Hello Sackett Cousins, After my rather miserable trip home, caused by the problem with the sciatic nerve in my left side. The flight from Bradley airport to Chicago presented me with a seat that felt something like a brick with a little bit of padding over it. The flight from Chicago to Seattle was a little bit better. A three hour lay over in Seattle gave me plenty of time to stand up and let the pain go away. The 51 min. flight from Seattle to Pasco was what the previous flights should have been. There is no place like HOME. Since arriving home, I have checked my files for some of the things I mentioned in the discussions I led. I said, more than once, that the first mention of W# 47-Jonathan Sackett in the records of Kent, CT was 1750 when he signed as a witness on the will of Thomas Beeman. I had forgotten, and failed to mention that Weygant (pgs 50-52) says that there are records of "Jonathan Sacket of Hebron" purchasing land in Kent in 1745. He purchased more land in 1749. Weygant also says a 1749 record indicates that Jonathan conveyed some property in Kent to his son, Jonathan. This could indicate that Jonathan moved from Hebron to Kent, between 1745 (when he was "of Hebron" and bought land in Kent) and 1749 when he bought land in Kent and conveyed some land to his son. I enjoyed the presentation by Stuart Strothman relating to his book "Sackett." The novel is based upon Elizabeth Sackett, daughter of John Sackett who was abducted by the Native Americans and raised by them. Later, her son led in battles against the colonists. Stuart gave me a bit more credit than I feel I deserved. The information I supplied to him was not my own research. It had been shared with me by others. I was given a DVD "The Sackett Clan" and I can't remember who it was that gave it to me. Would the one who gave it to me contact me so I can give proper credit for the pictures that I use? Following the reunion, Sunday morning, I drove over to Warren, CT to attend church there an participate in the mini tour of the Sackett related sites there. I was at the church early and met and visited with the pastor and viewed some of the documents relating to the early days of the church. One document was extremely helpful in solving a problem I had found in Weygant's book. On page 109, Weygant says: #204 "Reuben Sackett (1732-1803, of Hebron and East Greenwich, in Conn. ..." In the notes for Reuben presently on the website, I have the following: "Note: There seems to be no record of this Reuben Sackett residing in East Greenwich. He was married in Kent, Litchfiled, Co. and his children were born in Kent and Warren. Reuben died in died in Warren, Litchfield County, CT." The document in the church related to: Warren, originally East Greenwich. The East Greenwich Eccleiastical Society was incorporated in May 1750 [Source: Connecticut State Library; Connecticut Archives; Eccleiastical Papers, Vol. 10, doc, 227] See also: A Genealogy of the Descendants of Thomas Carter Author: Howard Willston Carter This book contains the history and genealogy of the Thomas Carter family of Massachusetts. The information above indicates that the East Greenwich Eccleiastical Society was formed 6 years before the church in Warren was formed. It also indicates that, for a period of time, the area was known as East Greenwich Society. So, what I thought was an error in Weygant has been shown to be correct. I was interested in information Steve Barbee shared with me about some of the theological differences in Kent that led to the founding of the East Greenwich Society. In the afternoon, before I headed back to Windsor Locks, I was able to supply Ellen Paul with the URL for the images and transcriptions of the Sackett Letters my younger sister discovered in the Territorial Prision Museum in Yuma, AZ. Those letters center around the family of Reuben Sackett and his son, Dr. Samuel Sackett. As usual, I enjoyed meeting those I had not met before and visiting with those who had attended previous reunions. It amazes me that from the 17 people who met in Salt Lake City and formed TSFA in 2003, we are now nearing 400 members!! Wouldn't it be great if we could get ... Even 25% of our members to a reunion? Thurmon
Thurman, Thank you for your very interesting notes. Do you know what the phrase ³owned the covenant² means? I suppose the Society of East Greenwich met in homes before building a church. Does that make sense to you? I¹m in Derby now heading for Branford, Connecticut researching another line. My experiences here pale compared to the richness of researching and sharing our Sackett ancestry. Wish I could go to Hebron perhaps when we have a reunion in New Haven. Hope that sciatica is getting better. What a miserable series of hours on the plane! I know exactly how long that is. I¹m probably taking the same flights home myself. I¹ll get the minutes to Debbie after my return to Port Angeles October 6. Anne, I think "owning" the covenant means to accept or acknowledge it. I'd like to know if it's the same covenant that the Scots presbyterians were fighting about. One of my Brownlee ancestors in Lanarkshire "led the right wing of the Covenanter army at the battle of Drumclog" ( in the late 1600's or so, I think). It was so good to get to know you and spend some time together. I look forward to further good Sackett times with you! And I hope your trip back to the west coast is somewhat better than Thurmon's. Hi, When you say bought land in Kent is that USA or UK, sorry to be a pain but there are so many UK and USA places the same that I get a bit confused. That is and still is Kent in Great Britain... Still one of the most beautiful counties in the whole of Great Britain. I of course would say that , being English? I hope you all had a splendid time at the family reunion ,sorry we missed it.
