    3. Hello Sackett Searchers; I was going through some of my paper files looking for some pictures and ran across a letter which relates to Benjamin Gideon Crowfoot and Samantha Sackett. The letter was written to my sister in 1966. I hope this helps someone, Thurmon ========= Letter ======== Long Beach Oct 4-66 Dear Mrs. Stilley: Thanks so much for your information on the Sacketts. Since I don't have much information on this family, I'm happy to get whatever I can in hopes of finding a connection somewhere. The Sacketts are related to my husband thru his mother, Susannah Noakes; and I've made out a pedigree chart for you, starting from her so you will know how we are related and then if at anyutime you run across any of these names you'll know more about them. As you can see by the chart, I really don't have much information on them. In a book that was recently published by Arthur D Coleman or Salt Lake City, on the Noakes pioneers of Utah, he states that Sophia Crofoot was born 14 Feb 1818, daughter of Benjamin Gideon Crowfoot and Samantha Sackett, of Geauga Co., Ohio, just est of Cleveland and south of the shores of Lake Erie. Sophia's youngest son, on his 94th birthday, in 1953 (I knew him), said that his mother was of Dutch Origin (I have also proven this out as I thought Crowfoot might be an Indian name). He said that she joined the Church at an early age (the Mormon Church) and that because of this her parents kicked her out and never spoke to her again. Sophia married a man by the name of Whitehead, who later apostatized and wanted her to also, and when she refused he beat her and made life miserable and when she found out he intended to kill her, she ran away and followed the Church west. Her ancestors were, as far as we can determine, a mixture of "Pennsylvania Dutch" and English. Some family members believe she was born at Saratoga Springs in New York State, and there is some question as to whether her father's name was Benjamin or Gideon, or both of these. George Noakes and Sophia Crowfoot were married in Commerce Illinois in Jan. 1838, and are believed to have followed Soseph Smith, Jr. and other Mormons to far west Missouri during the early months of 1838 and were in Northern Missouri when when such Mormon disturbances as the Battle of Crooked River, Hauns Mill Massacre, Seige of Far West, and the court martial of Joseph Smith, Jr. took place. They migrated to Salt Lake City by late Oct. 1852 It is said that Sophia never spoke the english language wery well, speaking mostly Dutch. They were the parents of 12 children. <CLIPPED> Thanks again for your information and if I am lucky enough to receive anymore, I'll send it on to you.
