    1. [SALEM-WITCH-L] Salem -- and more! :D
    2. Margo Burns
    3. Hi all! A quick note from your list-keeper: I just wanted to say that I've been very pleased to read the recent posts about witchcraft accusations and trials in parts of Massachusetts other than Salem and about the lesser-known "outbreak" in Connecticut, despite the fact that "Salem" is in the list's name. I have edited the welcome message to include this as within the scope I intended for this list, and those posts are most welcome. I hope people interested in those cases find community here. Additionally, I want to make sure that everyone knows that while the list apparently seems to be more for descendants of the trials, which is why I chose to have Rootsweb host it, no one with a sincere interest in these people and events should feel like they are on the list under "false pretenses," okay? Besides, how often can we genealogists actually find people who will not only stay awake while we discuss our own ancestors, but are actually *interested* in them!? ;D I've updated the information page about this list accordingly, so I'll take this opportunity to urge you all to bookmark it for future reference, since it contains basic information about the list, subscribing, posting, searching the archives, and yes, even unsubscribing: http://www.ogram.org/17thc/salem-witch-list.shtml Cheers, Margo Margo Burns, List Owner of the SALEM-WITCH List at Rootsweb.com [email protected]

I know this includes more than Salem, but year and locale are listed, so it is possible to sort them out. I do not know if this list is definitive, but it's a good start! :D For more information about any of these people, please refer to those two sources. The Boyer & Nissenbaum contains only the people accused in Salem, and is fortunately available in searchable form on-line at http://etext.virginia.edu/salem/witchcraft/texts/ . 1. [SALEM-WITCH-L] Bishop/Symonds
    2. Stephanie Walker
    3. OK here we go. In my database I have an Edward Bishop who had 2 children who both married Symonds in the 1700's. All were from Topsfield. What is interesting is that these Symonds were descendants of the Symonds family who were connected to the Towne family by marriage to Jacob Towne brother of Rebecca, Mary and Sarah Towne - all accused witches. Other members of the Symonds family married into the Towne family as well. Members of the Wildes families also married into the Towne family. Sounds like one hotbed of intermarriages among the 'witchcraft' families! 2. harold l fitzmeyer
    3. Charlie, I am researching Winifred King wife of Joseph Benham who was accused of witchcraft in 1692 & 1694 in CT. She, originally from Boston, was accused twice and acquitted both times. The second time her 13 year old daughter Winifred was also accused. They fled to Staten Island where other children were living. I have the court transcripts from New Haven, CT. Do you have this Winifred in your King genealogy? I am trying to prove her parents. There was a Mary Hale in Boston who ran a boarding house/hospital who was also accused of witchcraft. This I think was Winifred's mother as they referred to Winifred as the "daughter of the previously accused boarding house witch" of Boston. Linda M. Fitzmeyer

    1. [SALEM-WITCH-L] who was arrested
    2. Does anyone have a list of everyone who was arrested as witches in 1692 regardless of what later happened to them. From what I understand 200 people were arrested and until Oct. everyone tried was convicted whether they were later hung or not. Some of these people spent up to a year in jail. If you know where the list is please let me know. Thanks in advance for helping, I seem to be related to a lot of these poor people and I want to know how many more. Carol in Reno

    2. Charles, There is quite a bit of information about the Jacobs clan. There is a list of George Jacobs, Sr.'s property seized by Sheriff George Corwin. I read what you had on your website. Your website stated that Rebecca, wife of George Jacobs, Jr., with her husband. According to Robinson's book, she was imprisoned and remained in prison for 11 months. She was supposedly "not right in the head" or "crazed," and had been for about 12 years before her imprisonment. A two-year old daughter had died of drowning, for which she blamed herself. Robinson's book states that the Jacobs family was an important target for the "conspiracy." They had ties to the Porter family, and were very involved in the affairs of Salem Town. The book has information on George Jacobs, Sr., George Jacobs, Jr., Margaret Jacobs, Daniel Andrew (brother to Rebecca, wife of George, Jr., Rebecca (Andrew) Frost Jacobs, and Sarah Churchill (servant and accuser of George, Sr.). If you would like to send me your snail mail address privately, I would be happy to send you copies of the pages that pertain to the Jacobs family. 3. > Could > there be any possibility that you have traced any of your Jones family to > this area? Hi Scarlett, My Jones family became Quakers as I think several of the Salem witch families did--distancing themselves from the Puritans no doubt. They pretty much lived around Salem (Amesbury/Salisbury MA). My latest Jones ancestor Lydia moved with her husband Benjamin Hoag from Amesbury to the Quaker meeting at Oblong NY in 1758. She only had one brother John Jones and he married Hannah Dow (the Dows were another big Quaker family). Of course your ggrandfather could have descended from any of the males of previous generations in this family. From then on this branch of my family followed a Quaker migration pattern to Michigan and then to Whittier CA. If your Jones line were Quakers or came from MA then the liklihood that we are cousins would increase. Have you written away for yr ggrandfather's birth or death certificate yet? Those would give the names of his parents. Your next best bet is the census. Also there is a Jones surname list on the web. I can give you further details if u aren't already on it. Good luck with your huntin' Lesllie P.S. If u are named after an ancestor's surname, the Scarletts were another Quaker family that intermarried with my family in our migration pattern and a lot of these families did migrate together. Sorry I can't be of more specific help. ******************* Hi, just read your message on the net about the Jones family in Salem. I am a descendant of Jones'. Needless to say with that name we are having a very difficult time tracing backwards. This name was Thomas J. Jones (not sure about the middle initial). Supposedly born in Alabama. He was raised in and around what is now Howard County, Arkansas. He died in Garland County, Arkansas and is buried in the Fleming Cemetery, just West of Hot Springs, Arkansas on U.S.270 West. He died in the earlier part of the 1900's. Could there be any possibility that you have traced any of your Jones family to this area? If so, please advise. Thanking you in advance for taking the time to read this. Scarlett G. Fleming-Donahue. P.S. Thomas Jones was my Greatgrandfather, maternal side.

    3. > After Ursula's death, Susannah and her sister Mary were effectively > disinherited. Robinson obviously did not effectively research all of the > information in his book, but only that information central to his thesis. Kathy, . I am a descendant of George Martin through Susannah's step-daughter Hannah Martin. Hannah's grandaughter was my ancestor Lydia JONES. Her father was John Jones b 1678. His father was Joseph Jones b 1664. His father was Thomas Jones. Is this the same Thomas Jones b. 1615 who married Mary North? I see they have a son named Thomas Jones b. 1640 so it would more likely be the son I'm looking for not the father. Do you have the genealogy of the descendants of Mary North Jones and Thomas Jones, specifically their son Thomas? I'm just missing that one little link so if you or anyone on the list has it I would be most grateful. Leslie

    2. To the List: A few days ago, there was some conversation about the movie "Three Sovereigns for Sarah" and where it could be obtained at what price. My sister just returned from a visit to Salem and she found the video there at the visitors center. The price was $34.95 plus tax. Much cheaper than some of the other sources, including PBS. 1. Re: [SALEM-WITCH-L] Genealogies
    2. Leslie and Carole, The question that Leslie posted prompted my memory. I have a copy of an article that was published in two parts in _The American Genealogist_. They were written by David L. Greene, PH. D., F.A.S.G. Part one was published in the October 1982 issue and part two was published in the January 1983 issue. It is listed in the table of contents as "Salem Witches III: Susanna Martin." The article contained quite a lot of genealogical information. I have not seen the preceding articles, but they were presumably about two other persons who were Salem victims. I don't know how many articles followed "Salem Witches III." My mother had made copies of the article in the genealogy section of the Thousand Oaks Public Library. Carole, I'm certain that an enterprising person could locate these volumes at a public library, genealogy library, family history center, etc. They contain a wealth of genealogical information. One could also obtain a current issued of this magazine (I'm assuming it is still being published) and see if it tells you how to obtain back issues. For Leslie, one of the sources for the article on Susanna is the following book. In a footnote the author cites this a reference for information on the children of Hannah Martin Wathen or Worthen. _The old families of Salisbury and Amesbury, Massachusetts_ : a reprinting of the author's full set of genealogical journals, 1897-1919 David Webster Hoyt _The old families of Salisbury and Amesbury, Massachusetts_ : with some related families of Newbury, Haverhill, Ipswich, and Hampton, and of York County, Maine David Webster Hoyt I found the above listings on Amazon.com. They are listed as out of print. Cheers, Kathy Smith

    3. Hi. I don't know of any one book that will "untangle" their genealogies. I really don't think they are any more "tangled" than any families for that time. The towns were small and the families were large. I have been doing my genealogy, and that of my husband, for over thirty years, mostly in Essex County, MA. I have found that ANY event affected many of my ancestors, either directly or indirectly. The Witchcraft and the Indian Raids probably are the best known, but the "Putrid Sore Throat" that decimated all the children in entire families, and many other events, could be considered "tangled genealogies". The more one does genealogy, the more one realizes that the early families were nearly all related within a few generations. The moving patterns caused entire families to move to a new place, often accompanied by one or two other families. Their children married and inter-married. The more I study the Salem (and other) Witchcraft personnel, the more I can connect them to each other. I don't consider this unusual. Amy [email protected]

    1. Re: [SALEM-WITCH-L] Genealogies
    2. Carole, I have a book, entitled _The Devil Discovered_ by Enders A. Robinson. It has a few genealogical charts. Robinson's take on the events in Salem in 1692, is that they were the result of a power struggle between the Putnam and Porter families and Salem Village vs. Salem Town. He displays a few charts to illustrate the relationships of some of the principle characters on both sides of the struggle. For persons not central to his thesis, the information is less solid. For example, he states that the parents of my ancestor, Susannah (North) Martin, are Richard and Ursula North. In fact, Ursula was Susannah's stepmother. The Martin's were involved in a lengthy legal battle over Richard North's estate. After Ursula's death, Susannah and her sister Mary were effectively disinherited. Robinson obviously did not effectively research all of the information in his book, but only that information central to his thesis. I know that there are books that have more genealogical information. A few years ago I was doing a history research paper on two of my ancestors, Susannah Martin and Mary Bradbury. I checked out every book that my local library had on Salem, and obtained many more via interlibrary loan. I remember seeing some with genealogical information, however I quickly discarded books that did not have information that pertained directly to my research. Regards, Kathy Smith

    3. Thanks to Benjamin, who sent me the following url for the Salem Witchcraft Papers, which are on line and fully searchable. The passage that I wanted to know if it was part of Hale's document or the author of the book it came from inserted it turned o9ut to be part of Hale's document. So I guess the Raymonds et al did make that testimony. From Balch and Raymond genealogies, William Raymond Jr alone testified, and he was "one of the less deluded ones". I wonder what would be more or less deluded? I had thought it was William Raymond Jr who testified about the fit at Dr. Griggs' house, but that turns out to be his brother in law, James Kettel. I notice that Abigail Walden signed the testimony about the fight between Sarah and Edward Bishop on the Ipswich Road along with Elizabeth (Woodbury) Balch. Elizabeth Woodbury had a sister named Abigail who was with her when they witnessed that fight - I guess now we know who she married! Yours, Dora - You'll find John Hale's deposition containing the passage you quoted below in the online version of the Salem Witchcraft Papers, p. 97. Just go to the Web site <http://etext.virginia.edu/salem/witchcraft> and find the link to the Salem Witchcraft Papers. Open that link and scroll down to the link called "search the Verbatim Transcripts." Open that link to the SWP search engine. Use only the top window on that page, and enter into the window any name or word you want to find. Put a "space" after the last letter of the word or name you enter. Then scroll down to the bottom of that page and click on the "submit query" button. This will give you a list of all the witchcraft cases containing the name/word you want, with the word in red color, surrounded by a few words on eather side. Click on one of the links that names the case containing your word/name, e.g., Bridget Bishop, and this will open up the text containing your name/word. To get the full text of the document. click on the "sub-section" link at the top of the page. Benjamin C. I have visited the Danvers Archive site and have looked at the info there. I find it leaving me with more questions than answers. It is my understanding that these women were released and possibly acquitted but not much else. Timothy Day's wife was Pheobe Wildes (Wilder, Wilde). Hugh Rowe's wife was Rachel Langdon (Varney, Vinson). It appears she had several marriages. Any help here would be appreciated. I have several others that are affiliated but we can start here and move onwards after I sort these out. Possible other connections are the Johnson and Fuller lines. Roberta Andersen Portland, OR
