Yesterday we received a form letter from M. Cohen in Texas, addressed to "Dear fellow Jew", in which he states he got our name from a telephone book. Interestingly, my husband's brother was once contacted by a Jewish person whose surname was also "Sackett" and thought my brother-in-law was also Jewish. Does anyone else have information about this connection? As far as we know, our family has always been Christian.
In the matter of one being Jewish depends upon whether one is talking about those who converted to Judaism, or whether they are born into a Jewish family. DNA tests show that those who are born into a Semitic family have a distinctive DNA that shows that they are Semitic and that DNA does not match any of the DNA results of Sackett males who have participated in the Sackett DNA project. However, if there are Sacketts who have converted to Judaism their DNA would possibly match the DNA of some of the other Sacketts but would not indicate that they are Semitic. Form letter that suggested the writer had gotten your name from a phone book. The greeting seems peculiar too. The name Cohen as a Jewish surname generally refers to someone who is or is thought to be of priestly lineage. Conversions to Judaism are not all that common, as far as I know, but at the same time are not unheard of either. The lion's share of conversions result due to marriage into a Jewish family. Perhaps a Sackett or two has converted to Judaism.
As I understand it the name Sackett is a diminutive of sack - below I have copied Ancestry.Com surname explanation English, German, and Jewish (Ashkenazic): metonymic occupational name for a maker of sacks or bags, from Old English sacc, Middle High German sack, German Sack 'sack'. Bahlow also suggests someone who carried sacks. German: topographic from Middle High German sack 'sack', 'end of a valley or area of cultivation'. Dutch: from a reduced form of the personal name Zacharias. Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic): from an acronym of the Hebrew phrase Zera Keshodim 'Seed of the Holy' (referring to martyred ancestors), or from a short form of the personal name Isaac. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Alice Sackett Sent: 27 February 2009 15:30 To: [email protected] Subject: [SACKETT] Jewish relatives Yesterday we received a form letter from M.
