    3. Thurmon, I found a record of John Wood that could be Thankful's father (in an attempt to find her mother) and found A John Wood who was a registered member of a Quaker Meeting around New York at the right time...The same can be said of Samuel Sackett. The records are buried somewhere in my research which is currently residing in a storage facility and it would take me a while to find them again - however I did find a grave for a John J Wood in Dutchess Co. NY: John J. Wood, Fishkill Rural Cemetery <http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=wood&GSfn=john&GSbyrel=all&GSdy=1800&GSdyrel=before&GSst=36&GScntry=4&GSob=n&GRid=8155413&df=all&>...no date is listed though :-( As an aside, after all the years I've researched the Sackett family, I actually found a wealth of information regarding my paternal grandmother - Elizabeth Welch. My great-aunt and great-grandmother were DAR and my great-aunt Carolyn was going to sponsor my application for membership. She died however before I could go through the process, then - low and behold, I found out I HAD the records my great-grandmother had so meticulously compiled (prior to computer research) including letters to/from her to people who had the information and libraries, etc...so I actually have factual data confirmed from that side of my family and they were the ones I knew the very LEAST about!!! I even have my great-grandmother's DAR pin safely locked away so it's not lost somewhere. and her membership records. 3. Well that new little insight is quite interesting. I know the Sacketts were always relatively well off but slave owners and in New York and in Quaker country? I have to wrap my mind around that one...I so totally appreciate all the help. I'm currently dealing with several full plates in my life: - My husband is sick and potentially has liver failure/lung cancer (we will find out more once we get the test results back and see a specialist in the next few weeks) - I'm working full time, I just started a new job in October - We have our hands full with 3 kids ages 1. 5 months old 2. 9 years old (in 3rd grade) and 3. soon-to-be 19 years old (trying to finish high school) - I also have two Girl Scout Troops - kindergarten Daisies and 3rd grade Brownies - Then there's my aging mother (we're concerned about her health) and my husband's aging mother (she's suffered a series of strokes in the last few years) not to mention our extended families and my husband's 4 siblings and their families - oh, did I mention our dogs? Our black lab had cancer last year, thankfully she is healthy and strong right now but she's 10 years old... So, you can see why I don't have much time to devote to this endeavor, especially since I live all the way in Seattle!!! Thank you to my extended family for all your hard work and research and especially for sharing it with me so I have a clearer understanding of our (shared) ancestors! 3. Oh, yes. One little tidbit that I forgot to mention... Samuel Sackett and Thankful (Wood) Sackett were slave owners. Check out the 1790 census. 1. Re: [SACKETT] Samuel Sackett & Thankful Wood

    3. Hi, Folks. As I mentioned earlier, I am descended from Sarah Sackett who married Samuel Gilbert, and who was the sister to your Samuel Sackett, who married Thankful Wood. Both were children of Joseph Sackett and ???. Having found the graves of Sarah and Samuel Gilbert on FindAGrave, I drove out to Amenia to check out the place and snoop around for info. It was a fun day, I got some library research in, and it led to a mystery. Samuel Gilbert (1724-1797) is buried at Winchell Mountain Burying Ground in North East, NY. Here's his grave: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=93298148 The cemetery is pretty cool, actually, well-kept and high on a hill surrounded by farms. I could find no other relatives there. Sarah (Sackett) Gilbert is not buried there. She's in the Coleman's Station Burying Ground, also in North East, NY. Here's her link: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=20916865 This was badly overgrown, almost impossible to get around. I was there right after a storm and many branches were down obscuring parts of the cemetery. In fact, I never found Sarah's stone amid the many, many Gilberts. I began researching the Gilberts in this cemetery and realized that they were not at all related to Samuel and Sarah! It made me wonder if there was some mistake made. Why were Samuel and Sarah not buried together? She did outlive him by about 20 years. The death date on Sarah's stone matches the presumed date of her death (22 Feb 1818) which makes me wonder where that date came from. I found it in a book called, "Burying Grounds of Sharon, Connecticut; Amenia and North East, New York" by Van Alystyne. Does it match info in Weygant or Jacobus (Families of Ancient New Haven)? If so, where did they get the date? I have a suspicion that Sarah was buried at Coleman's Station because her name was Gilbert and everyone assumed she was part of that family. She really belongs on the hill with her husband. The Quaker angle that someone mentioned is new and interesting. I wonder if one was a Friend and one was not. Anyway, there's some food for thought or grist for the mill, or whatever expression you like. My two cents, maybe. 3. Danielle, You are correct in believing that Weygant has incorrect information relating to the two Joel Sacketts he has listed. There were two men born near the same time named Joel Sackett. However, according to Jacobus in his "Families of Ancient New Haven"; v7, p1586, the Joel Sackett, who married Lydia Todd, was the son of Solomon Sackett and his first wife, Mary ___. Joel Sackett married Lydia Todd on 26 Jan 1879 and is believed to have died before 26 Jan 1804 when Lydia married Enos Moss. This is what I have at: http://sackettfamily.info/tekdatabase/g7/p7864.htm According to Weygant, pgs. 110, 162, this Joel Sackett was a son of Solomon's brother Samuel Sackett and his wife Abigail Blakeslee/Blakeley. This is what Chris has at: http://www.sackettfamily.info/g7/p7486.htm The Joel Sackett, son of Samuel Sackett and Thankful Wood is documented in the will of Samuel Sackett. See Notes for Samuel at: http://sackettfamily.info/tekdatabase/g8/p8778.htm Samuel Sackett is shown to be the son of Joseph Sackett in Joseph's will. http://www.sackettfamily.info/ui347.htm fam 3. 2. Hi Danielle, You are talking about my general area. My neighbor spends a fair bit of time researching deeds and the like. He's a surveyor, so he's quite familiar with the area. What if we did some looking into that later, in February? If someone else has time now, or if all that is needed is some photos, I'm glad to help in whatever way. Maybe in the mean time someone can give us some thoughts on the two Samuels. 2. I've been to that area on Sackett research expeditions and would love to work with you on this. I am descended from Samuel's sister Sarah, who married Samuel Gilbert. However, I'm at work presently and have no time now to fully respond. I'll get back to you later. 3. Out of curiosity, I began researching Samuel and Thankful many years ago when I was in college as part of my colonial america history class. I havne't been able to pursue this research due to a demanding work schedule and increase in my family (when I began my research I had one child and now I have three!) I had compared the maps I had from the 1770s to current day GPS maps and was able to guesstimate approximately where Samuel and Thankful's farm was. Based on online cemetery records I was able to ascertain some of their children were buried in a local Baptist graveyard and some were buried in a local Quaker graveyard, Samuel and Thankful and a few of their children are missing from local cemetery records and I believe I read that they were reported to be buried at their farm/homestead - my research led me to believe Samuel and Thankful and/or one or both of their parent's families were Quaker at some point in time either before/during or after the Revolutionary War. My question is if anyone has researched them further or actually been to the Sackett farm in Great Nine Partners, Dutchess County, New York. At the time of the Revolution, the land was "Quaker country". They lived somewhere near Amenia aka Ameniaville and Stanford/Stamford. Has anyone been there? I've tried to contact some people (realtors) in New York who might know that particular area to see if there is still a Sackett farm in existance but hav ecome up empty handed. I would LOVE to visit there and find out more. I have no idea why I'm so interested in this particular era of Sackett history but I'm very interested in learning more about Samuel, Thankful and their families (parents and children) - I'm related to his sone Joel. excerpt: "*Samuel Sackett*, son of Joseph Sackett and ___ ___, was born in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1747. He died in Dutchess County, New York, on 20 August 1816. He married in 1767, *Thankful Wood*, daughter of John Wood. Samuel Sackett served in the American Revolutionary War in the 6th Dutchess County Regiment.2In 1767 [Samuel Sackett] was married to Thankful Wood, daughter of John Wood, and in the same year settled on a *250 acre section of Big Nine Partners, in Dutchess County, N. Y., near Huns Lake.*There had been an Indian settlement on the property and a number of their deserted wigwams were yet standing when he took possession. He constructed first, for himself and his bride, a substantial log cabin, but later erected a commodious farm house, in which all but the two oldest of his nine children were born, and all grew to maturity. Gradually, as his children became able to assist him, his wilderness section was transferred into a cleared and exceedingly productive farm, and at his death, which occurred Aug. 20, 1816, he was reputed a man of large means. Several of his children had died previous to his demise and were buried in a family plot on his farm, and there he too was laid to rest. His wife Thankful lived to her 92nd year. In the war of the Revolution he was an active patriot, serving through several campaigns in the Sixth Dutchess County Regiment. By the terms of his will his Dutchess County farm passed to his sons Isaac and Joel. —Weygant, *The Sacketts of America"* * * Children - Hon Jehial Sackett <http://www.sackettfamily.info/g7/p7621.htm>*+* b. 24 Jul 1768, d. 1822 - Samuel W Sackett <http://www.sackettfamily.info/g7/p7622.htm>*+* b. say 1770, d. 10 Feb 1845 - James Sackett <http://www.sackettfamily.info/g7/p7623.htm> b. say 1772 - Hannah Sackett <http://www.sackettfamily.info/g7/p7624.htm> b. say 1774 - Joel Sackett <http://www.sackettfamily.info/g7/p7628.htm>*+* b. say 1774, d. 1836 - Phoebe Sackett <http://www.sackettfamily.info/g7/p7625.htm> b. say 1776 - Polly Sackett <http://www.sackettfamily.info/g7/p7626.htm> b. say 1778 - Betsey Sackett <http://www.sackettfamily.info/g7/p7627.htm> b. say 1780 - Captain Isaac Sackett <http://www.sackettfamily.info/g7/p7629.htm>*+* b. 1786, d. 1836 I've found this to be a pretty good resource to supplement my research: Find A Grave <http://www.findagrave.com> For instance: Joel Sackett & Betsey Husted Sackett: Joel Sackett<http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=49607878> Betsey Husted<http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Sackett&GSby=1774&GSbyrel=after&GSdy=1900&GSdyrel=before&GSst=36&GScnty=1991&GScntry=4&GSob=n&GRid=49608018&df=all&> John Sackett<http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Sackett&GSby=1774&GSbyrel=after&GSdy=1900&GSdyrel=before&GSst=36&GScnty=1991&GScntry=4&GSob=n&GRid=23603830&df=all&> current map: Stanford to Amenia, NY (including Hunns Lake)<https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=stanford,+ny&daddr=amenia,+ny&hl=en&ll=41.875952,-73.598099&spn=0.106472,0.154324&sll=41.84926,-73.556792&sspn=0.053258,0.077162&geocode=FX1mfwIdksab-ylX4_Oj-XDdiTFZx-F_nwR_rg%3BFayRfgIdyJyd-ynZFyoManvdiTECX1zuJEBz6Q&t=h&mra=ls&z=13> Any help is appreciated! -- Danielle Otey danielletotey@gmail.com (206) 850-1791 “Grow your world around your friends and family and more family and friends will grow around you.”
