Hello. I am trying to locate Wilfred Heber Sainsbury who married Judith Eilene Baker. They have a grandson who is trying to find them. If anyone knows Wilfred and/or Judith, will you please ask them if they would like to communicate with their grandson and then email me privately with the answer. Thank you very much.
Ken Not trying to tell you how to suck eggs, but have you tried the Shipping records? The Archives in Kingswood have them. I am told that they go up to 1925 and one person even found the cabin number that her great grannie had had on the way out. Since it was a government scheme, there will be huge records or absolutely none. Les
Dear List, I have previously posted this inquiry on the LONDON mailing list. I apologise to those who have received it before. I am searching for information on my grandfather, Rex (Charley) SAINSBURY. Nobody in the family has any real firm evidence as to the origins of my Grandfather. He died 25 June 1935, Newcastle Australia. One family theory suggests he arrived in Australia on-board the "TORILLA" in 1911, aged eighteen, as part of a child migration scheme arranged by the Church of England, called the Church Army Lads Scheme. The facts we do have are:- Rex's marriage certificate states that he was born in London around 1892. An Australian employee record states his DOB as the 12 February 1892. His marriage certificate records his parents as William Charles SAULISBURY and Mary TIPPING. A possible birth certificate records his DOB as the 12 February 1893 (registration district West Ham, sub district Leyton in the county of Essex). Born at 5 Charlotte Terrace Esther Road, Leytonstone, father William SAINSBURY, mother Mary GIPPENS. Other family members tell me the 1891 Census records the following family living at 5 Charlotte Terrace Esther Road Leytonstone, the same address as recorded on his birth certificate; William 39 years 1852 Wiltshire father Mary 29 years 1862 Hertford mother Willie 7 years 1884 Nellie 6 years 1883 Mary 2 years 1889 London Annie 3 months 1891 The on-line 1901 Census shows the following family under the name of SANSBURY; Name Age Where born Admin Cnty Civil Parish Occupation William Sansbury 49 West Lavington Wilts London Battersea Builders Labourer Mary Sansbury 40 Stanton on Avon London Battersea William Sansbury 16 Battersea London London Battersea Signal Boy Railway Mary Sansbury 13 Battersea London London Battersea Scholar Annie Sansbury 10 Battersea London London Battersea Charles Sansbury 8 Legtonstone London Battersea Could they be the same family wrongly transcribed, could this Charles be our Grandfather? When tracing our grandfather's origins backwards we loose track of him and his movements when we think he arrived in Australia. I'm hoping we can identify his family origins and hopefully confirm that the birth certificate we have is indeed our grandfather's, and when he left England. I would be grateful for any information or clues that might help me identify my grandfathers origins. Ken Newcastle Australia
Jenni, Thanks for the information. I guess the Richard in the listing you gave me is a little too old to be the one I'm researching, but there is almost certainly a connection there. I would like to obtain copies or browse the Bridgwater parish registers, and will let you know when/if I do. I don't have any direct information, but the combination of clockmaker and Bridgewater is of interest to me. My ggg grandfather was John Saintsbury ( 1766 - 1822 ) who between 1804ish to 1822 lived in Cowcross London, and had a clock and watch toolmaker warehouse. His wife Ann (surname unknown but possibly DAVIS) was born in Bridgewater abt 1768. In spite of much research I have not yet found his origins or marriage. I noted in a listing from "West Country Watchmakers and Clockmakers" I found on the web a Richard Sainsbury 1765 Bridgwater. Do you have any siblings for this family? With thanks Jenni
Hello all, My earliest Sainsbury ancestor I'm aware of so far is one Richard Matthias Sainsbury, clockmaker, father of one Richard Percy Sainsbury, clockmaker, born ca 1809, Bridgwater, Somerset, and died 1856/1857 in Islington, London. Richard Percy married in London and is my 3G grandfather. I anyone has any further information, I'd be delighted to share. Regards, Tim Robb
I've extracted the Sainsbury entries (all 1,860 of them) from the Public Record Office's online index of the 1901 UK Census. They're available in an Excel file, which I've saved in a .zip file, at this location: http://webhome.idirect.com/~sainsbury/family_history.html Happy hunting! Looking for Sainsbury forebears in Taunton and Exeter areas. I am not familiar with parishes etc as have not been researching long. John (Eyre) Sainsbury b 1816 Taunton came to NZ in March 1868 with 4 sons and 1 daughter and second wife, Elizabeth. The children were to his first wife Harriet Ann(ie) Thorn of Bristol. (so I guess Gloucester is another area?) I have been unable to find date of her death. John's father was William Sainsbury b abt. 1791, Taunton and his mother Rebecca Eyre. Would be pleased to hear from anyone researching in those areas. Thanks - Joy
Hi, **This message is being sent to the SAINSBURY mailing list.** The email address that RootsWeb has for the SAINSBURY list admin stevepeace@look.ca is bouncing, so RootsWeb is looking to make contact with the list admin. The following transcription of "Sainsbury" deaths in the English Civil Registration indexes, from 1837 to 1843, may be helpful to Sainsbury researchers. If you are able to add to this list past 1843, please send me the data and I will include it. (I will also include births and/or marriages if anyone has transcribed these.) http://webhome.idirect.com/~stevepeace/SAINSBURY%20Death%20Index%201837-1843.htm Happy hunting! ************************************************** Mike Sainsbury and Steve Peace 1404 - 1960 Alberni Street Vancouver BC V6G 1B6 Canada (604) 685-6642 http://webhome.idirect.com/~stevepeace/ ***************************************************
I am researching in the UK and am interested in the variant of Saintsbury around 1760-1820 in London, but where was John Sainstbury before 1790? He was a merchant in London at Cow Cross street, ostensibly a Coal Merchant/ and or Watch and Clock tool maker. There may be a link with an Ambrose Saintsbury of Speen, Berks, who died before 1796 and whose Admon was granted to his son John Saintsbury. Jenni

Dear Mike, Best of luck with your administrator job, I know from my personal experience its hard work but very rewarding. I was looking through my Sainsbury family trees ,(Mostly from the county of Wiltshire) Documents, letters etc and noticed that my late grandfather has a small tree with the same names of Sainsbury that you are researching. But the dates and names are slightly different. His tree has the following :- John Sainsbury married Mary Chandler 19th July 1759 at Marden near Devizes in Wiltshire. their son was Richard Sainsbury baptisted 29th December 1759 age 4 years. Richard Sainsbury married Elizabeth ? of Puxton. Somerset, 1783 John their son born 1783 married Elizabeth ?, from Acton ? they had three sons and four daughters. The trouble with my Grandfathers Sainsbury's trees and documents is that he has not identified his source's of information and as such must be viewed with caution, but he was correct with a number of his family trees. Hi, I am looking for info on a Thomas Sainsbury who first shows up in Trinity, Newfoundland- as the father of a John Sainsbury. It is noted that he was a servant to Mr Street- a local merchant. The family-we think-later ends up in Greenspond, Bonavista Bay, Nfld. The family is well educated compared to the local population, and was not baptised- perhaps baptised elsewhere. Several are lay readers in the Anglican church. The story I have heard is that Thomas?? was the orphan of a Sainsbury who was killed in the Army-provision was made for him to relocate to Nfld. Any missing Thomas Sainsburys in your line?
