Chris, Is Elizabeth Sackett from Simon line or the New Haven. I'm assuming the Simom line. PS: I really would like it if Sarah Palin is positively tied to the Simon line - your line. :-) Len Sackett In a message dated 4/11/2013 2:59:50 P.M. Hi Everyone, I would be interested in attending a reunion in Ohio or even Michigan as my great grandpa was born in southwestern Michigan. Sackett’s Harbor would be good too as I haven’t been there. I’m flexible - wherever we might have one or two Sackett Family Association members who would be willing to host the reunion! Sharon Powalka
Interesting, Chris. I had not heard of Barnado's before. A search of the web found a number of sources that mentioned Barnado's homes, including a few that mentioned kidnapping charges. I wonder how widespread the practice was of shipping young girls from England to Canada. --------------------------------- Ted Smith tcsmith@surewest.net -----Original Message----- From: Chris Sackett Sent: Thursday, April 11, 2013 1:37 PM To: Sackett Family Mailing List Subject: [SACKETT] A special day for Ivy Sackett Ivy Florence (Sackett) Alger celebrates her 106th birthday today. Arabella it would be doing like you did to help plan and organize the reunion. It is easiest if at least one person lives in the area help with things like making sure we don't end up in a bad neighborhood, set up stuff with local groups, or side trips, hotels, etc.. Actually Indiana (Fort Wayne I think) is a great place to have one since it allows the group to also take advantage of the huge Genealogy Library. At one time we had voted on a list that went West, Mid West, East, England (or something like that) with one every two years so people could save up for them, ex specially for the on in England which was planned out over 5 years in advance. There were several extras thrown in when someone wanted on in their area sooner. The exact locations were originally picked to allow people to accomplish multiple things at the same time. Getting together with family, and continuing our research, since part of our charter is to continue the research (Research, Share, Preserve). The research has been done in several ways. We have picked sites that were in the same time/place as a genealogy conference, we went to Utah to take advantage of the library there, England to check out "the home land", etc.. As I live in the Florida Keys now which is very close to living in a foreign country I have not been able to make the several ones, and am not sure what the current plans are for reunions. I do think we would want to keep moving them around the country/world though since the original reason still holds - getting more people the reunions from around the country. I know we had several people who have only been able to attend the one in their area. They have been held at the following locations already and since one was just in Westfield, MA I am sure the next one will not be out East - 2003 Salt Lake City, Utah <http://sackettfamily.info/reunion2003.htm> - 2004 Salt Lake City, Utah <http://sackettfamily.info/reunion2004.htm> - 2006 Cambridge, Massachusetts<http://sackettfamily.info/reunion2006.htm> - 2007 Fort Wayne, Indiana <http://sackettfamily.info/reunion2007.htm> - 2008 Thanet, Kent, England <http://sackettfamily.info/reunion2008.htm> - 2010 Portland, Oregon <http://sackettfamily.info/reunion2010.htm> - 2012 Westfield, Massachusetts <http://sackettfamily.info/reunions.htm> It looks like it should be in the Mid-West in 2014 this time but I didn't see anything that jumped out at me, on the website, telling me where it would be held (I'm sure I just missed it), so it may or may not have been decided... Personally I didn't get to make Fort Wayne and would love to do one there :-) Liesa On Thu, Apr 11, 2013 at 1:35 PM, dkbarbee@juno.com <dkbarbee@juno.com>wrote: > > ---------- Original Message ---------- > From: "Sackett" <Sackett@btinternet.com> > To: <sackett@rootsweb.com> > Subject: Re: [SACKETT] Next Reunion > Date: Thu, 11 Apr 2013 18:19:33 +0100 > > Liesa... Hello from Minnesota I/we have not attended a Sackett reunion yet, but would love to do so. I would vote for Fort Wayne, Ind because I would make a lot of use of the Genealogy Library there along with attending the reunion. We also have other stops we could make between MN and Fort Wayne to do more research. My husband is the Sackett descendent and I do all the research on our families. Grace/Richard Keir
Sacketts Harbor is in northern New York, about 400 miles northeast of Cleveland. Quite often the goal has been to select a location that is near where Sackett ancestors lived (so people can comb through graveyards, church records, libraries, etc.), a major archive, and some sites with local historical or cultural interest. Sacketts Harbor would fit some of those criteria. Other possibilities include Dayton, Ohio. I know we met in Fort Wayne, Indiana some years ago, and in Massachusetts twice. Other events have been held in Salt Lake City (9 years ago) and Portland, OR. The list is available at http://www.sackettfamily.info/reunion2003.htm . Note that the first meeting was 10 years ago this September. I suspect that locations in the midsection (Missouri through Ohio) might be prime candidates, if we can find a willing member to explore possibilities there. I would not rule out locations that are a bit further west, such as Denver. One also needs to keep in mind that some people might fly in, so it probably should not bee too far from a major airport. I have contemplated creating a US map showing where TSFA members reside. Such a tool would help to identify potential locations. I also have the beginnings of a maps showing Sackett counts by state in each of the US censuses, but it will probably take a couple of months before my workload diminishes to the point where I can finalize them for posting on the TSFA website. --------------------------------- Ted Smith tcsmith@surewest.net -----Original Message----- From: Liesa Robarge Sent: Thursday, April 11, 2013 8:59 AM To: dhroe@frontier.com ; sackett@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SACKETT] Next Reunion Dean, Not sure where you are but NY is not any more closer to the Mid West then a lot of the West. To add to what Liesa said, I would remind everyone of the history of our reunons. The TSFA organizing meeting took place in Salt Lake City in 2003 and it was decided there that the reunions would be every two years. The idea was to rotate the reunions to different areas of the country, and the world, to allow various members the opportunity to attend. The first was scheduled for 2004 in Salt Lake City. The second was scheduled to be in the eastern part of the US and was held in 2006 in Boston, MA. The 2008 reunon was scheduled to he held in England. In each of the reunons held thus far, I have managed to attend all except the one held in England. At each reunion, there have been those who have attended the reunion held in their part of the country, but have only attended that one. That was the idea behind rotating the reunons to different areas of the country, and the world. Those here in the US who could not afford to attend the reunon in England scheduled a reunon to be held in 2007 so that it would not conflict with the reunon in England. It was held in Fort Wayne, IN. Mary Lou Sackett did the organizing for that reunon. The 2010 reunion was held in Portland, OR/Vancouver, WA. Kathryn James volunteered and did the organizing for that reunon. The 2012 reunion was held again Massachusetts. This time in Westfield. Sharon and Debbie did the planning for that reunion. According to the original plan, the 2014 reunion would be either in the Mid-West, or England. Liesa raised a good question as to how we define East, Mid-West and West in our country. I remember visiting our daughter's in-laws in central Pennsylvania and her father-in-law said something about having made a trip "out west." When I asked him where he went out west; he responded: "Ohio." On the other hand, those of us who have lived near the west coast most of our lives will refer to Kansas City as being "back east." Maybe it would be better to define areas of the United States by time zones; Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific. Maybe Mountain and Pacific time zones could be combined. In the original plan there was one thing that given as a consideration for the location of a reunon. That was the availability of research facilities in the location, or area, where the reunion was to be held. Although, my personal interest in attending the reunions has been to meet those who attend the reunons. It would be nice if the next reunion could be held at Sacketts Harbor. I know it is supposed to be in the west, but Sacketts Harbor is closer to the Mid West and could be an alternative site for such a reunion. Dean Roe
Dear Byra, You are, indeed, a member of the Sackett Family Association, with member number 387. Your membership became active on 2 October 2012, and you are also subscribed to the mailing list at Rootsweb. Let me know if you are having problems with receiving or sending mail. The next reunion will be in 2014, but the exact date and location have not yet been decided. If you have suggestions about the location, please enter the ongoing discussion, via the mailing list (sackett@rootsweb.com). We are already reviewing various possibilities. Dear Sackett Family Association Members, As election time nears and my time of serving as your president comes to a close, I would like to leave you with a couple of thoughts. First, I would like to thank the members for their support during my tenure. I have really enjoyed serving as your president. It was made VERY easy because of the support of others on the committee. Chris and Jean have been so lovely to work with and have given me great guidance. Thank you both, very much!! My second thought turns to the elections. Being a part of the committee has been a great experience for me. I still have one year left to serve on my term on the committee and I look forward to it. The amount of time that is spent is negligible, unless you happen to be the webmaster, historian or registrar! I hope we have those positions covered for a LONG time!!! Jean has made it especially easy for me to send out the welcome messages to the new members. It really made me feel good when a dialog started from one of my welcome messages! I met many new people at the reunion in September, I really hope some of you will think about submitting your name as a candidate for the committee. We always welcome new people, thoughts and ideas! Please, even if you are brand new to the Association, think about the committee, it is a commitment that you won't be sorry about. My last concern is for the next reunion. I believe I saw a note to the list just this week asking when and where. That's the big question, isn't it. At the reunion we had many thoughts. It has been our intention to rotate the locations of the reunions - EAST - WEST - CENTRAL -???? We did have some interest in holding a reunion at Sackett's Harbor, but that would be another reunion in the east. It was left at the 2012 reunion that if no one stepped up, the reunion would be by default held in Salt Lake City. I would like to hear from the membership, thoughts on this next reunion. Where would YOU be likely to attend a reunion? Let's keep our Association vibrant and fresh! Here's to another successful year!! Debbie Barbee TSFA President
Debbie, I'm afraid I'm not an, "active" member but do enjoy the correspondences and hope to get back on track with my own research soon. I'm in the midst of relocating from South Carolina to St. Louis where I lived for 20 years, and where my children and grandchild are. When the dust settles, it will be fun to find out more about my family. Thanks so very much for your willingness to serve as president. All groups need that special someone willing to step up to take the lead, and from what I've seen, you've done a wonderful job... thanks to all who contribute to make the association great! In addition to what Debbie said I would encourage anyone interested to ask what any of the committee positions include. In all of my years on the committee my time involvement has been minimal. New voices are always helpful to keep us moving forward! please send information to subscribe and be a member of sackett family. When is next reunion and wont to attend.
My grandmother's sister, Mary Jane Sackett, passed away last week. They are Leslie Robert Sackett (#13444 in Thurmon's database) and Bertha Mary Diehl's only two children. From the April 5th, 2013 Altoona Mirror... http://www.altoonamirror.com/page/content.detail/id/570337/Mary-Jane-Boyer.html?nav=743 Mary Jane Boyer, 87, Bethel Park, formerly of Altoona, died Tuesday, April 2, 2013. She was the wife of the late Lawrence G. Boyer Jr.; loving mother of Guy Boyer and Kim (Gary) Schaff; beloved grandmother of Stephanie, Kirsten and Hunter; and sister of Shirley Hosterman. She is also survived by her nephew, Doug McFarland; and two great-grandchildren. Mary Jane was a graduate of the Western Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing, where she became an registered nurse. She was a member of the Women's Club of Bethel Park, the Nurses Club of Southwestern Pennsylvania and multiple bridge and card clubs. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at John F. Slater Funeral Home Inc., 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 6, 2013.
To all Sackett Family Association members, It is time once again for the election of TSFA members to the Association Committee. We are looking for up to six new Committee members: four to serve for three years as the Class of 2016, and two to fill vacancies in the Classes of 2014 and 2015. The Class of 2013 stands down at this election. Its members are Glenna Hertzler, Liesa Robarge, Darlene Sackett, and Michael Trickey. Under the Association's Constitution, members may serve on the Committee for continuous periods of up to six years. This means that Glenna and Darlene, who have served from 2009, cannot stand for the Class of 2016, but can stand for either Class of 2015 or 2014. Liesa and Mike have served from 2010, so are eligible for any Class. According to our Constitution, those wishing to run for a seat on the Committee will submit their names to the Nominating Committee, along with a short biography and statement of qualifications (not to exceed 250 words and not mandatory). It is also possible to nominate someone other than yourself, if you have that person's approval. Names and biographies will be posted on the TSFA Website for members to review. In volunteering to stand for election, please write the Nominating Committee at nominate@sackettfamily.info. The closing date for nominations is 21 April. Voting will be from 22 April to 5 May, at an email address set up for the purpose. Results of the voting will be announced promptly after that. These elections are to a seat on the Association Committee, not to a specific office. The new Committee will elect among themselves officers to serve as President, Vice President, Secretary, and Registrar. Any organization depends on the participation of its members to remain vibrant and growing. It is important to have new ideas and fresh approaches brought into the mix. You are encouraged to stand for election as a member of the TSFA Committee. This is an excellent way for you to help our organization provide the services that you have found helpful in your genealogical research.
