My local library's copy is currently lost, but could someone on the list check Persis McMillan's "Currents of Malice: ...Mary Towne Esty and the Salem Witchcraft Hunts"--title is from memory but starts Currents of Malice on something for me According to the author, one of the "afflicted girls," Mary Warren, John Proctor's maidservant, had a father living in the Salem area(he had a run-in with a neighbor about not plowing a field for the neighbor)at the time of the witchcraft crisis. She also had a mother whom the author suggests may have been mentally ill and a sister with some sort of disability(possibly deaf I thought from my memory of what I read some time ago when my library's copy still existed. I do remember that the author said Mary Warren is the only one of the afflicted that there exists some idea of what she looked like from a contemporary quote from someone who attended at least a trial or hearing or saw her "I saw Mary Warren and another fair face" Boyer and Nissenbaum didn't list Mary Warren's family in their list of Salem Village inhabitants I don't recall in their "Salem Village Witchcraft : A Documentary Record" so her family lived elsewhere. A fiction novel I read years ago made Mary the niece of Sarah Warren Prince Osbourne, but lots of Warrens(and variant spellings thereof) existed in Massachusetts alone, so I don't know if the author got ahold of Sarah's family tree and located Mary's father as Sarah's brother or just figured two Warrens in the same neighborhood had to be related. I'm interested in tracking down the histories and families of the afflicted children--we know what happened to some--but as it used to be a mark of shame to have had an ancestor accused, convicted or hung for witchcraft and now is finally something to be proud of, so should descendents of there accusers(and those interested in them like myself)hunt what information we can down and maybe get a more complete story(or better add more questions and mysteries to the "case")on what made the Salem witchcraft outbreak so unique. I have some information gleaned from the Family Search Archives at Salt Lake City at their website on Mercy Lewis Allen(or Allan) if anyone is interested. Thanks loads
