    3. ** Clayes House on Framingham House Tour May 20 ------------------------------------------------------------ As a supporter of the Sarah and Peter Clayes House restoration, we wanted you to know that the house will be on the Framingham History Center’s House Tour on May 20^th. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to see the property before it goes on the market most likely at the end of June. The restoration will be nearly complete by May 20th allowing visitors an opportunity to see generations of paint in the oldest section of the house. Photos of before and during the work will illuminate the process of restoring the property along with narratives detailing architectural changes through the years. The photo on the house tour announcement below is not of the Clayes House but rather another stop along the tour. We hope you will come and see how far we have come thanks to your support while also visiting some other Framingham treasures. 3. Thanks so much for the heads up, Margo! On another note, has anyone on this list read Stacy Schiff's 2015 "The Witches?"  I've had it in my possession for a few months now and have only now had the chance to start reading.  I loved Schiff's book "Cleopatra" and was looking forward to this new one.  But I honestly couldn't get through the introductory chapter -- she seemed so glib and insistent on writing about the 17th century through 21st century eyes, which seemed off to me.  Then I read a few reviews and saw that the New York Times completely panned it -- for many of the reasons I had.  I wanted to find out other's opinions before committing to the time necessary to read the whole thing.  I've been doing a whole lot of research into the era as I consider writing a historical novel about Sarah Cloyce/Clayes, and I certainly have a whole library of other resources to get to! Any opinions would be much appreciated -- Janice ThompsonSarah Clayes House Trustsaraclayeshouse | | | | | | | | | | | saraclayeshouse | | | | On Wednesday, April 6, 2016 7:54 PM, Margo Burns via <salem-witch@rootsweb.com> wrote: “Who Do You Think You Are?” Sunday, April 10, 2016, at 9/8c on TLC (The Learning Channel) "In this week’s episode, Scott Foley is deeply patriotic but doesn’t know anything about his American roots. 1. [SALEM-WITCH] Parris-Sewall-Hull

    3. Does anyone know about when Betty Parris left the parsonage and stayed at Stephen Sewall's house? I looked at Marilynne Roach's day-by-day chronicle and couldn't find a timeframe, though it mentions Stephen was Betty's host (a not-indexed reference so I don't know page number). Frances Hill writes about Betty's stay there in her novel, Deliverance from Evil, too. Also, how is Samuel Parris related to the Sewalls? I think it was through the Hulls (Samuel's in-laws), but I don't know the family connection. 1. [SALEM-WITCH] poppets and dolls and charms
    2. Robin M via
    3. Maybe it's the full moon, Halloween, or too much chocolate, but I keep thinking of weird things in the middle of the night instead of sleeping. When I was in Salem two weeks ago, I saw a bunch of so-called poppets and some more correctly named voodoo dolls (in that they looked like voodoo dolls, not poppets) being sold in a bunch of shops. None looked like the simple white cloth ones that I envision, like the one at Corwin (aka Witch) House under the bell jar. (Go to Salem Witch House on Facebook to see photo.) Dow's Everyday Life in Massachusetts Bay Colony mentioned "in 1651 a farmer.Salem.shop owned by George Corwin.daybook [mentioned sale of].a doll" p. 42. Maybe a poppet was a homemade version of a doll, not the store-bought variety? Anyone been to Wenham Museum to see its doll collection? Any 17th century examples there? Two or three years ago, I visited the Corwin House in Salem. At the top of the stairs, in an alcove between the two rooms, there was a table display of what I'd call good luck charms/anti-curse charms that were found in the house during renovations---in the walls, by the fireplace, under the threshold, etc. Stuff like poppets, nails in jars, horseshoes, etc. Does anyone remember that display? And if yes, did you take a picture you could send me?! I didn't know how to turn off my flash at the time and was afraid to take a picture. Wish I did anyway! When my father renovated houses in NH, he found all sorts of cool stuff in the walls besides old-fashioned insulation (i.e., corn cobs, newspapers), like a little boy's cowboy boot, little metal toys, coins, etc. Good luck charms and house blessings have been around for centuries. So in the old Oliver/Bishop house, could the poppets have been a charm, say, for fertility or healthy children? Instead of something hidden away because of a voodoo-like meaning? -Robin M blog: <http://genealogyink.blogspot.com/> Genealogy Ink | <https://www.facebook.com/pages/Boston-Genealogy-Examiner/149502468313> BosGenEx on Facebook <http://njuniongenweb.com/> NJUnionGenWeb | <https://www.facebook.com/pages/Union-county-New-Jersey-USGenWeb-NJUnionGenW eb/184059304982258> NJ-Union on Facebook

    3. Thanks, Margo, for forwarding the excellent news!   Cheers -- Janice ThompsonThe Sarah Clayes House Trust On Friday, October 23, 2015 7:20 PM, Margo Burns via <salem-witch@rootsweb.com> wrote: Good news! Traverse declared the historic Sarah Clayes House “Sold!” After years of effort to preserve the 322-year-old “witch house” at 657 Salem End Road, Thompson’s group, the Sarah Clayes House Trust, at last had reason to celebrate. An on-site foreclosure auction Friday morning attracted three qualified bidders, but, in the end, mortgage holder Goldman Sachs, which had been an ally to the trust, exercised its right to take ownership of the dilapidated treasure. Thompson, who lives in Ashland, said she was “totally confident” the financial firm will now donate the vacant home to the trust. “We’ve been at this for over 10 years,” she said. “It really has sort of taken a village.” Sarah Clayes and her husband Peter built the home after fleeing from Salem, where she was convicted of witchcraft in 1692, during the Salem Witch Trials. Her proud descendents came out from Grafton, Boxford and beyond to watch the auction, hoping the trust could win the home away from developers who eyed it - and its acreage - as an investment. Town Meeting member and Zoning Board of Appeals Chairman Phil Ottaviani was one of the three bidders who qualified by bringing $10,000 in cash or a certified check. Ottaviani said he bid on the house at auction in the past but lost out to a higher bidder who was never able to make the purchase because of title complications. As for his plans for the property, “let’s see what happens,” he said. None of the three qualified bidders bit when Traverse asked for a $1 million opening bid. On behalf of Goldman Sachs, Traverse opened up bidding at $817,894, which none of the three wanted to touch. Thompson and a crowd of other preservationists and descendents of Clayes rejoiced when Traverse declared, “Sold! Back to the bank, $817,894.” Annie Murphy, a member of the trust and executive director of the Framingham History Center, called it an “incredibly exciting day” and culmination of a decade of effort. “It’s about the community coming together to save a treasure,” Murphy said. “Frankly I think a lot of people just sort of had given up and thrown up their hands.” Murphy credited Thompson and others for their perseverance in wanting to save the home, which is now vacant, boarded up and in deteriorated condition. Originally built in federal style in 1693, the house later grew through additions. Over the years the deed and ownership became tangled, and the last owner’s estate was in default on the mortgage, said Stephen Meltzer, an attorney for the trust. Murphy said the trust hopes to have a private homeowner come in and restore and protect the home. Architect Doug Stiles of The Stiles Co. in Weston, who works to restore antique homes, said he is working with the trust to draw up plans to renovate the Clayes House. “It’s going to be beautiful,” he said. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to SALEM-WITCH-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
