    2. Greetings all, I have been having difficulty finding information of my line from Edward and Sarah. It is supposed to go through their son Edward and his son David, but I have not been able to find birth and marriage dates for some of these people. Where might I find well documented information on them??? 3. My line from Joseph HOULTON & Sarah INGERSOLL is Benjamin HOULTON (sr.) (1657/8-1689) m Sarah HOLTON (parents??) Benjamin HOULTON (jr.) (1689/90-1745) m. Lydia LEACH (1689/90-bef.1736) Ruth HOULTON (1712/3-1794) m. Abraham GOODALE (jr.) (1712-1794) - I have both Ruth & Abraham d. 4 Apr 1794 ... don't know if they died tog. or 1 is a mistake! Interestingly enough, both the daughter (Eunice GOODALE) & granddaughter (Ruth GOODALE) of Abraham GOODALE, jr. & Ruth HOULTON married into the FULLER family: Eunice GOODALE (1755-1836) m. Timothy FULLER (jr.) (1753-1837) Ruth GOODALE (d/o Eleazer GOODALE & Sarah SWINERTON) m Daniel FULLER (1789-1860), her 1st cous. The reason I say this is interesting context of your email is that Timothy FULLER (jr.) who m. Eunice GOODALE was the grandson of Thomas FULLER (1671-1753) & Elizabeth BUXTON (bap 1670) --- Elizabeth BUXTON was the daughter of John BUXTON (c.1643-1715) & his first wife, Mary SMALL (d. 1675/6); I believe this is "your" John BUXTON who m. (2) 7 Oct 1677 to Elizabeth HOULTON (d/o Joseph HOULTON & Sarah INGERSOLL :) I guess that makes us doubly distant cousins :) Dori ----Original Message----- From: Deb_Piper <[email protected]> To: Steven P. 2. Hi Marc. I have for him: Richard Ingersoll was born Mar 16, 1586/87 in Epworth, Bedfordshire. He married in Sands, Bedfordshire, on Oct 16, 1615, Ann Langley. Richard and Ann Ingersoll came to Salem in 1629 with Higginson, arriving June 29. A letter from Matthew Craddock, governor of the company, to Mr Endicott commended "Richartd Inkersoll and Richard Howard" who with their familes came from Bedfordshire. In the original list of householders receiving "house lotts graunted by ye town" in 1638 he was givne two acres and also 80 acres on the Cape Ann side. He was later granted "30 acres of meadow in the greate meadow to be layd out by the town." In 1640 he is credited with nine persons and is given an allotment of one acre. The town record states that "It is agrees that Rich'd Inkersoll shall henceforth have one peny (a tyme to maintain the ferry) for every pson he doeth ferry over the north (ferry) river dureing the townes pleasure." He died in Salem on July 21, 1644. Their chidren born in Sutton, Bedfordshire were: 1.  Sarah Ingersoll Abt 1628 - 1719   +William Haines   *2nd Husband of Sarah Ingersoll:   +Joseph Houlton 2.  Alice Ingersoll 1612 -   +William Walcott 3.  George Ingersoll 1618 - Aft 1694   +Elizabeth ? - Bef 1694 4.  John Ingersoll 1623 - 1683   +Judith Felton 1621 - 5. *Joanna Ingersoll 1622 - 1692   +Richard Pettingill Abt 1621 - Their childrem born in Salem were: 6.  Nathaniel Ingersoll 1633 - 1719   +Hannah Collins 7.  *Bathsheba Ingersoll Bef 1629 - 1705   +John Knight, Jr Bef 1626 - 1677/78 Hope this helps. 1. [SALEM-WITCH-L] I would like to introduce myself
    2. Jody Roberts
    3. Greetings all... I would like to take time now to introduce myself to everyone... I am relatively new to the whole genealogy thing (I've only recently started researching in earnest), and would like to tell how it is I discovered my lineage was tied in to the Salem thing. My primary focus so far has been researching 'Twisdens' of the Marblehead area, but for some reason (which I was unaware of 'til recently) the relative who seemed to keep showing up was Sarah Nurse (m. Michael Bowden 12/15/1669). Sarah was the daughter of Rebecca Towne, of Salem infamy. I can trace myself back to Rebecca through the Bowden line right up to my great-grandmother. Bowden, Sr. and I do know that Gertrude Bowden was descended from two John Bowdens and Joshua O. Bowden (who was an officer in the army, he supposedly commanded the fort at Plymouth briefly during the War of 1812), thus, I determined through birthdates that this had to be who fit where. Of course, I *could* be wrong, I have not had a chance to talk to my great-uncle yet to take a look at the family bibles and all, but its a 99% definite of what I have here. The Bowdens still live in the Salem/Marblehead area as well. My grandmother was the first to *not* live in Massachusetts in her clan. Of course, if anyone has any corrections or whatnot for me, or wants to see what I have accumulated so far about Sarah Nurse's descendants, feel free to ask <g>. - Jody Roberts - -------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.user1.netcarrier.com/~jroberts ICQ UIN 1362302

    1. Re: [SALEM-WITCH-L] Fw: Mary Clements Osgood
    2. I am also related to Mary CLEMENT Osgood, and below is some of the information that I have on her ordeal. If you would like more, Barbara, I would be very happy to e-mail it to you. Hope that this helps. Joanne Robert Clements was twice licensed by the Norfolk County Court to sell wine in Hampton and Haverhill, a privilege in those days only extended to the better class of citizens. As marriage by a magistrate was the only legal form in the early days of the Massachusetts colonies, he doubtless performed many a ceremony besides that which united his daughter Mary to Capt. John Osgood of Andover. (She was also arrested for witchcraft Sept. 8, 1692 - see "Devil Discovered" by Enders Robinson - page 27, She also had a daughter named Constance (see page 333, same book) Mary, b. 1637, deposed in 1695, aged 58 years, m. John OSGOOD. (Mary was born in England in 1637, and died in Andover, MA Oct. 27, 1710. She married Nov. 15, 1653, in Haverhill, MA John Osgood, born in England in 1632, died Andover, MA Aug. 21, 1693, son of John and Sarah Osgood. (His parents; John Osgood, with his wife Sarah and son Job, came on the ship the "Confidence" in 1639. He was one of the first settlers of Andover; one of the founders of the church there and the first representative to the General Court from the town. In his will in 1658, he left the family homestead to his son John Osgood, Jr. and a bequest of Twenty shillings to his daughter, Sarah Clements. (p 38) When Robert Clements came to New England in 1642, Mary who was only five years old, was left in England, probably with relatives. Previous to 1652, she was living at Coventry with a Mrs. BIDDLE in Hay Lane. She must have joined her family in New England in 1652-3, as her marriage was in Nov. 1653, the ceremony being preformed by her father. John Osgood, Jr, husband of Mary Clement, was a man of prominence in Andover, MASS, For thirty years he was in military service, and in 1683 he was a Captain of a "troop of horse." His name always appears second in any list of public of church officers at Andover. He had a considerable estate in lands and was a man of future. Mary Clements is mentioned as "a remarkabley pious and good woman," and yet in 1692, she was accused of witchcraft. It is perhaps indicative of the height to which the witchcraft delusion rose that so prominent a woman could be found among the accused. Evidently the accusations were often caused by jealousy. It is quite probable that her commitment was signed by Dudley Bradstreet, her husband's friend.

    3. Dear Salem Witch Newsgroupers: I'm a folklorist at the Hazleton Campus of Penn State University who is doing research into adolescents' occult rituals for a book on "Satanism" (defined various different ways depending on the definers' agendas). One of my topics concerns rituals in which young females gaze into mirrors or other shiny objects under certain ritual conditions to catch a glimpse of their future husbands or a hint of their occupation. In Chadwick Hansen's book "Witchcraft at Salem" (1969), I find the following quote from Rev. John Hale: I fear some young persons, through a vain curiosity to know their future condition, have tampered with the Devil's tools so far that hereby one door was opened to Satan to play those pranks, Anno 1692. I knew one of the afflicted persons who (as I was credibly informed) did try with an egg and a glass to find her future husband's calling, till there came up a coffin, that is, a specter in likeness of a coffin. And she was afterwards followed with diabolical molestation to her death, and so died a single person--a just warning to others to take heed of handling the Devil's weapons lest they get a wound thereby. Another, I was called to pray with, being under sore fits and vexations of Satan. And upon examination I found that she had tried the same charm, and after her confession of it and manifestation of repentance for it, and our prayers to God for her, she was speedily released from those bonds of Satan (p. 30). Does anyone on this list know any more about this "egg and glass" charm as it was practiced at this time? I have an "egg and glass" account from Hazleton, Anno 1992, but I'm not sure this is the same ritual and would like to know if any other contemporary accounts exist. I linked my page to hers. She has all the relevant depostions and such. Neat Stuff! One of my big mysteries is what became of Samuel. Most sources say he left home right after the trial, never came home, and died two years later, 1694. HOWEVER, I found ship's papers issued to him in 1697 at Essex Institute. The probate records give his wife guardianship of the minor children that year, and there is another probate document that is apparently too fragile to look at until it is restored, so I don't know what that says. At any rate, Hannah remarried that same year. I envision him leaving home in disgrace after testifying, but where he went from there has me very curious. Abby

    3. Hello all! I have just learned that the 3-volume "The Salem Witchcraft Papers: Verbatim Transcripts of the Legal Documents of the Salem Witchcraft Outbreak of 1692," edited by Paul Boyer and Stephen Nissenbaum is now available on-line as eText! It's browsable and searchable (the search is a tad odd...), and it will help everyone who has not been able to locate this hard-to-find set of books: http://etext.virginia.edu/salem/witchcraft/texts/ This site also includes the eText of Burr's narratives of the trials, including the text of Cotton Mather's "Wonders of the Invisible World," Deodat Lawson's narrative, Thomas Brattle's letter, Robert Calef's "More Wonders of the Invisible World," and John Hale's "A Modest Inquiry into the Nature of Witchcraft." I am notifying all interested parties and writing a short testimony of support which I will share with you when done. I also plan to use your letter of support along with Craig Martin's to present to the Chairman of the House and the Judiciary Committee as a show of support for the Amendment Legislation. This is only the sixth step in this legislative process but its an important one so I will ask for your fervent prayers in this endeavor. 3. Hi Roni I have two database's showing Andover residents and those involved in the Salem incident. There are several Abbotts and Toothaker's listed but doesn't show a connection of the two families. I have the following info on Dr. Roger Toothaker. I am descended from Martha (Allen) Carrier. ************************************* On May 18th 1692, the conspiracy of accusers in Salem Village filed a complaint against Dr. Roger Toothaker. They charged him with afflicting, among others, Elizabeth Hubbard, servant of his rival, Dr. William Griggs of Salem Village. Dr. Toothaker was arrested and sent to Boston Prison. On May 28th the Salem Village conspiracy filed a complaint against his wife,Mary (Allen) Toothaker, his young daughter Margaret Toothaker, and his sister-in-law, Martha (Allen) Carrier of Andover. On May 31st they were arrested and imprisoned in Salem. On July 23d 1692, Mary's daughter Martha (Toothaker) Emerson was accused and arrested. Mary Toothaker now a widow made a confession before the Magistrates at Salem. Mary confessed to having made a covenant with the Devil in the past May for protection from the Indians. About a week later, on August 1st 1692, the Indians attacked Billerica and at least six persons were slain. The Indians returned a few days later and burned down the deserted Toothaker farm. On August 5th 1692, Mary's sister Martha (Allen) Carrier was condemned by the Court of Oyer and Terminer, and on August 19th she was hanged at Salem. On February 1st 1693, at the Superior Court of Judicature at Charlestown for Middlesex County, Mary Toothaker was found not guilty in a trial by jury. Her daughter Margaret was also released. In 1695 the Indians raided Billerica. They killed widow Mary (Allen) Toothaker and carried off Margaret, now 12,who was never heard of again.92 Roni McFadden wrote: > Hello, > I'm new to the list, as well to the history of the trials, etc. I've > discovered the name Toothaker in my line from Andover.
