Being a descendant of Mary Easty, I would love to see pictures of Salem, or anything concerning Mary and her family. Are you going to post them on a web page? Thanks.
Cute story Nicol. Out of the mouths of babes.... Mary was my 7th G-Grandmother George Estey

I visited Salem last May and will be returning again in September. It is such a fun place to do family history and find information on ancestors. My ancestor Joseph Ring testified against Susannah Martin. It was fun to see his testimony and his name in the books. I also descend from Mary Perkins Bradford who was the only one to escape from the dungeons. He testimony is recorded and fun to read. Is anyone else researching these lines? I am going to Salem in October, I plan to take lots of digital photos, too. My husband is descended from Mary Easty. I would love tips from those that have visited Salem as I have never been there before. I think that you all might find this funny, I know my family has roared with laughter at my expense. I am 'into' the whole New Age 'thing' always have been. Halloween is big in our house. Only in the fun sense for kids no scary stuff, lots of fog. Costume party for kids. I have an old corn broom that my son and I decorated and now we use it as a Halloween dec. by our door. He firmly believes that I can fly on it. Hey, he's only four once, right? He's very interested in family history and asks LOTS of questions about who grandma's mother is and so on. So I told him that we're going to Salem to visit where his 9th times gr-grandma died. I gave a very brief simple explanation of why and how she died. He's four going on twelve and has had all grandparents and and all but one greats die in the last four years. No big mystical scary stuff in death for this kid. So, keeping that in mind, I explain that the folks that died were falsely accused of being witches. That they were actually Christians and that they people that did it found out they were wrong and........ He interrupts me, puts his little hand on my shoulder and says, "When we get to Massachew-sits are they going to kill you, mommy?" The family loved it. Visions of me in a pointy hat, green wart on my nose with my red ruby slippers, I am sure. I assured him that no one gets killed in Salem anymore. And that I would be quite well when we left there. Then he asked if daddy would buy me a new broom while we were there. Cute. Thank you all for the website URLs. I checked them but apparently not many researchers are descended from Rebecca Towne Nurse's son Samuel. (I notice several researchers don't even list him as a child of Francis Nurse & Rebecca Towne.) I'll keep looking. I don't have any Elizabeth b. 1724 to Jonathan & Rebecca (Nurse) Kinne. They had 5 children born between 1712 and 1720. I'd be interested in knowing who she married & why you place her in this family. I'm trying to place a Lydia Kenney who was b. 1755 and m. Samuel HARWOOD at Sutton in 1775. I think she may be a daughter of Nathan who was b. to Jonathan & Rebecca (Nurse) Kinne in 1717/1718. Hi All, I'm looking for information on the children of Rebecca Nurse (Samuel, Francis) & Jonathan Kinne (Thomas, Henry). Specifically on who I believe to be their youngest daughter, Elizabeth born about 1724 in Sutton, MA. Is anyone descended from Elizabeth and/or do you have further info on her? Thank you, everyone, for your kind responses to my request. I am going to print out all the online versions, and I just got the first set of photos developed - they came out beautifully! I will scan them in this or next weekend and take up the offers I received to place them online. Margo, of course, is on that list! Thanks to all! _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com

I was extrememly fortunate yesterday in being invited by descendants of Mary Easty to view a desk that belonged to her, upon which she wrote two appeals in which she explained that she had always followed the "rules", and that now the rules (of the witchcraft trials) had changed, and she was unable to comprehend what the rules now were. Marked across an internal board was her signature. The desk is about two feet by one foot, and the top folds out and over to form the desk. There is a small locking side drawer. Also contained within the desk was a cloth bookcover, with a small one inch by one half inch cut out where the title would be on the book's binding, to allow the name of the book to show through the cover. On its front was a design. I took many photographs, and will scan them and send them to the list manager, with whom I shared a tour of the Sarah Clayes house in Salem End in Framingham (the house still sits, unrestored and deteriorating, apparently the estimate of restoration being far greater than anticipated). She may be gracious enough to post them or know someone who would. What I am trying to find is a good copy and/or translation of those two appeals to authorities. I apologize if they are already on the 'net and easily found - generally I try very hard to search for information before I ask people to assist me, but I have just started building my new home, am in the middle of trying to complete my town's 5 year open space plan, trying to save 14.5 acres of open space that the neighboring town wants to sell because it is in a heavily populated poorer area (and is heavily used by those people, who have nothing else but their rows upon rows of dense apartment and condominium buildings, separated by acres of parking lot and little open green space), plus I work full time, and I can barely find the time to read my email right now. So, not wanting to ask for something without offering something in return, I offer the photos of this incredible find. Thanks in advance - you all are a wonderful group, and I look forward to seeing postings from this list in my email. _________________________________________________________________ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com
On the Alfred A Knopf publisher website, there are some advance blurbs for the forthcoming Mary Beth Norton book on the 1692 Salem witchcraft crisis "In the Devil's Snare" This book will publish for $30.00 and according to Barnes & Noble(bn.com) will publish on Sep 10th. The "blurbs" indicate that Dr. Norton's focus is wider-spread than just the Salem area and brings to the fore the effect of past, current and possible future attacks on settlements by Native Americans had on the psyche of residents as the real major reasons for the witchcraft crisis. Of course, this is just what I gleaned from the blurbs and we won't know until the book comes out and we have a chance to read it ourselves. Cindy Abel

Greetings one and all! My aunt, a member of the Andover Historical Society, just forwarded a postcard announcement to me about Frances Hill's new book, "Hunting for Witches: A Visitor's Guide to the Salem Witch Trials," published by Commonwealth Editions, $9.95, ISBN 1-889833-30-4. Hill is also the author of "A Delusion of Satan" and "The Salem Witch Trials Reader." I have not seen the book yet, but I found this description at amazon.com: "Take a tour through time. Find the hidden paths and places where so-called witches and their accusers walked in 1692 Salem. This book reveals the truth behind the myths and helps you locate the important houses, churches, and streets of that terrifying time. Maps, photographs, and detailed instructions for touring more than fifty sites will help you understand the Salem witch trials and the people who endured them." The postcard also announced a book-signing/lecture by Hill called "Hunting for Witches Beyond Salem" to be held July 18, 2002 at 7:30 a.m. at the Gould Barn at Topsfield Common, in Massachusetts. Admission is $5.00. Sponsored by the Topfield, Andover, and North Andover Historical Societies. RSVP Salem Witch Museum 978-745-1692. Perhaps I might see some of you there? :D Cheers, Margo -- Margo Burns, List Owner of the SALEM-WITCH List at Rootsweb.com margo@ogram.org
The first issue of the new German E-Journal "zeitenblicke" is dedicated to research into witchcraft. One article is in the English language: Written by the Australian scholar Charles Zika treats he the role of the iconography of the ancient sorceress Circe, especially in printed woodcuts, in the formation of the discourse on witchcraft in the 15th and 16th century. Another article may be interesting for those who can read German: Torsten Reimer visited the American Salem Witch Museum and reports vividly on the intensely commercial adaptation of the infamous Salem Witch trials of 1692.
