Correction to an earlier note - the Towne sisters, Mary, Rebecca, and Sarah were not sisters to Martha Carrier. In fact, I know of know familial relationship between the Carriers and Townes, or the Carriers and Bridges, Nurses, Cloyes or Eastys (husbands to the Towne sisters) Although some of the people involved with the witchcraft trials in the Salem Village/Topsfield/Salem Town area DID have a familial connection somewhere to these women, it doesn't appear Ms. Carrier did. Also - Sarah Towne Bridges Cloyes DID NOT confess as a witch, thus saving herself. She and sister Mary fought valiantly to convince the judges of their innocence. The records do not show that she ever was sentenced. The reason that Sarah was saved and Mary and Rebecca not is unknown, however some sources record that Sarah escaped prison with the help of family and friends and was hidden in a cave or unused mine until the prisoners were freed. There were copper mines in the area that the Towne family were aware of because they owned/worked in them in later years. After the 'witches' were freed, Sarah and family fought to clear the names of herself and her sisters. See the movie "Three Sovereigns for Sarah" that chronicles her life - available at some larger video stores. Not sure how factual it is, but it is at least interesting.
