Genealogy.com is running a 14-day *free* trial of their "Family History Library." They demand a charge card, and if you have any sense, you'll cancel on the 13th day to avoid arguments. I mention this because one of the books available in this is "Avery, Clara Arlette, The Averell-Averill-Avery family : a record of the descendants of William and Abigail Averell of Ipswich, Mass. United States: unknown, 190-?, 1135 pgs " This is the family that was involved in the witch trials, and if it's your family, you must take a look. She took the line back to Europe, and the book is heavily footnoted, too. The publication date must have been after 1906, because there's a 1906 quote on the title page, but my guess from the typeface is that it wasn't much after. I don't enjoy genealogy.com because their site is so clumsy and expensive. For instance, if you sign up for this, you'll need to fish out your name and password from an email they'll send you. (If you have an existing account, these may be the same as your existing name and password). Then, existing account or not, you'll have to log off and log back in, being sure to use the "My Genealogy.com" button near the top of the page, and after clicking on that to make the pulldown menu appear, then go to the "My data subscriptions." It is a pain in the tush, especially since you may be tricked to logging on when on the home page, which will not get you where you want to go. So caveat emptor! But I thought all you Avery-Averills would want to know.

Cindy's report is something I expected to see presently -- that some clans at Salem Village many have had both accused and accusers among them, almost under the same roof, figuratively speaking anyway, during the witch trials. For example, the Andrews. (The Andrews were Villagers, weren't they? I'm not sure.) There really should be other clans in the same pickle. Boyer and Nissenbaum count 25 accused at Salem Village. They also count 105 "householders" total. If spread evenly, that would be one accused witch in every fourth home. But, in reality there would be some reductions. Several of the 25 were all Townes. But also, several of the 105 households were also all Townes in one way or another. Etc., etc. And in such a small population, the in-law network must have been tight indeed. There is something here that argues against the conspiracy theories and in favor of the panic theory, but I'll be doggone if I can put it together. Insufficient data, I suppose. But it seems to me that the more clans (including close in-laws) that had both accused and accusers answerable to a common patriarch, the more the whole event looks like a general panic. But, how many such clans were there? Figuring that out could take years. Cathy Brinkman mentions that Rebecca Nurse (the granddaughter) married Kenry Kinne at Sutton, MA. I wonder when the wedding was held. Also, which of the various Nurses and Kinnes went to Sutton, MA and when they went. Holyoke Putnam, son of Edward Jr and stepson of the widow Martha (Hartshorn) Nurse also went to Sutton, MA. Holyoke went to Sutton perhaps either by 1738 or in 1744. This makes me wonder if some sort of caravan full of people moved from Salem Village to Sutton in a bunch. Or if a pathfinder went there and invited the others to follow. Finding descendants of both accusers and accused in the same migration would be interesting. Yes, Francis Nurse of Reading was a Rebecca Nurse descendant. Davis, Walter Goodwin, Massachusetts & Maine Families in the Ancestry of Walter Goodwin Davis (1996) Vol. 3, p. 73. Francis Nurse b. Jan. 3, 1688; m. Jan. 2, 1716/7, Martha Hartshorn; d. May 15, 1733. The widow Martha Nurse m. secondly Feb. 24, 1735, Edward Putnam of Middleton. This Francis was the son of Francis and Sarah (I never can remember whether she's Tarbell or Craggin; Goodwin says Tarbell) Nurse and thus he was a grandson of Rebecca Nurse who was executed in 1692. While researching my possible connection through the Pease family this evening, I realized that I also have a probably descent through Samuel and Ruth (Trumbull) Perley who were the complainants and witnesses in the case against Elizabeth Howe for bewitching their daughter, Hannah. That gives me Rebecca Nurse, John Harwood, Henry Kinne, Samuel & Ruth Perley, and Robert and Sarah Pease, none of which can I prove with certainty... probably because their grandchildren left Salem Village to pioneer other settlements, especially Sutton, MA where the initial keeping of records left something to be desired. It is interesting that Bass, Hist of Braintree VT states of my ancestor Samuel Harwood who was not born until 1743 that he was accused of being a witch "before the Salem witchcraft episode had completely died out" and that he threatened the woman who accused him with a fireplace poker to take back her accusation. It was this statement that originally prompted my interest in the Salem witchcraft trials and of course, I soon realized that Samuel was born way too late to have any connection to the the Salem episode. But, it is said that there is usually a grain of truth in family lore and this grain has lead me to discover the probable descent of Samuel's wife, Lydia Kenney from Rebecca Nurse. Edward Putnam Jr's third wife, whom he married in 1736/37, was "Martha Nurse widow of Francis Nurse of Reading" (from Eben Putnam's book). I sometimes wonder if Francis Nurse of Reading was related to Rebecca Nurse of Salem Village. I think I have a descent from Sarah & Robert Pease (or at least from his parents.) I can't remember how they were involved in the trials. Please expand upon the Pease connection to the trials. I'd be interested in "mergers" between descendants of accusers and descendants of accused and how long it took. In my line, Rebecca Nurse (grand-daughter of accused Rebecca Nurse) married Jonathan Kinne (grandson of accuser Henry Kinne) at Sutton, MA. And, their grand-daughter, Lydia Kenney m. Samuel Harwood (probably a descendant of Goodman Harwood who twice appeared as an apparition to accuse Rebecca Nurse of causing his death, and possibly a descendant of Pease mentioned above.) Bea, Is your Samuel Elwell related to Thomas Elwell who married Sarah Bassett, the daughter of William Bassett and Sarah Burt? William and Sarah Burt Bassett had William Bassett who married Sarah Hood. Sarah Hood Bassett was also accused of being a witch. William and Sarah Burt Bassett also had Elizabeth who married John Proctor and was in prison. She was not killed because she was pregnant.
