    1. [SACKETT-L] Re: Grandpa Sackett
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Sackett, McKay Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/ChEBAIB/218.1 Message Board Post: Hi there Linda replied to your message on the Sackett List, this is a list of people all researching the Sackett name. These emails go to everyone on the list. All the messages from this message board also go to the list, but the list messages do not go to the board. Anyway Linda recommended even though there is probably some bad feelings between people that you really need to find out you Grandpa's whole name, where, and when he was born to get started. She suggested you start with Grandma if she is still alive. Since Grandma's don't live forever and some won't talk about things they don't like, another thing you do to start getting this information is start with what you know about your parent and Grandma. Can you get your hands on your parent’s birth certificate? It should have Grandpa's name on it. Might information like how old he is and things like that. If you know her name and it sounds like you do. Do you know where she lived her whole life? Was it the same place or did she move around? If she stayed in the same place it is likely she married in the area also. If you can prove you are her granddaughter (your parents and your birth certificates should do it). You can get copies of the marriage certificate; some of them list places of birth, number of marriages, etc. If you can get his whole name you should be able to right to Veterans Affairs and get some information on his military service. I have not needed to do this on the living but I know it is easier if you have their Service Number, but not impossible without it. If you ever determine he has passed away (and hope not anytime before you meet him) then you can get copies of his records as a direct descendant. They may only confirm he is still alive he is. I have worked some with the National Archives and go a couple of times a year they keep the old military records, and if you need help with it after you find out the war, I can find out where you can get the information. Maybe someone else has tried to do this and can help. Liesa Robarge lrobarge@charter.net
