've spent a lot of time wandering around the Whitehall/Sugar Hollow/Batesville part of Albemarle County. I used to photograph tombstone inscription, but then I started dictating them into a micro recorder. Since my wife descends from at least 16 or 18 families in that part of that county, I've been interested in all the families that were there in colonial days. Her mother was a Sandridge (Stephen/Dillard/Nathan H./George Martin/Sandy Franklin/Virginia Anna Sandridge). I used to drive around the back roads with her telling me about the different families- with a tape recorder turned on. She remembered things far better by seeing them, than when I would ask questions in the living room. Some of the best stories are from that oral history. I have so much raw stuff that I haven't assimilated into the database, and I don't know where it fits. I abstracted all the marriages up to nearly 1940 several years ago, but only entered the ones I recognized. Now that I've entered about half the obituaries I need to go over the cemetery and marriage notes again. But back to your question. I have been mulling over the Stephen Sandridge birth and marriage dates that are incompatible. Dillard's son, Stephen C. Sandridge, born 1801, married Mary Maupin Gardner (daughter of John Gardner and sister of Jane H. Gardner, who married Nathan H. Sandridge). Stephen Sandridge married 'Mira Gardner' on 27 March 1821 in Albemarle County, Virginia. The GRS Automated Archives #229 gives Stephen Sandridge marrying Mary M. Gardner on 22 March 1821. In John Gardner's will, dated 1 May 1861, contained, in part, these provisions: "First my will is that all of my estate both real and personal be sold and the proceeds to be equally divided between the following of my children, namely, Sarah M. Madon, Garland T. Gardner, B. B. Gardner, Jane H. Sandridge, James D. Gardner, Judith A. Marshall, each one of the above one of my children to have one equal part of my estate after the special legacies hereinafter named is taken out. Second it is my will that Stephen G. Sandridge shall have one equal part of my estate during his life, after his death to return to those of my children first named." This certainly suggests that his first wife had expired by this time. The marriage of Stephen G. Sandridge to Susan L. Pritchett on 2 May 1860 is found in Albemarle marriage book 1, page 13, line 43. I think its a little odd that his first father-in-law would mention him in his will after he had remarried. Two other dates I have for this marriage are 26 and 28 June 1860. The 1860 census of Albemarle County lists Stephen Sanditch, 59, Susan 47, and S. A., female, 37. I think this is the same Stephen Sandridge, now remarried to Susan Pritchett, and with an unmarried 37 year old daughter living with them. I cannot put my hand on the specific reference tonight, but I thought I remembered him from the 1850 census living in Charlottesville with wife Mary M. and a brother John, that by 1860 was living with Nathan H. Sandridge, who also had parents Dillard and Hannah living with them. John was at some later point described as being mentally retarded and it seems brothers Nathan and Stephen took turns taking care of him. Now lets skip ahead to another Stephen G. Sandridge. Nathan W. Sandridge, in the 1850 census, was 50 years old, married to Pamelia, age 40, and among other children had a son, Zachariah, age 10 (born 1840). I think it is this Zachariah Sandridge that married Mary F. Sandridge on 10 Dec 1866. There was another Zachariah Sandridge in the 1860 census, listed as 16 year old son ( b. 1844) of B.C.Sandridge, 48 and S.M., 42. I cannot be sure which Zachariah is which, nor am I sure they are not the same person. 1870 census has Zachariah Sandridge, 26, with wife Mary, 24, and son James. 1880 census has Zach Sandridge, 36, wife Mary, 36, and five children, from James down to Stephen G., age 6 months. 1920 census has Stephen Sandridge, age 42, married to Hessie, age 30, with Lillian, 17, Lizzie, 15, and Noble, 13. I realize this would have made Hessie 13 when Lillian was born. Possible, or the dates could be off. Two doors down Zachariah and Mary F., both aged 72, are living. I have searched other records I have and cannot find any other references. If I find more I will follow up with you. 1. [SANDIDGE-L] Carter of Amherst Co. VA
    2. Josephine Lindsay Bass
    3. Hi all, in this article Mary Ann Bickley was m. to DALE carter - I have her m. to Solomon Carter and the mother of Peter who m. Elizabeth Sandidge 1767-1808. Can someone help and tell me more abt the Carter family. this is a neat article and really good site. josie Dale Carter Killed At Blackmore's Fort By Emory L. Hamilton >From the unpublished manuscript, Indian Atrocities Along the Clinch, Powell and Holston Rivers, pages 18-19. On the same day that Colonel Shelby's Negro girl was captured, Logan, who must have split his raiding party, sending one part against Ft. Blackmore which secretly approached the fort and got within 75 yards before being discovered. Most of the men were sitting upon some logs which lay a short distance from the gate. Evidently seeing this the Indians decided to make a bold push and enter the fort before the men could recover from their surprise. Creeping along the river bank, hidden by the bank and a fringe of brush and trees, they were just ready to push into the fort when they were discovered by Dale Carter, who was about fifty-five steps from the fort and who cried, "Murder! Murder!" Upon hearing Carter's alarm, the men ran towards the fort and succeeded in reaching the gate before the Indians. Frustrated in their designs of entering the fort they turned upon Dale Carter. One Indian shot at him, but missed him; another shot him through the thigh, inflicting a wound which rendered him too lame to escape into the fort. Another Indian ran up to Carter, tomahawked and scalped him. In a letter (1) dated October 12, 1774, from Major Arthur Campbell to Col. William Preston, he says: It is remarkable that Captain Shelby's wench was taken the same day, and about the same time of day, that this affair happened on Clinch. So many attacks in so short a time, give the inhabitants very alarming apprehensions. Want of ammunition and scarcity of provisions are again become the general cry. Since I began this, I am mortified with the sight of a family flying by. If ammunition does not soon come, I will have no argument that will have any force to detain them; and if our army is not able to keep a garrison at the Falls (Louisville) the ensuing winter, I expect we shall be troubled with similar visits the greater part of the coming season. At a court held for Washington County, on March 18, 1778, Thomas Carter, brother of Dale, was appointed Administrator of his estate, with Richard Stanton and William Houston as his securities. The estate was appraised by Archibald Scott, Joseph Butcher, John Carter (another brother) and Richard Stanton. The Carter brothers, John, Thomas, and Dale, had settled on the north side of Clinch river, near Blackmore's Fort about 1772. Their land grants were surveyed for them and entered in the Fincastle Survey Book on March 26, 1774. Dale Carter was born August 9, 1744, and was married to Mary Ann Bickley, daughter of John Bickley of Red Hill, Amherst County, VA and a sister of Charles Bickley who settled in Castlewood. There is a tradition that young Charles Bickley (1759-1839) came to the frontier to escort his widowed sister back to Amherst County, but liked the country and decided to stay. There is no evidence o f his being on the frontier prior to this date and 15 years would have been a tender age for a boy to settle at a frontier outpost without family ties. Dale Carter was a son of Charles and Lucy Morgan Carter and a direct descendant of Captain Thomas Carter (1672-1733) perhaps the first of the line in Virginia. Capt. Daniel Smith with 26 men went in pursuit of Indians who killed Carter (Arthur Campbell to Preston, October 12, 1774, Draper Mss 3 QQ 18). The next day October 13, 1774, Daniel Smith wrote Preston of their unsuccessful pursuit of Indians and mentions petition of lower settlers that Boone be appointed Captain (Draper Mss 3 QQ 119). (1) Draper Mss 3 QQ 118.
