I was mistaken, the dentist in my towns name is Dale. I wrote that e-male this morning, then looked at scholarship applications this afternoon, and his daughters name was on one of them with her father signing. Cute, smart girl. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Thurmon E. King" <thurmonking@juno.com> To: <SACKETT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, May 14, 2003 10:07 AM Subject: Re: [SACKETT-L] Charles H. There were some of the descendants of Orlin/Orlen/Orland Sackett who migrated from MN to the area around Sundance and were also in other parts of WY as well as migrating to CA. The articles about Charles H. Sackett were in the material the Bradley Sackett sent to me which related to the descendants of Orland Sackett. But as one can see Charles was from a different line. The Jesse Sacket who was in Fayette Co., PA in the 1850 census appears to be a promising prospect for being the one who was in Elk, IA in 1870 ... But the name of his wife is different from what Charles said that his mother's name was. Could be that Jesse had a 2nd marriage? Sundance, is a little town in Northeastern Wyoming, not far from the South Dakota Border. The closest town people probably have heard of is Spearfish SD. Or if any one goes to Sturgis SD for that big motorcycle rally, its about 30 miles west of Sturgis. Also where Devils Tower National Monument is. Probably known to people as the monument Richard Drifis kept sculpturing in Close Encounters of the 3rd kind. Also where the Sundance Kid got his name. It has a low population, even for Wyoming standards, which has the lowest population per square mile in the US. I don't know if Charles Sackett's relatives are still in the state, but a local dentist in my town in Wyoming is named Charles Sacket. I have never met him. LAST RITES ON TUESDAY FOR CHARLES H. SACKETT ------- Funeral services for Charles H. Sackett, pioneer resident of this city who was shot and killed at Sand Creek on July fourth, were held at the Commercial Theatre on July 6th, Judge Harry P. haley, officiating. A quarted, Mr. and Mrs Edwin Rounds, Mrs. H. P. Haley and Roger Thomas, with Mrs. Leslie Hooper at the piano rendered several selections. Mr. Sackett had written his own obituary which was read by Judge Haley, as follows: Charleh Henry Sackett, born September 2, 1859 in Deleware County, Iowa, son of Jesse Sackett and Elizabeth Michaels Sackett. Father died whien I was 12 years old, my mother when I was4. Attended school seven months all told. In my early life worked on the Mississippi River boats, learned to cook, but could not stand the confinement. Came to Dakota Territory with a government surveying crew in 1879. Township work in Sully and Highes Counties. Outfit returned in 1880. I was give an instrument and made a U. S. Government surveyor. In November the Northwestern Stage and Transportation Company moved down from Bismark and I obtained work in the freight house. All amil and express freight and passengers had to be ferried across the Missouri River. Few men could pull an oar or liked to be ducked in the "Big Muddy". I could do one and was not afraid of the other so the times that the river was bad, that was my job. The other man was Richard Clark, (Deadwood Dick). During the summer I filled in wherever there was a man short, in fact, a utility man. Was cook, messenger, stage driver, watchman and weighmaster. Was even loaned out to the Wyoming stage company when they ran short of men. In 1885 the C. N. & N. W. R. R. was completed to Buffalo Gap. That put my company out of business. November 16, 1885 I went to work for W. H. Blair of Rapid City as a bartender. Continued in his employ until December, 1889. Then prohibition. Moved the Blair saloon to Sundance, Wyoming. Opened in Sundance on April 30th, 1890. Sold the saloon to Serasio, November 12, 1917. Established the Sundance Garage in 1913. Retired in February, 1936. Was married to Mary E. Holmes at St. Cloud, Minnesota in January 1890. She died November 2, 1928. ATHE PERFECT WIFE. All I ask is, that my friends can say that I was a Square Shooter. C. H. SACKETT Mr. Sackett also left the following poem by Edgar A. Guest to be read at the services: "Instructions" There was a band of black on hes arm, and they said "He is mourning still for his lovely dead." But when I am gone, if you mourn for me Paint not your grief for the world to see. Remember me down through the few left years Rather with smiles than with sighs or tears. Walk through the world, as you've always done With a word of greeting for everyone. If others are happy, then you be gay Don't carry your grief to their holiday. Customs are nothing. Your love I know Will follow me on when I'm called to go. And if I shall wonder how much you grieve I shall look at your heart and not your sleeve.
Official Paper Crook County, City of Sundance and U. S. Land Office The Sundance Times Published Thursday in the Black Hills of Wyoming Volume 41; Thursday July 8, 1937 TRAGIC DEATH OF CHAS. H. SACKETT Stray Bullet From Target Pistol Ends Life Of Aged Man ----- Was Resident of Sundance for Almost Fifty Years; Funeral on Tuesday Charles H. Sackett, respected resident of Sundance for more than half a century, was accidently shot and instantly killed last Sunday the Fourth, while on a fishing trip to Sand Creek. The bullet which ended Mr. Sackett's life came from a .32 pistol in the hands of Walter Curnow, municipal judge at Lead who was shooting at a target. On Sunday morning Mr. Sackett and Dr. Clarenbach made one of their occasional fishing excursions to Sand Creek. The fished in the morning and made a good catch. At noon, they went back to the car for their lunch. Dr. Clarenbach sat on the running board of the car, Mr. Sackett sitting near him on a stool, that he always took with him on fishing trips. They had finished their lunch and were visiting when a bullet whistled by very close to them. They remarked on the reckless way some one was shooting and Dr. Clarenbach yelling a warning to the shooters, but just as he called, another shot rang out and Mr. Sackett grabbed his left side and said: "Doc., I'm shot." and started to fall from the stool. The doctor grabbed him, and laid him down. He gasped a couple of times and was gone. The bullet had ploughed its way directly thru the heart. The doctor immediately summoned the shooters who happened to be Municipal Judge Curnow of Lead and Mr. Krambak, former sheriff of Lawrence County. Curnow was doing the shooting using a small pistol of 32 calibre. Mr. Krambak immediately drove to Sundance to notify authorities, and the county attorney, sheriff and coroner visited the scene of the tragedy but it was decided that no inquest was necessary. Thus was the life of Charles Sackett snuffed out, a life largely spent on the last frontier, where, in the pioneer days gun play was an every day occurrence. During his lifetime, Mr. Sackett witnessed many an exciting experience in the frontier towns, and loved to tell the stories of those happenings of a half century and more ago. Charles H. Sackett was born at Elkader, Iowa on September 2nd 1859. When but a lad he came west, arriving at Pierre, South Dakota when he was about 17 years of age. Pierre, at that time was the outfitting point for the bull teams and freighters who made regular trips to the Black Hills, following the gold rush. Regular stages were operated between Pierre and Deadwood. It was a wild town on the western frontier. Here Mr. Sackett spent several years in various kinds of employment. Working for the freight and transportation companies he made a number of trips on the stages as messenger and guard. It was while he was at Pierre that he and Richard Clark better known later as "Deadwood Dick: were selected by the company to boat the mail and supplies across the Missouri river. No small undertaking in those days. Later Mr. Sackett located in the Hills and then shortly after the town of Sundance was started he came here and engaged in business. Mr. Sackett was actively engaged in business here for almost half a century. Mr. Sackett was a good man in every sense of the word. Upright, square, his word was his bond, and he had the respect of everyone in this corner of the state and over in the Hills cities where he was well known. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday at the Commercial Theatre. Judge Harry P. Haley reading the beautiful Episcopal service, and the body of this Pioneer citizen was laid to rest beside his wife who passed away in 1928. Charley Sackett is gone. No more will his familiar figure be seen on the Sundance streets. No more will his cheery greeting be heard by those friends of a lifetime, but with those who knew him best his memory will remain as long as life shall last.

Looking at the page 1880 census of Oneida, Delaware Co., Iowa am quite sure that it is Chas. T. rather than Chas. F. In 1870 census Garnavillo Township, Clayton Co., Iowa, page 235b Sackett, Charles, age 48, born Conn., Keeping Hotel , Phebe, age 43, born Ohio , Moses, age 22, born Ohio, Farming , Mary, age 19, born Iowa, Working in Hotel , Charles, age 21, born Ohio, Farming , Willis, age 20, born Ohio, Works in Hotel , Lysander, age 18, born Ohio, Works in Hotel , Launa/Laura?, age 14, born Iowa , Mary, age 11, born Iowa , Harry, age 9, born Iowa In this same township, page 245a Sackett, Lysander, age 50, born Conn., Farmer , Harriett, age 44, born Ohio , Charlotte, age 10, born Cal , Harriett, age 5, born Mich , Ellen, age 10 months, born Iowa In same township, page 236 Sacket, Benj., age 70, born Conn, Farmer , Thalia, age 69, born Conn think Lysander is the L.A. Sackett age 60 in 1880 census of Garnavillo, Iowa, page 351C born Conn, parents born Conn with H.E. Sackett, wife, age 55, born Ohio, father born Conn, mother born Vt H.C. Sackett, dau, age 15, born MI Nellie Jane Sackett, Dau, age 10, born IA Benj & Thalia are also in the 1880 census of Garnavillo pge 351D Benj. Sackett, age 80, born CT., parents born CT Thalia Sackett, Wife, age 78, born CT, parents born CT Just guessing that 1)Mary age 19 is wife of Moses 2) Lysander is a brother of Charles and they are sons of Benj and Thalia. Wonder about the death date for Chas. T. for 1873 age 71.. The ages of Chas T. and Phebe in the Tombstones of Delaware Co. would make him 20 years older than Phebe, the census has them closer in age. Perhaps the year is 1893 which would be more consistent with the censuses. Found this at the Delaware Co., Iowa site. It tells who Harry belongs to, but not clear on the second bio for A. W. Sackett. Charles T. had a son named Moses. Perhaps A. W. is this Moses' son? 1914 Delaware County History pgs. 20-21 Harry T. Sackett Harry T. Sackett is the owner of the Twin Oaks Farm, which comprises one hundred and eleven acres on sections 25 and 26, Honey Creek township. It is devoted to the general cultivation of grains and to the raising of graded stock. Mr. Sackett was born in Clayton county, Iowa, July 10. 1860, and is one of a family of seven children whose parents were Charles T. and Phoebe (Baldwin) Sackett. The father and mother were both natives of New England but were married in Ohio and in the early '50s settled in Clayton county, Iowa. In 1872 they came to Delaware county, taking up their abode near Oneida, where the father carried on general farming and also engaged in raising graded stock. He was much interested in public affairs and his aid and support could be counted upon to further measures and movements for the general good. He passed away in 1893 and his wife died in 1899, being laid to rest by his side in the Edgewood cemetery. Of their five sons and two daughters, four are yet living. The record is as follows: Moses and Charles, both of whom are deceased; Willis, a resident of Strawberry Point; Lysander, of Arlington; Laura, the wife of Charles Smith; Mary, the deceased wife of Lester Clark; and Harry T., of this review. The last named spent the first twelve years of his life in his native county and then accompanied his parents on their removal to Delaware county, acquiring his education in the public schools of both counties. When not busy with his text-books he worked with his father in the fields upon the home place and when about twenty-five years of age he started out in life on his own account, cultivating a rented farm for a time and afterward purchasing property. Today he is the owner of one hundred and eleven acres and the Twin Oaks Farm is one of the pleasing features of the landscape. He has added to it many modern improvements and his methods of cultivating the soil are progressive and accord with the advanced ideas of scientific farming. Mr. Sackett was married March 20, 1888, to Miss Lily May Martin, a daughter of George W. and Mary Ann (Scrivens) Martin of Honey Creek township, and the little daughter born of this union was buried with the mother in February, 1889. On the 9th of August, 1893, Mr. Sackett was united in marriage to Mrs. Hattie Bryans, the widow of John Bryans and a daughter of Elisha and Jane (Clugston) Miller. By her first marriage she had a daughter, Carrie, who is now the wife of Harry Coon. By the second marriage there have been born four children, as follows: Harry E., who passed away on the 6th of December, 1895; Harold T., who died February 4, 1898; Lilly May, whose demise occurred June 2, 1900; and Howard Carl, who was born on the 11th of September, 1903. The Miller family were among the early settlers of this part of the state. Mrs. Sackett's father came from New York and her mother from Indiana, and they were married in Delaware county on the 12th of April, 1857. Their remaining da! ys were passed in Delaware county and they were numbered among its citizens of sterling worth. They had six children, five of whom, together with the parents, now sleep in the Greeley cemetery. Both Mr. and Mrs. Sackett are widely known in Honey Creek township and in other parts of the county. He has lived in Delaware county for forty-two years and has therefore witnessed much of its growth, development and improvement. His interest has led to cooperation in many plans for the public good and at the same time he has carefully managed and conducted his business affairs, so that both his farming and stock-raising interests have brought to him a substantial measure of success. http://www.rootsweb.com/~iadelawa/bios/1914/sackettharryt.htm also: 1914 Delaware County History pg. 63 A. W. Sackett A. W. Sackett is a prosperous business man of Delaware, this county, where he has a general store. He was born in Garnavillo, Clayton county, Iowa, January 3, 1873, a son of Moses and Mary (West) Sackett, natives of Ohio and Wisconsin respectively. In the '50s they came to Iowa and their marriage was solemnized in this state. The father passed away in 1881 and the mother is still living. The subject of this review is one of two children born to their union, the other being Martha, the wife of V. S. Martin of Manchester. A. W. Sackett started upon his business career at the early age of fifteen years and for five years was employed as a laborer upon a farm. He then clerked in a store for thirteen years, but in 1907 established a general store at Delaware, which he is still conducting. He also has a garage and an implement store here. All of his ventures are proving profitable, as he is thoroughly familiar with modern business methods and as he keeps in stock the goods for which there is a demand in his locality. He also owns his residence in Delaware and is considered one of the prosperous citizens of the town. In 1898 Mr. Sackett was married to Miss Gertrude Moore, who was born in Fayette county, this state, a daughter of Rev. J. S. and Mary (Crane) Moore. Both of her parents are natives of Iowa and both are living. She is one of a family of six children. Mr. Sackett is a republican in his political belief and fraternally is a member of Golden Rod Lodge, No. 598, I. O. O. F., of Arlington, Iowa. In addition to owning his mercantile establishments here, he is interested in the Delaware Savings Bank, incorporated in 1914, of which he is a director. His success is especially commendable in that it has been attained entirely through his own efforts, as he was compelled to rely upon his own resources when but a youth and as he had but a common-school education. However, he did not waste time in wishing for advantages which he could not have, but applied himself resolutely to making the most of the opportunities that presented themselves, with the result that he is now one of the respected and substantial business men of Delaware. http://www.rootsweb.com/~iadelawa/bios/1914/sackettaw.htm
