Hullo, I have just joined this group. I will be visiting Kent & the Isle of Thanet next week. I am esp. interested in the MOCKETT which is common down there (is linked with Sackett) Does anybody have information on the Mockett family? (I'm also interested in the surname CASTLE, esp. Thomas Castle b. 1pprox 1819, who changed his name to Thomas Gee) JOHN BIBBY (University of York)
John: Are you aware that there is a fascinating book "Mockett's Journal" published, I think, in 1836 and describing agrarian life in Thanet in the early 19th Century. I bought a copy about five years ago but am embarrassed to say I have temporarily mislaid it. Must re-double my search. Hi John. My wife is also a MOCKETT descendant, and we actually still live inThanet! She can trace her Thanet ancestors back over 500 years along several lines. We certainly have an interest in the Mocketts, among others, though there is no link to CASTLE that we know of. If you wish to know where we fit in, look us up in the member list (under Martin-Dickin). At the time I submitted the line of descent I had only been able to put it together from the LDS records, which have some transcription errors (e.g. Mary Fatham should be Mary FASHAM) and very few burials, but it is basically correct and I can fill in some more details now if you are interested. I don't see your name in the members list yet, but we would love to see how you are related. Are there any other lines you are interested in?Unfortunately my wife is not well enough to be able to meet up with you, but we had a lovely time a few years ago when the Sackett Family Association had their reunion here. When you come here, you might like to visit Sacketts Hill, and Mocketts Wood. There is a small ancient brass of one of the Sacketts in St Peter's Church, and a section of the graveyard allocated to the Mocketts. What do you do at the university? Dear Paul Sorry this is rushed but I am leaving York in a few minutes. You say "There is a small ancient brass of one of the Sacketts in St Peter's Church, and a section of the graveyard allocated to the Mocketts. " Which St Peter's Church is this? Thanks. I'll try to pick up my emails while en route. JOHN On 3 December 2012 22:37, Paul Martin-Dickin <pdmartindickin@hotmail.com>wrote: > > Hi John. There is a village called St Peters, near Broadstairs. That is where the church is. Look on Google Maps for St Peters, Thanet. Mocketts Wood is close by. > Date: Tue, 4 Dec 2012 08:39:36 +0000 > From: johnbibbyjohnbibby@gmail.com > To: sackett@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [SACKETT] New member, visiting Isle of Thanet int. in surname MOCKETT too > > Dear Paul > > Sorry this is rushed but I am leaving York in a few minutes. > > You say "There is a small ancient brass of one of the Sacketts in St > Peter's Church, and a section of the graveyard allocated to the Mocketts.
