This is taken loosely from Mary Beth Norton's book, "In The Devil's Snare": Elizabeth Booth: Married Israel Shaw in Salem on 12/26/1695 and had at least two children. Sarah Churchwell: married Edward Andrews on 8/11/1709 in Berwick, Maine, after being fined for premarital fornication. Betty Hubbard: moved with the Griggs family to Gloucester and married John Bennet of that town and had four children. Mercy Lewis: moved to Greenland, NH to live with her sister. Had a bastard child in 1695, and married Charles Allen in 1701 -- probably the father. Later lived in Boston. Bettty Parris: married Benjamin Barron in Sudbury in 1710. They had five children. Ann Putnam, Jr.: died unmarried in May 1715. Joined the Salem Village church in 1706, which is when she asked for public forgiveness for her part in convicting people who she now believed to have been innocent. Susannah Sheldon: went to Providence, RI to live with a relative. In 1694, she was called before the town council as a "person of Evill fame," and probably ordered out of town. Probably died unmarried before 1697, and therefore was likely the girl Rev. Hale described as experimenting with the egg white and the Venus glass, since that unnamed girl was dead by the time he wrote his book about the trials that year. Mary Walcott: married Isaac Farrar of Woburn in 1696, settling there and then in Ashford, CT. They had 6 children. Mary Warren and Abigail Williams: cannot be traced. Cheers, Margo

    2. I have just recently discovered that a relative of mine - Nicholas Noyes - was one of the judges for the trials, which has increased my interest in this topic. But I have long been curious -- has anyone ever researched the young girls to see what happened to them. Were they able to live out normal lives?

    3. Sounds like a good idea to me..... I am working on this type of project in my gen society only with Mayflower ancestors. I set up a Generations (or FTM or whichever you choose) tree to hold the info. I included *only* names as my project was to show connectedness and not facts. 2. Hi George and all, I don't think they got anything "mixed up", I don't believe they worried about representing ANYTHING factually!! In this movie, John Proctor was hanged along side Rebecca Nurse, and he was the only man in that group; according to the RECORDS, John was hanged a month after Rebecca, and Martha Carrier was the only women in that group of five who were hanged on August 19th. I think they took "artistic license" to a new level with this one!!! 1. [SALEM-WITCH-L] Re: CBS Special
    2. It is no wonder that history in school books gets polluted and rewritten. You can blame the Hollywood money mongers for a great portion of that. Fiction is OK but don't fictionalize a real event and represent it as the TRUTH. I was disappointed in the lack of recognition for those who lost their lives to this dilution. You would have thought that CBS would have at least mentioned names of those who were executed in the epilog. Margo, I applaud you for going to the effort to document the trials and times of this event. I know it must be a monumental task. I pray it will dispel the drivel that was just paraded before us as "TRUTH." Speaking of truth, I believe that eight were hanged on September 22, 1692. Martha Corey, Margaret Scott, Mary Easty, Alice Parker, Ann Pudeator, Wilmott Redd, Samuel Wardwell, and Mary Parker. The CBS people said five were execute and they showed five hanging nooses over a tree limb. Am I wrong or how did CBS get it so wrong if they were being advised by a knowledgeable person? Or could it be that they got the July 19th hangings of Rebecca Nurse, Susannah Martin, Elizabeth Howe, Sarah Good, and Sarah Wildes (five women) mixed up with the eight on Sept. 22nd? George W. 3. Although it is several centuries after our interest in Salem, I ran across a photo today at the Library of Congress that many members of the list may want to see. There was a devastating fire in 1914. To see a panoramic photo, go here: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/d?pan:20:./temp/~ammem_8NN4: AND MAKE SURE YOU DON'T LOSE THE COLON OFF THE END OF THE URL!!! Then go to Photo 37 by using the "NEXT PAGE" link at the bottom of the page you're taken to. Click on Photo 37 to get to an info page with a small picture. Click on the small picture to see a larger version of the kind of physical devastation most of us will be spared in our lives. Knowing this is Salem, the photo affected me not so much as representation of physical devastation, but as a metaphor for the spiritual devastation of the town after the 1692 trials. -- Lisa

    2. There are many books on the trials. For a beginning, and relatively easily found, both Norton's _In The Devil's Snare_ and Boyer & Nissenbaum's _Salem Possessed_ have definite viewpoints, but there is good information to be had from them. The works of Frances Hill (_The SWT Reader_, IIRC) and Marilynne Roach's _The Salem Witch Trials: A Day-by-day Chronicale of a Community under seige_ also seem to have good information, although I have nto read either carefully enough yet to comment on any bias.

The Wardwell family is mentioned in most books, but I see you are right: I don't see any that gives them a lot of attention. > I was also wondering if where the witch trials took place is actually > located in the Salem of today The location of various episodes can be confusing. What we have the most extensive records of are the examinations of the accused in Salem Village -- the present-day town of Danvers -- examinations which took place most frequently in the meeting house and Ingersoll's tavern. Salem Town was the Essex County seat, which is more likely where the trials took place. > is Andover still a separate town? There are actually two towns now -- Andover and North Andover.
