    3. Hello Sackett Searchers; I have been reviewing the information I have for 714-Aaron Sackett. On page 491 Weygant says that he was a grandson of #75-Richard Sackett and names two sons for Aaron; 12720-William and 12721-Charles. But Weygant gives no indication as to which of his sons was the father of Aaron. Weygant lists three sons for Richard; viz., 167-Richard, jr., 268-Dr. John, and 271-Josiah Crego Sackett. Richard, jr. did not have a son named Aaron. Dr. John had one un-named child which was evidently a daughter. So I had believed that Josiah Crego Sackett was the father of 714-Aaron Sackett. However, the will of Richard Sackett indicates that although Josiah Crego was referred to as "my beloved son" he was not a Sackett and, therefore, was not the father of 714-Aaron. This past week Kathy Campbell sent me some new information which I believe strongly suggests that Weygant and others have been in error when they placed Aaron Sackett, m. Phebe Hart as a descendant of 75-Richard Sackett and that the Aaron Sackett who married Phebe Hart was probably 544-Aaron Sacket (b. bef 14 Jan 1767), son of 174-Benjamin Sacket and Deborah Buell. The facts known for Aaron is that he married in Litchfield Co., CT on 6 Jul 1786, Phebe Hart (b. 3 May 1763 or 1764). Vital records and the Federal 1790 and 1800 censuses show that Aaron and Phebe had 7 children born in Litchfield Co., CT after which they moved to Vermont about 1803. One of the objections to accepting 544-Aaron as the husband of Phebe Hart has been the fact that she would have been about 4 years older than Aaron and that he would have been 19 1/2 years at the time of their marriage in 1786. The 1810 census indicates that Aaron was, indeed, younger than Phebe. Kathy found Aaron's household in the 1810 census and said; "I can't believe after searching for him in the 1810 Vermont census so many times that I FINALLY found him. He is the last line on the page, and you can just make out his name." 1810 Vermont Census, Rutland County, Wallingford Roll#65, Printed page#141, Written page#214 Enumerated on or about 06 Aug. 1810 (Census Day) Aaron SACKET (indexed as Aaron SACHIL) 1 male under age 10 (William) 1 male aged 16 - 26 (Charles) 1 male aged 26 - 45 (b. 1765-1784) (Aaron, b. 1767) 3 females under aged 10 (Electa, Nancy, Malinda) 2 females aged 10 - 16 (Amanda, Phebe) 1 female aged 45 and over (b. bef 1765) (Phebe b. 1763/64) 1820 Vermont Census, Rutland County, Wallingford Roll#126, p. 246 Enumerated on or about 07 Aug. 1820 Aaron SACKETT 1 male aged 10 - 16 (this has to be either Malinda or Nancy, and not a boy - [Kathy's note]) 1 male aged 45 and over (Aaron) 1 female aged 45 and over (Phebe) This past week Donald Nolder posted the vital records from Sheffield, Berkshire Co., MA which has the christening date for 544-Aaron: Sacket CHR 14 Jan 1767 Aaron S Benjamin Sacket and Dorothy 01369-6 Additional information found in Weygant's notes on pages 101-102 for Aaron's father, Benjamin, of Sheffield, Mass., Litchfield, Conn., and New Lebanon, NY: A parchment deed, dated May 30, 1780, conveying 59 acres of land in the town of Goshen, Litchfield County, Conn., was, in 1905, in possession of Mr. Marvin Sackett, of Lebanon, NY. The grantor is Ebenezer Buell and the grantee Buell Sacket. The consideration clause reads, "given in consideration of the natural love and affection which I have and do bear unto Buell Sacket, my grandson." [Note: Family History of Southern NY, Vol. I, Southern New York Family Histories, Page 44; gives the date of the parchment deed as May 30, 1786] In the notes for 541-Buell Sacket we read: "When but 16 years of age he enlisted in the 5th Continental Regiment, which at the time was encamped at New Windsor, about two miles distant from General Washington's Headquarters, at Newburgh, NY. This regiment subsequently served on both sides of the Hudson and was on duty at West Point when Major Andre was executed. After the close of the war Mr. Sackett became a resident of New Lebanon, NY." [Weygant, pgs. 148-149] Although Buell Sacket was the one who received the 59 acres in Goshen, CT from his grandfather it appears that he remained in New Lebanon, NY. It is possible that Aaron went to Goshen following the land transfer [possibly may 30, 1786] and married Phebe Hart there in July 1786. Last year I corresponded with Brian Sackett who is convinced that 544-Aaron Sacket is the one who married Phebe Hart. Brian sent me a picture of the house of 12721-Charles Sackett, son of 714-Aaron Sackett. This picture is also in the book by Andrew P. Sackett; "Ancestors and Descendants of Frederick Plummer Sackett", page 63. In this picture there is a sign on the corner of the house, up near the eve which reads "C. SACKET" which Brian believes to be an indication that his father Aaron also used that spelling. Of course the SACKET spelling was used by the descendants of John Sacket of Westfield rather than by the family of 75-Richard Sackett of Dutchess Co., NY. So then, in the absence of a son of 75-Richard who had, or could have had a son named Aaron; I am now inclined to believe that Weygant's 714-Aaron Sackett did not exist and that the Aaron Sacket who married Phebe Hart was 544-Aaron Sacket, son of 174-Benjamin Sacket and Deborah Buell.
