What is a "Fence Viewer?" (I know, I know. One who views fences, right?) Anyone know?
Bill......... I think you hit it on the head. Check out the explanation on this site. http://www.townofgroton.org/main?cmd=get-townbody&id=45
Fence Viewer was an important job in colonial days. Not only were fences property boundaries as posted by Sharon, they also served to protect crops from roaming livestock. It was a fairly serious offense if your hog ruined your neighbor's cornfield or garden patch and the owner of a fence in disrepair could well find himself in front of the magistrate fined.
