    1. [SALEM-WITCH-L] RE; Mary Warren/Sarah Warren Osborne Prince
    2. John Putman m. Rebecca Prince. I am decended from this line. I don't have record of Rebecca's father, but if she was the sister of Thomas Prince, this would also explain why John Putman is listed as an in-law of Thomas Prince. Does anyone have any info on the Prince line? Thanks, Susan

    1. [SALEM-WITCH-L] Smith family

    3. I am interested in learning more about the descendants of Robert Smith who appear in western NY state in the the early 1800's and beyond. They were connected with Joseph Smith the Mormon prophet. Does anyone have any information on those lines? I have Smith's in Livingston Co., NY that I think may be related. Generation No. 1 1. ROBERT1 SMITH1 was born 1626 in Boston, Lincolnshire, England - or 16232, and died August 30, 1693 in (Rowley) Boxford, Essex Co., Massachusetts3. He married MARY FRENCH4 16565, daughter of THOMAS FRENCH and MARY SCUDAMORE. 1661; Living in the part of Rowley that later became Boxford. Probably the Robert Smith of Ipswich whose daughter Mary was b. in that town 10/28/1658. >From The Refiner's Fire The Making of Mormon Cosmology, 1644 - 1844, by John L. Brooke "Robert Smith arrived in Boston in 1638, just months after Anne Hutchinson's banishment to Rhode Island. Only twelve years old, Robert had had no mature encounter with Laudian persecution or English Puritanism. Without a family other than a brother, who soon disappeared, his early exposure to Puritanism in New England came through the filter of either indentured servitude or an apprenticeship. After working as a tailor in Boston for some years, he married Mary French of Ipswich in the mid 1650's and established himself in Boxford in 1661. Mary was a member of the Topsfield church by 1684, but Robert Smith never joined the church. By 1693, when he had his will drawn up as he lay dying, Robert Smith enjoyed substantial yeoman circumstances, leaving three hundred acres to three of his sons. His son Samuel, Joseph Smith's great-great grandfather, would move to neighboring Topsfield in 1693, where the faamily would remain for almost a century, before emigrating during the revolutionary years to New Hampshire and Vermont, and after the Cold Summer of 1816 to Palmyra in the Burned-over District of central New York. Two episodes dramatically set off the story of the Smiths in Essex Co. In the spring of 1692, at the height of the Salem witchcraft trials, Samuel Smith testified to the occult powers of his aunt by marriage, Mary Easty, one of the three daughters of William Towne of Topsfield who were accused of witchcraft in 1692. On the evidence of Samuel Smith, Margaret Reddington, and several of the "afflicted girls", Mary Towne Easty was hanged on 9/22/1692. A century later in 1796, Samuel's grandson Asael Smith wrote a warm and friendly letter from Tunbridge, Vermont to Jacob Towne, Jr. in Topsfield, a great-great-great nephew of Mary Easty, thanking him "with joy and gratitude" for a recent letter and sending his regards to Jacob's parents. A long saga of community turmoil and reconciliation stood between these two events. The Smiths and the Townes had been on very intimate terms during the 1680's. Though the Smiths lived in Boxford, miles from the Townes in south Topsfield, all three marriages among Robert Smith's children in the 1680's were with members of the Towne family. But these cordial relations were shattered in 1692 when Samuel Smith of Boxford appeared at the Salem court and testified at the trial of Mary Easty, the aunt of three of his brothers in law. One night five years previously Smith had been "to Rude in discorse" at the Easty house, probably at the wedding supper for his sister Amy, and Mary Easty had warned him he "might Rue it hereafter". Riding past a stone wall later that night he had "Received a little blow to my shoulder with I know not what and the stone wall rattled very much which affrighted me my horse was also affrighted vry much but I cannot give the reson of it."... It goes on to discuss a rift in the Towne - Smith relationships after this and then "..."A family of artisans, the Smiths were exposed to the language and culture of the metallurgical tradition in their connections with these ironworking families (The Goulds)...In the decades following the Great Awakening, the Smiths would turn back to the network of the Towne family...the younger Smiths began to associate with families within the Towne orbit. Two marriages between Smiths and Townes in 1760 mark the end of the feud. The new Smith-Towne relationship seems to have been rooted in bonds forged in service in the provincial troops during the French and Indian War. In 1757 and 1758 Samuel III served as a corporal in a company at Lake George (NY) that included two brothers of his future bride. One of these Towne brothers would be killed in action and the other severely wounded in a failed assault on Ticonderoga; he was saved from scalping only because a friend pulled a felled tree over him before joining the retreat. Corporal Samuel Smith III married the wounded man's sister Rebecca at the close of the war in 1760. The new Smith -Towne friendship may explain how Samuel's brother Asael learned the cooper's trade. Of the nine coopers in Topsfield known to have worked before Asael, eight were Townes or from families associated with the Townes... Most importantly, their new relationship with the Townes again brought the Smiths into contact with the metallurgical tradition. Several families among the Towne connection owned and worked a mine of copper bearing ore in south Topsfield, and here another connection with alchemy and the Renaissance occult tradition can be established... (some think this mine was where Sarah Towne Bridges Cloyes was hidden when she was taken from prison and hidden by her family as shown in the movie "Three Sovereigns for Sarah" - although that is merely tradition, and not proven) Both Asael Smith and his son Joseph, the father of Joseph the prophet, would have spent their formative years under the spell cast by these copper lands. Even if Asael had not learned coopering among the Towne orbit households of south Topsfield in the 1760's, he would have heard something of what was described in 1771 as "a certain shaft or Mine Hole which is commonly know by the name of Towne's Copper Mine". Asael's son Joseph, with his sons would make his living a half century later digging wells; the Smith family knowledge of underground workings may well have begun at this "Mine Hole" in south Topsfield" Children of ROBERT SMITH and MARY FRENCH are: i. 2. --part1_63db4cae.24e6eeec_boundary Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I have the book Currents of Malice by Persis W. McMillen. The following is on pp 186-187: "Sarah Good was strong in her own defene, asserting her own innocence. But she was quick enough to pin the blame on the woman who was brought before the bar next. This was Sarah Osborne. "Sarah Osborne was, too, in a sense, a deviant citizen of Salem Village. Her first husband, Thomas Prince, had died in 1674, leaving his land to his wife in trust for their two small sons, and naming as his executors, Thomas and John Putnam, his in-laws and neighbors. Soon after Prince's death, his widow brought into the village a hired hand. His name was Alexander Osborne, and his indenture was purchased for fifteen pounds. The possible fornication between the two before their marriage undoubtedly made her more vulnerable to village opprobrium. After the marriage however, they began to maneuver to gain full control of her late husband's lands, at the expense of her two sons, and in direct defiance of Thomas Prince's will. " Such doings did not suit the Villagers' sense of propriety at all. Established patterns of land tenure and inheritance were threatened. Added to this was the fact brought out in her first examination that she had not been at a church meeting for a year and two months." If this documentation is correct, Sarah, who m. 1st Thomas Prince and 2nd Alexander Osborne, was a Putnam. This references Thomas and John Putnam as executors and in-laws of Thomas Prince, Sarah's first husband. In the book, Genealogies of the Families and Descendants of the Early Settlers of Watertown, Massachusetts by Henry Bond, M.D., p. 620, the only Mary Warren who is close in age to "Mary Warren, age 20, maid of John Proctor" in Salem is Mary Warren, b. 25 May 1675 to John Warren and Michael (Jennison) Bloys, wd of Richard Bloys. This would make her age 17, not 20 in 1692. Mary m. 30 Dec 1698, Joseph Peirce. The LDS Ancestral File of ROBERT Prince and Sarah Warran (AFN:JWQL-R4) shows Sarah b. abt 1642, of Watertown, MA. The only Sarah Warren shown in the above Watertown reference is Sarah, b. 4 Jul 1658 to Daniel Warren and Mary Barron. It does not include a marriage for Sarah. The next Sarah Warren shown is Sarah, b. 25 jan 1670-1, sister of above Mary and dau. of John Warren and Michael Jennison. This Sarah is not mentioned in her father's will and no marriage is shown. 3. Here is the URl for what I have on Sarah Warren Prince Osborne. http://www.erols.com/jlathrop/prince.html Here are links to pages devoted to John Warren of Watertown. http://www.geocities.com/~robertckline/HTML/g0000620.html#I1280 http://sml.simplenet.com/smlawson/bigelow.htm#Warren Note the Sarah Warren there died in infancy in England. Elizabeth Warren Knapp's daughter Elizabeth Knapp was the affected child in the witchcraft case in Groton in 1671. Here is a link about that case: http://history.hanover.edu/texts/groton/grointro.htm My impression of this case is that the girl might have suffered from Turrets Syndrome. A Psychiatric disorder characterized by involuntary twitches and outrageous outbursts. Note if Sarah Warren Prince Osborne was the daughter of John and Margaret Warren then Elizabeth Knapp would be her niece. Another Sarah Warren Prince Osborne descendant, Marlene Jolly sent me an email indicating that Richard Trask, the Salem Archivist, had told her that Sarah was the daughter of John and Margaret Warren of Watertown. Reference was made to a book by "Putnam". That's all I have for now. 3. Please, Please! When you send/reply to an item on this newslist or any newslist, delete the majority of the original message with headings etc. Those of us on digest who would like to read the messages have to manuever through messages already read in a previous digest to get to the 'meat' of what is said in the new posts. When you don't delete extraneous information it is very time consuming to look for the new information, and creates extremely long list messages. Thanks! 3. I still have a few pages from Currents of Malice on Mary Warren, but not all that refer to her in the book. Mary had a father and sister living in 1692. According to testimony, an accused witch, killed her mother and struck her sister dumb(whatever that means)when Mary's father, for whatever reason, didn't plow the accused field for her. Mary's family does not appear on Boyer and Nissenbaum's Salem Village census in Salem Village Witchcraft: a Documentary Record so they must have lived in one of the outlying areas--Topsfield, Andover, Wenham, Watertown, or perhaps near the Proctor's where Mary was a servant. I think Sarah Warren Prince Osbourne was originally from Watertown and was the right age to be Mary's aunt so if Sarah and Mary's father were brother and sister, that would be the place to search, perhaps. I tried tracing Sarah on the FamilySearch Webbase at Salt Lake, but only got the family pedigree for her first husband Robert Prince. Perhaps looking up any 17th c Warrens in Watertown MA might be a start. So now I have confirmation that two of the afflicted girls, Mercy Lewis and Mary Warren weren't orphans and had some family, at least.

    3. Kathy, Thank you so much for informing me that my attempt to unsubscribe from this list has not worked. I'm really embarrassed about sending "what amounts to junk mail to the entire membership of this list!" To "you and the rest of the poor, unsuspecting list members that I provided a lot of grief," I'm sorry! I'm confident that the list owner Margo Burns and the others are grateful for your efforts to ensure the rest of us apply a little planning and consideration so the Internet will be a more pleasant experience for everyone! Thanks again, Paul p.s. I can't understand why you are getting a lot of these "remove" and "unsubscribe" messages lately! 3. My local library's copy is currently lost, but could someone on the list check Persis McMillan's "Currents of Malice: ...Mary Towne Esty and the Salem Witchcraft Hunts"--title is from memory but starts Currents of Malice on something for me According to the author, one of the "afflicted girls," Mary Warren, John Proctor's maidservant, had a father living in the Salem area(he had a run-in with a neighbor about not plowing a field for the neighbor)at the time of the witchcraft crisis. She also had a mother whom the author suggests may have been mentally ill and a sister with some sort of disability(possibly deaf I thought from my memory of what I read some time ago when my library's copy still existed. I do remember that the author said Mary Warren is the only one of the afflicted that there exists some idea of what she looked like from a contemporary quote from someone who attended at least a trial or hearing or saw her "I saw Mary Warren and another fair face" Boyer and Nissenbaum didn't list Mary Warren's family in their list of Salem Village inhabitants I don't recall in their "Salem Village Witchcraft : A Documentary Record" so her family lived elsewhere. A fiction novel I read years ago made Mary the niece of Sarah Warren Prince Osbourne, but lots of Warrens(and variant spellings thereof) existed in Massachusetts alone, so I don't know if the author got ahold of Sarah's family tree and located Mary's father as Sarah's brother or just figured two Warrens in the same neighborhood had to be related. I'm interested in tracking down the histories and families of the afflicted children--we know what happened to some--but as it used to be a mark of shame to have had an ancestor accused, convicted or hung for witchcraft and now is finally something to be proud of, so should descendents of there accusers(and those interested in them like myself)hunt what information we can down and maybe get a more complete story(or better add more questions and mysteries to the "case")on what made the Salem witchcraft outbreak so unique. I have some information gleaned from the Family Search Archives at Salt Lake City at their website on Mercy Lewis Allen(or Allan) if anyone is interested. Thanks loads

    3. > Whittier is not a "descendant" of > Susannah North Martin as the webpage states, but connected to her via her > marriage, apparently. Thanks for the clarification. Can you post the details? My guess is that if his grandmother was indeed a Green (and I don't know that for a "fact") he may have been descended from the same family as Hannah Green, George Martin's first wife. Susannah Martin raised his first wife's daughter along with the children of their marriage. It's amazing to me how inter-connected and inter-married all these Salem area families were and in the case of my line at least how they continued to intermarry down thru the generations even after they left MA. If anyone has information on the Greens I would like to know because I have none. Leslie
