There is an article about Civil War veteran Horace Sackett at http://thedailyreview.com/news/paying-tribute-to-a-civil-war-veteran-1.1380850 . I couldn't find him in a quick look in the database. Anybody able to identify him? Chris
Quite the puzzler. I'll check the Chester/Blandford, Mass. records on Tuesday when I get back to work. Familysearch.org indicates that there is a Civil War pension file available for a relative, plus there are some Sacketts listed in Bradford County. --------------------------------- Ted Smith tcsmith@surewest.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cliff McCarthy" <camcca@charter.net> To: <sackett@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 01, 2012 6:47 AM Subject: Re: [SACKETT] Who was Civil War veteran Horace Sackett? > Quite the puzzler. Just for those who might care Civil War records are pretty much available to anyone from the National Archives who wants them - I copied a lot of them over the years - sicne thy are over 145 years old they don't have any restrictions. Now if you are going for newer ones like WW1 & WW2 that is different. Interesting that Ancestry didn't list it though usually they show the spouces, or I should say the person that puts in for the pension since it can be parents or children. Sackettm arried to Henriett. Sorry don't have more time too look now b ut will see if I see anything else on either one later. Chris, I checked my database and I believe I have a son of Horace and Elvira, William Spencer Sackett: http://sackettfamily.info/tekdatabase/g28/p28450.htm There is also a WorldConnect database that has more of the descendants of William Spencer SAckett: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=REG&db=chan83&id=I041343 This database has his parents as SACKETT and ___. Evidently, based upon the 1880 census, they have Spencer's father as born in Ohio. It will be interesting to see what Cliff may find in the Massachusetts records. The recent discussion relating to the identity of the parents of Horace Sackett, Civil War Soldier, who died in Bradford County, PA [http://thedailyreview.com/news/paying-tribute-to-a-civil-war-veteran-1.1380850 thedailyreview.com: With offices in Towanda, Sayre, and Troy Pa] ended with no decision. While updating the Find A Grave listings to include memorials created since Sept. 14, 2012; I believe I stumbled upon a solution to the problem. During the discussion I mentioned that William Spencer Sackett of Bradford Co., PA had reported in the 1880 census that his father was born in Ohio. That didn't agree with the information in the article about the headstone for Horace Sackett which said that he was born in Chester, MA. Doing a search for Horace Sackett born in Ohio, I found the following: 1860 > OHIO > ASHTABULA > KINGSVILLE Series: M653 Roll: 933 Page: 214 [Page No. 33]; 9 June, 1860 Post Office: Kingsville, Ohio 261/275 James Woodworth, 44, M, Lumber dealer, NY Mary A. Woodworth, 33, F, ---, Ohio Mary R. Woodworth, 18, F, House Work, Ohio Lydia A. Woodworth, 16, F, ---, Ohio James C. Woodworth, 14, M, ---, Ohio Martha C. Woodworth, 12, F, ---, Ohio Page 215 [Page No. 34] Harriet A. Woodworth, 9, F, ---, Ohio Charles Woodworth, 7, M, ---, Ohio William Woodworth, 3(?), M, ---, Ohio Caroline J. Woodworth, 1, F, ---, Ohio Sarah A. Sackett, 9, F, ---, Ohio Horace Sackett, 34, M, Teamster, Ohio Elvyra Sackett, 30, F, ---, NY Ruth R. Sackett, 10, F, ---, Ohio William W(?). Sackett, 7, M, ---, Penn [William Spencer] John L. Sackett, 5, M, ---, Penn This has Horace Sackett and his wife Elvira listed in the household of James Woodworth. The 4 Sackett children listed is the same number as the ones listed in the article: "Gary Sackett said that Horace Sackett had four children, and was married to his wife, Elvira. The children's names were John, Spencer, Ruth, and Elvira." The only child with a different name is Sarah A. which could be Sarah Alvira/Elvira, or, Sarah could have died and another daughter was born after the 1860 census. I couldn't make a connection for James Woodworth and his wife, Mary A. until I entered this FAG listing: Martha (Sackett) Woodworth Birth: 1818; Massachusetts, USA Death: 1854; Ashtabula County, Ohio, USA Burial: East Lake Cemetery, North Kingsville, Ashtabula County, Ohio, USA Daughter of Mark Sackett, d. 14 Feb 1853 and Sally Heald. Family links: Spouse: James Woodworth (1816 - 1900) Children: James Philander Woodworth (1845 - 1906) Note: Transcribed at http://www.conneautohio.us/eastlakecemindex_wxyz.htm. Martha Woodworth, w/o J_______, Located near Philander Woodworth, her father-in-law. Older stone, date is buried. Created by: Genealogy Liz Record added: Sep 22, 2012 Find A Grave Memorial# 97582316 According to the research submitted by Patty Sackett Chrisman; Martha Sackett married a James WOODRUFF. So, the cemetery records show that Martha married James WOODWORTH. In my database, Martha had a brother named Horace ! As can be seen in the FAG memorial, Martha died in 1854. By 1860, James Woodworth had remarried but Horace Sackett was still associated with him. James Woodworth was a lumber dealer and Horace was a teamster. This led me to take another look at notes I have for Mark Sackett. Information supplied by Mary Lou Sackett: LDS microlfilm no. 0760649, 175, Intention of marriage between Mr. Mark Sackett and Miss Polly Herrick both of Norwich entered by me March 17th, 1810. Samll Wright, T. clerk. Information supplied by Lanny Howard a descendant of Mark Sackett: "... Jael was one of 6 children: Jael, Miriam, David, Betsy, Mark and Joseph. Jael's parents were Mark Sacket and Sarah (Sally) Heald - no info available on them, ..." In the notes I have for Mark Sackett; I puzzled over the fact that Patty Chrisman and Lanny Howard had a difference in the number of children for Mark; 8 children vs. 6 children. Just this morning, I discovered something which seems to answer the question. The information supplied by Mary Lou indicates that Mark Sackett and Miss Polly Herrick, both of Norwich, MA entered intention of marriage in Mar.,1810. The 1810 census indicates that they were married by the time the census was taken: Sacket, Mark Year: 1810; State: MA; County: Hampshire; Township: Norwick Roll: M252_19 Page: 110 Census: 001 00 - 001 00 Mark and his wife are listed as age 16-26 = b. 1784-1794 In the 1820 census they are both listed as age 26-45 = b. 1775-1794: Sacket, Mark Year: 1820; State: MA; County: Hampshire; Township: Norwich Roll: M33_50 Page: 136 Image: 141 Census: 100 010 - 200 10 They have 1 son and 2 daughters Between 1820 and 1827, Mark moved to Ashtabula Co., OH: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohashtab/1827DenmarkTwp.htm [link no longer valid] 1827 Denmark Township Census ASHTABULA COUNTY, OH Extracted and Transcribed by Carol Page Tilson Mark Sacket [Sackett] Starting with the 1830 census, Mark has a younger wife. 1830: age 30-40 = b. 1800-1810. According to the transcription I have, her age is the same in 1840. This could be due to the date of the two censuses. However, by 1850, Sarah C. Sackett is age 47 = b. 1803 and was born in New York. This indicates that Sarah C. ____ was the 2nd wife of Mark and that Polly (Herrick) Sacket had died between 1820 and 1830. This would also indicate that the FAG memorial for Martha Woodworth is incorrect when it lists Martha's mother as Sarah Heald [which is the same as the information in my database presently online]. Sacket, Mark [W #567] Year: 1830; State: OH; County: Ashtabula; Township: Denmark Roll: M19_126 Page: 118 Image: 238 Census: 012 000 100 000 0 - 110 001 000 000 0 In the 1830 census there are two sons age 10-15 = b. 1815-1820. In 1840 these sons are age 15-20 = b. 1815-1820. However, the 1820 census shows only one son (under 10) in the household. This could indicate that there was a son born in 1820, after the census was taken. It is possible that this could be Horace, which the article about his headstone indicates that he was born in July, 1820. ------ Sackett, Mark [W #567] Year: 1840; State: Ohio; County: Ashtabula; Township: Millsford Roll: M704_376 Page: 203 Census: 101 200 100 000 0 - 211 001 000 000 0 ------ Year: 1850; State: OH; County: Ashtabula; Township: Dorset Roll: M432_659 Page: 494 1749/1812 Sackett, Mark 59 m farmer MA [W #567] [Sackett], Sarah C. 47 f -- NY Sackett, David 14 m -- OH Sackett, Jael 12 f -- OH Sackett, Betsey M. 10 f -- OH Sackett, Mark 8 m -- OH Sackett, Joseph 4 m -- OH Concluding thoughts I hope the remarks above are not confusing. In them, I tried to follow some of the thought processes I went through while working on this problem. I now believe that Horace Sackett was born July, 1820, in Massachusetts. The location in Massachusetts is uncertain. The article about his headstone says he was born in Chester Village. The marriage intentions for his parents were filed in Norwich, Hampshire, MA. The census for 1810 and 1820 has the household of Mark Sacket in Norwich, Hampshire, MA. Although the 1820 census has only one son listed, the 1830 census indicates that there was another son, age 10-15, b. 1815-1820. The 1860 census for the James Woodworth family has Horace as age 34 (b. c1826) born in Ohio. The accurarcy of this information would depend upon who supplied the information and whether they reported what they knew to be correct, or merely what they believed to be correct. The article about the headstone of Horace says that Horace gave his age as 39 when he enlisted for the Civil War in Dec., 1863. That would put his birth as about 1824. This conflicted with the headstone which gave his age as 44 when he died April 25, 1864. Actually, his age would have been 43 years, 9 months, ---- days. Some headstones give the age at death as; "in his 44th year" which indicates that the person had passed his 43rd birthday but had not reached his 44th birthday; which would be the completion of 44 years. The age given when he enlisted was probably a misrepresentation. I have seen other records where men around 40, or older, lied about their age to get into the service. Based upon the above, I have moved Mark's children: William, Sally, Martha, and Horace from being children of Sarah Heald to being the children of Polly Herrick. I have linked the individual I have as William Spencer "Spencer" as the son, William. Concerning the death of Horace It was interesting to see that, in the 1860 census for Kingsville, Ohio, Horace had two daughters older than William Spencer. They were both born in Ohio. Then Spencer and his brother, John L. were born in Pennsylvania. The article about the headstone says: "Horace Sackett died in Bradford County while on furlough visiting relatives." And, according to the record I found, Horace was buried in the William Bidlack Family Cemetery. Was William Bidlack related in some way to Horace Sackett?
