I have Katherine Sandford, who was born in 1652 in Leonard Stanley, Gloucestershire County, England and died about 1684 in Old Rappahannock, York County, Virginia and married Robert Hopkins about 1668 in Old Rappahannock, York County, Virginia, but as I was trying to find out who Katherine's parents were, I saw that several people have listed her father as John Scrope, who was born about 1625 in Bolton, Lancashire County, England and died about 1646 in London, Middlesex County, England and I was wondering why would Katherine have a different surname from her father? My thinking is that she married a Mr. Sandford before she married Robert Hopkins and I was wondering if anyone could please help me answer this question?
