    1. [SALEM-WITCH-L] Clarification re: Whittier / Susannah North Martin "link"
    2. by way of Margo Burns
    3. Hi Leslie, I wrote to Frank Shaw about the webpage you mentioned and he kindly replied with the link. It is not a direct one and Whittier is not a "descendant" of Susannah North Martin as the webpage states, but connected to her via her marriage, apparently. Thanks for your help, Wendy ----- Original Message ----- From: Leslie Hope <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Cc: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, August 11, 1999 12:27 AM Subject: Re: [SALEM-WITCH-L] Who did John Wilde turn in > Wendy, > I don't have Whittier's line, sorry. 1. [SALEM-WITCH-L] Unsubscribing
    2. Margo Burns
    3. Hi all! Summer is a hard time to be subscribed to multiple lists when you may be going on vacation without access to your e-mail (well, some: I'm overlooking Cape Cod Bay as I type this... :D ), unable to weed through everything as usual on a regular basis, and you could have a major overflow to deal with when you return, so unsubscribing for a while is an option. Since we've had two people in the past day try to unsubscribe (unsuccessfully) by sending the word "remove" to everyone on the list, I thought I'd take the opportunity to repeat the correct instructions so that no one mistakenly thinks that's the correct way to do it: 1. To unsubscribe from regular mail mode, send a message to: [email protected] which contains only the following word in the body of the message: unsubscribe 2. To unsubscribe from digest mode, send a message to: [email protected] which contains only the following word in the body of the message: unsubscribe If you have any trouble unsubscribing drop me a note directly and tell me so, and I can do it manually very easily from my end. Cheers from the Cape (it's overcast today, if that helps...), Margo Margo Burns, List Owner of the SALEM-WITCH List at Rootsweb.com [email protected]

    2. Jody Roberts
    3. I was having a discussion at work with someone, and a question came up between us that neither of us knew the answer to, but I'm surew someone on this list might... What was the last 'official' trial concerning an accusation of witchcraft in the United States? Would anyone know? I have a bet going with my coworker that it happened within the 20th century, she thinks not... Any help would be appreciated! -Jody Roberts

    1. [SALEM-WITCH-L] Re: SALEM-WITCH-D Digest V99 #99 - Gould connection?
    2. Hello, I am interested in the discussion of the Gould line as my 4th great grandfather, John Estey, married one Abigail Gould in Sharon, MA 8 Dec. 1762. John is a great grandson of Isaac and Mary Towne Esty. His grandfather, Joseph along with Joseph's brother Benjamin, moved to Dorchester (now Stoughton) ca 1705. I have Abigail's birth as 1741 and death as 25 Sept. 1816 but no further Gould information. My question is, did any of the Topsfield Gould's migrate to the Dorchester area and does anyone have any information about Abigail and her Gould line? 3. I descend from Capt. john GOULD, brother of Priscilla. The story I have is that Capt john's wife defamed a Thomas Gilbert for drinking to much wine at their worship service & when in court Capt John stood up & begged Thomas Gilbert to stop speaking. I also have notes from GOULD research that states the GOULD family had no part of the Salem Witch Trials. I believe Priscilla's line is related to Winston Churchill BTW. 1. Re: [SALEM-WITCH-L] Re: On-line ed of Salem Witch Papers (Raymond, Herrick, etc.)
    2. Leslie Hope
    3. Dora, I have several. Most were from Salisbury/Amesbury. They were converts to the Society of Friends after the witch trials to the best of my knowledge, Most of the families I think emigrated from England as Purtitans or Presbyterians more or less. Of course there is my Hoag/Emery line from Newbury. Then there is Jones. Lydia Jones was a Quaker when she married into this family and her lineage goes back to George Martin (her step-ggmother was Susannah Martin who raised her grandmother from a toddler) Her mother was Susannah Fowler. Her father was John Jones who has Osgood and Gould in his line. Then I have Elizabeth Palmer a generation after Lydia Jones. Her family were Quakers by way of New York and Connecticut and she has more Fowler and Hunt in her lineage. I haven't hooked hers up to the Salem area yet but they sure are familiar names in that neck 0' the woods. Then further on in the migration I have Phebe Rayman (Raymond?). I haven't hooked her up yet either but I think I know where to start looking. Oh yeah, there's Mercy Baker a generation before Phebe. Haven't hooked her up yet either but I quote from some information that was handed down to me from a great aunt who did her research in those bad ol' days before the internet: David Baker was born in Mass....he was a son of Moses and Cynthia Baker who were native of Mass and who traced their ancestry back to 3 brothers named Baker who came to America early in 1600 from England. (Maybe u or someone else can help me with this one.) All the information I have about these people is from Quaker records. I'm still working on some of this obviously but I'm beginning to see a trend. And I do know for a fact that the three Hoag brothers, Joseph, Jonathan and my Benjamin were converts to the Society of Friends and since two of them married Goodwin girls that would mean that there are Goodwin descendants who were Quakers as well. Sewall was a hangin' judge if I'm not mistaken. >> Leslie, I don't know about Noyes, but I understand that Sewall did eventually repent bitterly his part in the Salem witchcraft trials. He was reported to observe a day of fast and mourning every year for the rest of his life. Whittier wrote a poem about it, titled, "The Prophesy of Samuel Sewall." An excerpt: Touching and sad, a tale is told, Like a penitent hymn of the Psalmist old, Of the fast which the good man lifelong kept, With a haunting sorrow that never slept, As the circling year brought round the time Of an error that left the sting of crime, When he sat on the bench of the witchcraft courts, With the laws of Moses and Hale's reports, And spake in the name of both the word That gave the witch's neck to the cord, And piled the oaken planks that pressed The feeble life from the warlock's breast! All the day long from dawn to dawn, His door was bolted, his curtain drawn; No foot on his silent threshold trod, No eye looked on him save that of God, As he baffled the ghosts of the dead with charms Of penitent tears, and prayers, and psalms, And, with precious proofs from the sacred word Of the boundless pity and love of the Lord, His faith confirmed and his trust renewed That the sin of his ignorance, sorely rued, Might be washed away in the mingled flood Of his human sorrow and Christ's dear blood! My family was not Quaker, but I was born in Whittier, CA. Small world! Regards, Kathy
