Thanks, Ted. I just looked to see where Dublin was and see it's in Bucks County. We've had a little bit of discussion here with Lynn Tinsley (who has researched the Bucks County Sacketts) about the possibility of my line being from the Bucks County Sacketts. I just looked just Dublin, PA up on the internet and see that it's also a location in Montgomery County, PA. That reminded me of an article I copied from The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine Voume 45, no. 2; Fall/Winter 2007. In it an article transcribing a booklet which was found and purchased by DAvid Green, FASG, a couple of Sacketts appear. The article is called "Sarah (Worthington) Walmsley's Book of Deaths Bucks, Montgomery, Philadelphia Counties, 1852-1876" For a listing of deaths of 1872, the following is transcribed: "Eiza wife of Jacob R Sackett of Moreland Mont'y died 6th mo. Oh, I messed up bit time. Her ancestors settled in Shade Gap, not Dublin. They spread to Mt. Union, Orbisonia, Neelyton, Dry Run, Newburg, and Harrisburg. You might be interested in the online resources at http://www.footnote.com/browse.php?xid=313#A%20New%20Nation:%201815-1860|185749 Also going through my files I found the following: Riesenman, J. (1943). History of northwestern Pennsylvania: Comprising the Counties of Erie, Crawford, Mercer, Venango, Warren, Forest, Clarion, McKean, Elk, Jefferson, Cameron and Clearfield. New York: Lewis historical publishing company. Retrieved April 26, 2005, from http://www.libraries.psu.edu/do/digitalbookshelf/30630209/30630209.whole.pdf Excerpts related to Sackett/Sacket individuals In Chapter 11: The Press, p. 722: .The Tribune Publishing Company has been incorporated since November, 1906. Of the men who have helped "make" the company and its papers during the present century were: Captain H. S. Phillips, new editor and vice-president in 1907, who retired in 1932 and was succeeded by Kenneth P. Williams. The captain had learned the printer's trade just after the Civil War and worked in p. 723: Meadville from 1885, when he took over "The Messenger." Edgar H. Sackett spent twenty-six years with the Tribune Company and its publications prior to I929. Charles B. Menold was reporter, editor until 1923. Of this fine group and many who came and remained, the leader was Walter Irving Bates. Born in Meadville, a student at Allegheny College and The Sorbonne, Paris, he was twenty-six years of age when he purchased "The Tribune-Republican" in I899, to which he gave his best abilities and energies as publisher and editor to his death on May 5, 1934. His interests were many, his activities large, his service to the community truly great. In 1901 Mr. Bates married Marion Sackett, and their four children-Mrs. Merwin Shryock, Mrs. Donald W. Gapp, Edward Irving Bates and Robert S. Bates-are the publishers of "The Tribune-Republican" and the "Evening Republican." Robert S. Bates is editor of the two papers, carrying the burden and responsibilities that his father, Walter Irving Bates bore so well for thirty-five years. In Chapter 17: The Medical Story p. 1087: The Marchand Family-The earliest known ancestor of this family is Jean Marchand, of Sonvilliers, Canton of Berne, Switzerland. The records of that place show the name to be the most common and one of the most ancient there. There is reason to believe the tradition that the original Marchands, of Sonvilliers, were Huguenots and were driven from France at or prior to the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes by Louis XIV, October i8, i685. David Marchand, son of Dr. David and Judith Marie Marchand, was born in Sonvilliers, May 4, I746. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Ludwick Kemerer (sometimes called Cameron) and, in August, 1770, came to Sewickley Settlement and took up a claim on the little Sewickley Creek, about two miles south of what is now Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County. Here he erected a substantial double log cabin dwelling, in which was conducted a school for the children of the settlement and which was also used for religious services. He practiced his profession of medicine continuously and during the Revolutionary War began the erection of a stone hospital, although frequently interrupted by Indian raids. The building, being stout with windows heavily grated, was frequently used as a fort or stronghold. It was undoubtedly the first hospital west of the Allegheny Mountains and Dr. Marchand appears to have been the first physician outside of Pittsburgh to make a permanent location in the West. He died July 22, 1809, and his widow died in 18I7, both being buried in the cemetery of the Reformed Church near Adamsburg. Their children were eight in number, three of whom were physicians -- Daniel, David, and Lewis Marchand. The first son, Daniel, practiced in Uniontown; the second practiced in western Pennsylvania. A grandson, William K. Marchand, died in Greensburg, and another p. 1088: grandson, John Irwin Marchand, practiced in West Newton and afterwards in Pittsburgh. Another grandson, Benjamin Rush Marchand, practiced medicine in this section, as did N. D. Marchand. Other medical practitioners of this family were: Lewis Marchand, George W. Marchand, Thomas S. Marchand, Samuel Sackett Marchand, James I. Marchand, John Louis Marchand, Frederick Marchand and Jacob Marchand. In Chapter 18: Historical Outline of Counties, within Elk County, Highland Township appears on p. 1189: Highland-Formed on April 8, 1850, from Ridgway Township and named for its high altitude. Large coal deposits and mercantile center. Villages of Chaffee, DeYoung, Nansen, Carlo, Sackett, Corduroy, and hamlets of Highland, Carlson, and James City, now known as Durant City. Population of township, 1,161. In vol. 3, pp. 5-6: ROBERT SACKETT BATES--As an officer of the Tribune Publishing Company, of Meadville, Robert Sackett Bates is not only secretary-treasurer and a director of this company, but is also editor of both the "Meadville Tribune Republican" and "The Evening Republican." He has extensive business, civic and social interests in this region of Pennsylvania, where he is widely known and respected. Mr. Bates was born July 19, 1910, son of Walter Irving and Marion (Sackett) Bates and a grandson of Samuel P. and Sarah Josephine (Bates) Bates. His grandfather was State historian of Pennsylvania, becoming author of a number of histories after the Civil War, the best known of which was "Martial Deeds of Pennsylvania." He was an educator by profession, superintendent of the Crawford County schools for six years, and deputy superintendent of public instruction. He was graduated from Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, and granted the Doctor of Laws degree by Bucknell University in 1866. He lived from January 27, 1827, when he was born at Mendon, Massachusetts, until he died in Meadville on July 15. 1902. His wife was born also at Mendon, and they both came to Meadville about 1850. Their son, Walter Irving Bates, Robert S. Bates' father, was born June 55, 1873, in Meadville, and died here May 6, 1934. He was owner of the Tribune Publishing Company here, conducting the enterprise for thirty-four years until his death. He bought the paper in 1899 after graduation from Allegheny College. Though he never practiced law, he was a member of the Crawford County Bar Association,. He held the major's rank in the Pennsylvania National Guard, which he organized locally, and for fifteen years he was a member of the Meadville School Board. For a similar length of time he was a director of the McCrosky Tool Corporation. A Republican, he was a delegate to his party's national convention in 1928. He was a member of the First Baptist Church. His wife, Mrs. Marion (Sackett) Bates, Robert S. Bates' mother, was born March 25, 1879, in Meadville, where she now lives. Robert Sackett Bates attended Meadville schools, was graduated from high school here in 1927, and in 1931 took the degree of Bachelor of Science from Allegheny College. In the fall of that year he returned from a brief pleasure trip to Europe, and began his newspaper career in association with his father in the Tribune Publishing Company, of Meadville. Starting as a reporter, he learned the different aspects of the business, and in 1934 was made editor of the "Tribune Republican" and the "Evening Republican," succeeding his father in that capacity. A little later he became secretary-treasurer and a director of the publishing company, continuing this official position along with his editorship. Mr. Bates is also a director of the Merchants' National Bank & Trust Company, of Meadville; president of the Crawford County Historical Society; and secretary of the Meadville Library, Art and Historical Association. In 1938 Mr. Bates was general chairman of the Meadville Sesquicentennial Celebration Commission. He has also served effectively as a member of the executive committe (sic) of the Pennsylvania Federation of Historical Societies. He is secretary of the board of directors of the Meadville Young Men's Christian Association; vice-president of the Meadville Civic Music Association; and secretary of the Pennsylvania College of Music. He is a member of the Associated Press, the Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers' Association, and the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. He is treasurer of the Meadville Infantile Paralysis Commission and one of the incorporators of Meadville Cemetery, as well as a member of the Meadville Literary Union, the Lions Club, the Iroquois Boat and Fishing Club, the Meadville Country Club, Meadville Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Meadville Round Table Club (in which he is also an executive committeeman). He is a Republican in politics, a trustee of the First Baptist Church, a member of the Chamber of Commerce and a past director of the chamber, as well as a State Republican committeeman. In spare time Mr. Bates enjoys fishing. Robert Sackett Bates married, November 25, 1933, Margaret Herr, a native of Ben Avon, Pennsylvania, daughter of Walter C. and Alma (Brown) Herr, of that place. Mr. and Mrs. Bates became the parents of three children: 1. Susan H. Bates, born September 8, 1935. 2. Robert Sackett Bates, Jr., born July 23, 1938. 3. Rebecca Thayer Bates, born December 9, 1940. Yes, the Applebys (my wife's line) settled in Dublin and spread into Huntingdon and some other nearby counties during the 1800s and 1900s. FYI, Huntingdon County was created from Bedford County in 1787, and Bedford was created from Cumberland County in 1771. Prior to 1750 Cumberland was part of Lancaster County, which in turn was part of Chester County prior to 1729. --------------------------------- Ted Smith [email protected] ----- Original Message ----- From: "Patti Hobbs" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, March 13, 2009 5:17 AM Subject: Re: [SACKETT] Sacketts in Huntingdon County, PA > Thanks, Ted.
