Hello Sackett Searchers: Last January we had a discussion concerning a Bounty Land Warrant #55816 issued to Norman Sackett for service in the War of 1812. The land was claimed in Natchitoches Parish, LA and issued on 28 Jan 1913 with the Patentees listed as Thomas Hunter and Sarah Sackett. In the discussion we wondered whether or not this was the same Norman Sackett as Weygant's 1516-Norman Sackett (1789-1834) who married Sarah Weston in 1833; and whether or not Sarah would have been still alive in 1913. Information supplied by Donn Cutler led to contact with Maxine Chapin who supplied me with copies of the pages relating to the family of 656-Deacon Salmon Sackett as recorded in Bronson's "History of Tallmadge, Ohio". The pages relating to Norman say that "Mr. Sackett, made an exchange of his farm in Portage Township and for part pay he took land in Western Illinois, which was given by the U. S. Government, as bounty to the soldiers of the War of 1812. He went west to see his purchase in Illinois, and returned, he was immediately taken sick, ... He went to Mr. Weston's, his third wife's father, where he breathed his last on the 16th day of Aug 1834 aged 45 years." At first glance this would appear to say that in 1834 Norman used a Bounty Land Warrant issued to him. But it says that he sold his farm and took a Bounty Land Warrant as part payment. In the Military Records that Liesa has copied there is the pension file for Sarah E. Sackett widow of Norman Sackett. In addition to her pension she applied in 1878 for a Bounty Land Warrant for her husband's service in the War of 1812 and was granted BLW #55816. In her original application it appears that she signed her name as Sarah Sackett and the application was returned because there was no middle name or initial. In the response she gave her full name as Sarah Elixa Sackett and stated that she normally signed her name as Sarah E. Sackett and had no explaination as to why she had omitted the middle initail in the application. There is also the record of her death: "U. S. Pension Agency; Columbus, O Feb. 1, 1883 Hon. W. W. Dudley Commissioner of Pensions Sir: I hereby report that the name of Sarah E. Sackett widow of Norman [large stamp "1812"] who was a pensioner on the rolls of this agency under certificate No. 10118 and who was last paid at $8 to Mch 4, 1882 has been dropped because of information received that she died Mch 24th 1882 Very Respectfully A. T. Wikoff" ------ >From the number, BLW #55816, we see that it was indeed the BLW granted to Sarah E. Sackett in 1878 that was exercised by Thomas Hunter in 1913. Sarah died 24 Mar 1882 so she reassigned the BLW either before her death, or through her estate. That would explain why she is listed in the BLM record as a co-Patentee with Thomas Hunter in 1913. The question now would be; was Thomas Hunter was related by marriage to Sarah E. [Weston] Sackett, or did he buy the BLW from her?
