The LDS FamilySearch transcript of the 1880 census for the family of Hiram/Niram Sackett is: 1880 Census; Irving, Chautauqua, New York FHL Film 1254816; NA Film T9-0816 Page 425B Hiram SACKET, Self, M, M, W, 44, NY, Farmer, NY, NY Arvile SACKET, Wife, F, M, W, 33, NY, Keeping House, NY, NY Cathrine A. SACKET, Dau, F, S, W, 18, NY, At School, NY, NY Bushe SACKET, Son, M, S, W, 7, NY, --, NY, NY Thorn SACKET, Son, M, S, W, 5, NY, --, F On looking at the original image on Ancestry, it looks to me that the following could be changed: "Hiram" is more likely "Niram". There is other data suggesting his name was Niram. On the handwriting, the "H" of "Hiram" does not look like the writer's other letter Hs (see "Hattie" and "Here" near top of page, and "Keeping House" several times). "Cathrine" should be "Catherine". Her age, 18, is more likely "10". It's most unlikely she would have been at school at age 18. If Weygant has the right date of birth, 7 Aug 1867, she would actually have been 12. "Bushe" is, I think, actually "Burtie". His full name was Niram Burt, and it would make sense for him to have been nicknamed something other than Niram if his father's name was also Niram. Arvile's age also looks more like 38 than 33, although it looks as though someone has written "33" faintly alongside the original writing of the age. If her age, 21, at marriage in Sep 1865 was right, she would have been 35 at the census date. I'd be glad of another opinion on this record if someone has access to Ancestry. Regards, Chris Sackett
Hi, Chris-- I wouldn't have taken that first letter for an N, but it definitely doesn't look like an H either. Looking at some of his other N's, as in "New York," they're very similar. If Niram is already known to be a possibility, that makes it look pretty good! I'd say "Cathrine" does have an "e" in the middle--I don't know why they left it out. "Bushe" looks like "Burke" to me. The "r" is very like all his other lower case r's--kind of tucked in at the bottom--and the next letter looks like a "k" or an "h." Maybe the census taker misunderstood "Burt" for "Burke"--they would sound alike. I think Arvile's age could be 33. The second digit doesn't look much like other 5's on the page. Look at the 73 for Catherine Sacket in the next household: that 3 is pretty well closed up. By the same reasoning, could Catherine (Niram's dau) be 13? Either way (unless she's 10), there's a pretty good gap between her and Burke/Burtie/ Bushe. Were there other children in the family that have died or left home? Don't know if this has been helpful or not!
