    3. Hi Sackett Searchers: For those researching the descendants of 184-Zavan Sacktt and Abigail Bills; yesterday I received some information that was new to me. This past week Dianne Cobb sent me a copy of an article concerning Jacob T. Sackett, blacksmith, gunsmith and violin maker from the 2003 Summer Edition of the Crawford County Historical Society Newsletter. I sent a note to the editor of the newsletter asking for permission to use the article and for contact info for the arthor of the article. I have been given permission to use the article by the newsletter editor and by the arthor of the article. From: Thurmon E. Sackett violin William Moore: A am a Sackett family historian working with the members of the SACKETT-L@roorsweb.com and the newly formed The Sackett Family Association in an effort to update and extend the information found in Charles Weygant's book "The Sacketts of America." Two years ago we recieved a query from a Ben Lee, a violinist, who had purchased a J. T. Sackett violin and was seeking informatioin concerning the maker of the violin. From: "Bin Lee" <blee@sgi.net> Date: Sun, 15 Jul 2001 15:28:36 -0400 To: <wsacket@mail.ccc.cccd.edu> Subject: J. T. Sackett Violin Hello! I am a violinist and I recently bought a violin made by a J. T. Sackett in Saegertown, Pennsylvania and I've been searching the internet looking for information about him ... If you are related or know of a violin maker named J.T. Sackett, could you please reply with information about him, his background, and his professional history? Thank you and sorry for bothering you! At that time none of us had any information concerning J. T. Sackett and after several researchers combined their efforts we were able to make a connection for him and sent that information to Mr. Lee. This week I received a copy of your article about Jacob T. Sackett from one of our researchers, Dianne Cobb, and contacted the Crawford County Historical Society for permission to use the information in our Sackett Family History. Ann Stewart responded and supplied me with your email address. I also attempted to send a note to Ben Lee and his email address is no longer valid. One of the things I am interested in is whether or not the violin purchased by Ben Lee is one of the known Sackett violins. Ben sent me a transcription of the label inside the violin which, with his comments, is as follows: "J. T. Sackett, Maker No. 431 Saegertown, PA 8 1888 <<<(8 1888 posssibly being August 1888) Old Cremonia wood (would 431 be the number of violins produced up to that point?)" Ben Lee also found the following in his searches: Subject: J. T. Sackett Date: Thu, 16 Aug 2001 18:05:36 -0400 From: blee@sgi.net To: thurmonking@netscape.net "... The only lead I got was at Red Barn Auction: http://www.oldbarn.com/newpage63.htm 163. Half Stock Penn. Percussion Rifle - 36 cal., 33" barrel, brass hardware, set trigger, walnut stock, pewter end cap - "J. Sackett" maker of fine violins" One other question I have concerning Jacob T. Sackett relates to something I found while searching http://www.alltel.net/~yoset/CCo/history/1885/Woodcock.html ABBOTT: "History of Crawford County, PA, 1885." 1885 History: Woodcock Township CHAPTER XXXIV. " French Creek Lodge, No. 2371, K. of H., was instituted February 15, 1881, with thirty-two members and the following officers: J. T. Sackett, Dictator; John Flaugh, V. D.; A. B. Floyd, Asst. D; W. F. Moyer, Reporter; W. E. Yost, Fin. Rep.; E. L. Russell, Treas.; A. M. McGill, Guide; J. R. Mosier, Chaplain; C. W. Yost, Guardian; Jacob Fleisher, Sentinel; C. W. Robinson, P. D. Meetings are held every Tuesday evening, and the membership is forty-one." Do you have any information that would indicate what the affiliation and purpose of this lodge was? regards, Thurmon King -------------------- From: "Bill Moore" <wbmoore@gremlan.org> To: "Thurmon E. You have my permission to reprint my article about him. The printed portion of the label on Ben King's [sic Lee] violin seems to match the one on mine, and I had also guessed that the number was the number of violins Sackett had made up until that time. I do not know anything about Sackett's lodge. It may have been a "Knights of Honor" group, and many, if not most, 19th century lodges were social and provided a death or burial benefit for members and their families. Twenty-five years ago, Tom Yoset and I put together an article about the descendants of Jonathan & Lovina (Leonard) Weller--my interest coming from the fact that Lovina, when widowed, married my g-g-g-g-grandfather, James McKnight as his 2nd wife. The eldest Weller daughter, however, married Zavan Sackett, and I was hoping to find that Zavan and Jacob were closely related, but they're not--at least according to the internet Sackett histories. Bill Moore -------- I responded asking for the name of the Weller daughter who married Zavan Sackett and received the following: Emily Weller, daughter of Jonathan & Lovina (Leonard) Weller, b. ca. 1802, Mass., d. May 15, 1852, aged 52 yrs. 18 ds., prob. Meadville, Crawford Co., Pa., bur. Greendale Cemetery, Meadville. m. Mar. 18, 1819, Zavan Sackett, son of Zavan & Abigail Sackett, b. ca. 1781, d. Dec. 6, 1857, aged 76 yrs. 3 mos. 26 ds., prob. Meadville, bur. Greendale Cem. No surviving children, as Zavan's siblings were listed as his heirs. Crawford Co.
