Art was born on March 29, 1925 on Ghent Hill, the son of the late William and Anna Horton Sackett. He was raised there with three sisters and three brothers, the fifth of seven children. As a child, Art enjoyed hunting, fishing and swimming in the creek behind the house. Art met his wife on a blind date set up by his brother and her cousin. Betty Searfoss of Milltown became Betty Sackett on June 22, 1947. They made their home in Sayre, moving to Athens in 1956. Together they raised six children and oversaw the raising of 21 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. He worked as a driver for Bob Clark Feed and Seed for 5 years. Then he worked as a diesel mechanic for 38 years at Lewis Garage in Athens. After his retirement, Art tinkered on lawn mowers in his garage with his sons and his best friend, Sheldon. Art enjoyed family, friends, pets and gardening. His life centered around helping others. Art and Betty enjoyed weekly card games with his brother and sister-in-law. Art's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his pride and joy. He is predeceased by his loving wife of 58 1/2 years, Betty Searfoss Sackett, his granddaughter Jessica Sackett, his brothers, Howard Sackett, Elwin Sackett and Clay Sackett and his sisters, Olive Sackett, Rose Sackett and Gladys Sackett. Born Sept. 17, 1927 in Sheshequin Twp. he was a son of William and Anna Horton Sackett. Elwin attended Ulster High School and in his early years resided with his parents on Ghent Hill. He was formerly employed for several years by the Perfection Oil Co. in Athens. He was later employed by the American Bridge Works of Elmira Heights, N.Y., for 12 years. Mr. Sackett was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Waverly. Surviving are: his wife, Yvonne Nichols Sackett, at home; two daughters, Maryann Sackett at home and Lurie Appleton of Candor, N.Y. two sons, Elwin S. Sackett Jr. of Elmira, N.Y. and David R. Born April 10, 1936 in Sayre, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William and Ana Horton Sackett. Gladys was raised on Ghent Hill and attended Ulster Schools. Later she attended the Allentown Wesleyan College. She was employed by IBM in Owego, N.Y. for many years until her retirement. Gladys was an active member of the Athens Wesleyan Church, where she served as Sunday School Superintendent and as a member of the Church Board for many years. Surviving are: two daughters and sons-in-laws; Gloria and Gary Reeves of Waverly, N.Y., Darlene and Doug Sewell of Sayre, Pa. and the joys of her life, her grandson, Travis Reeves, and granddaughter Bethany Sewell. Her brother and sister-in-law, Arthur and Betty Sackett, sister-in-law, Daphne Sackett of Monroeton, Pa. several nieces and nephews. Daphne was a graduate of Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, where she received her degree in commercial education. She was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army, 53rd Women's Army Corps Hospital Company. While enlisted with the U.S. Army, Daphne married Howard Sackett on Oct. 20, 1945 in West Virginia. Unpon returning home following completion of her military service, Daphne was employed by GTE Sylvania. She was a member of the Monroeton United Methodist Church. Daphne's life encompassed her home and family. Surviving are three children, William Howard Sackett of Elmira, N.Y., Dianna Sackett of Waverly, N.Y. and Karen King and her husband, Jeffrey King Sr. of Monroeton RR 2; two grandchildren, Jeffrey King Jr. and his wife, Connie King, and Travis King; a great-granddaughter, Kaley King; a sister Dolores Solbach of Pittsburg; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
