Hi, I would like to welcome Zach Sackett to the Sackett Family Association as new member #395! I see some work ahead for you Zach. But with the help of Thurmon and Chris I am sure it will be figured out where you fit in the Sackett Family! Welcome to our group and happy researching!! Debbie Barbee TSFA President
Thanks Joan. Here's a bit more about my research. (I already have quiet a lot of Mockett info, but would like to know more about Eliza an Frederick (b.1824 and 18949 resp.) JOHN *==== * John Bibby of York is doing some research on the family of Karl Pearson (1857-1936), the famous mathematician. This has led him to two Kent families - the Castles and the Mocketts. Does anybody have any information on these families please? He has lots of information on both Castles and Mocketts and is happy to share this, but he needs assistance regarding the following: * Charlotte CASTLE (1822?-1902) b. Sturry, d. Thanet * Stephen MOCKETT (1818?-1892) b. [Ringwould???], Ripple, Kent * Charlotte and Stephen's marriage on 7 Jan 1849 at Canterbury, St Mary Bredin * the witnesses to the above marriage: "John CASTLE [his mark x], Anne TAYLOR [her mark x]" * a reference to "Rodaw's Town, Kent", which is where Stephen Mockett lived in 1849, and Ringwould??? where he was born * Charlotte's brother Thomas Castle (c.1819-1884) who changed his name to Gee in exchange for some a legacy from Thomas Jenkin(s) Gee and the hand and marriage of his 63-year old daughter! * Eliza Mockett (1824-1881) b. Ripple who married James Stevens (182901875) in 1854 (witness Willliam SKILTON/SKELTON), but had an illegitimate son Frederick (Pearson) Mockett in 1849, whose father was William Pearson QC, father of Karl Pearson. It is known that Thomas Gee was a "wealthy client" of William Pearson. It appears he may also have been a factor in William's illicit liaison with Eliza. If anyone has information or would like further information on the Pearsons,or on the Castles or Mocketts of Kent, please contact John direct on jb43@york.ac.uk On 2 December 2012 18:34, Joan Leary <joan.leary@ntlworld.com> wrote: > Hi John, > Welcome to the list, just a matter of information for you, there is a > dedicated IOT list it is isle-of-thanet@rootsweb.com they are a very > helpful > group of people, let us know the names of the Mocketts you are interested > in > as they are spread all over the area, and if I can be any help just contact > me direct with details. > Regards Joan > > -----Original Message----- > From: sackett-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:sackett-bounces@rootsweb.com] > On > Behalf Of John Bibby > Sent: 02 December 2012 15:19 > To: SACKETT@rootsweb.com > Subject: [SACKETT] New member, visiting Isle of Thanet int. in surname > MOCKETT too > > Hullo, I have just joined this group. > > I will be visiting Kent & the Isle of Thanet next week. > > I am esp. interested in the MOCKETT which is common down there (is linked > with Sackett) > > Does anybody have information on the Mockett family? John: Are you aware that there is a fascinating book "Mockett's Journal" published, I think, in 1836 and describing agrarian life in Thanet in the early 19th Century. I bought a copy about five years ago but am embarrassed to say I have temporarily mislaid it. Must re-double my search. I did send Thurmon a copy of a member record from the "Barker family tree" (a PDF, so I sent it directly to Thurmon). It's probably the one Jenn is talking about. It does appear to be the right Calvin Conner--it's too bad it doesn't have sources listed. The picture of him is the same as what I have linked to him in the database. Rachel Stella supplied me with the picture from pictures that her father had of the family. In the page that you sent there is one source that I didn't have and that was Calvin's 1863 registration for the Cival War. There is one error in the information they have for Calvin as born in Indiana. He was born in South Carolina; as shown in the 1860 and 1870 censuses. The death year is the same as Rachel saw but the hit she got gave the location of his death as Gary, IN. We know he died between the 1870 census and Sept. 3, 1874 when his widow married John H. Berry. The Sackett Family Association website sackettfamily.info has been updated with the following new and revised pages: • New members 394 Otta Sue Hill, 395 Zach Sackett, 396 Erwin L Ida • Added Cooke Collection of Massachusetts church & vital records (123) • Added Pittsfield Families compiled by Rollin H Cooke (61) • Added Bible of Smith and Jemima (Heath) Sackett This month's update includes transcriptions of records compiled by Rollin H Cooke and deposited at the Berkshire Athenaeum in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. The records were researched during the recent visit to Westfield for the Sackett family reunion. The transcriptions include records of descendants of some female lines not previously noted in Sackett records. Bad record keeping has left me unsure where I found the transcription of the Smith Sackett bible. Did anyone else who was at the reunion also see this item? It may have been at either of the Westfield or Pittsfield Athenaeums. Cliff McCarthy tells me it wasn't at his family history library at West Springfield. I'd like to get my source right. Glenna, Took a look to see if I could tell and it does not look like they let you see who won a bid, I didn't look long so it could be that it was not an auction but "buy now" and that is the reason we can see who got it. Only thing we could do is email the seller and see if they will email the buyer, to see if they will contatct us. Unless of course it is someone here and they let us know. I saw it only once and it was already sold. Looked like a possibly good "find" for us.
