Snakes and out 22 cal. rifle Earlier I recounted my terror when I was age 7 and some men fired some shots which hit close enough to me that it "was too close for comfort." We moved from the house on Rose Ranch after they sold their sheep and we moved to a located on Rock Creek a few miles west of Marietta, OK. We lived there for a short time so I don't have very many memories of that place. Another reason for me having few memories of the place can be attributed to snakes. Rattle snakes, cottonmouth water moccasins, and copperheads. Yes that area was infested with them and Mother kept us close to the house. And after Mother stepped out of the house one morning and found a copperhead coiled up on the step ... She was more determined to keep us close at all times. And at her insistance, Dad bought a single shot 22 cal. rifle and taught her how to shoot it. She managed to kill some snakes and was very relieved when Dad got a job near Marietta and we moved to a house on the outskirts of Marietta. Through the years I learned to shoot the 22 rifle, even though I was so small that I had to place the stock under my arm in order to get the rifle into a position where I could see the sights to aim it.. Of course, I loved target shooting and used every opportunity to practice. But I was limited by Dad not having the money to buy as much ammunition as I would have liked. There always had to be some shells available for Mother to use and I had to share the others with my older brother. I remember one day when I found an old 22 shell in the yard. It was a 22 short which is a low power shell for use in a 22 pistol. The ammunition reccommended for the 22 rifle are 22 long and long rifle shells. Well, I ran and got the rifle and put the shell into the chamber and set up a tin can on top of the storm cellar. I then took a position about 20 feet away from the target ... Took aim and pulled the trigger. I then looked in amazement as I was able to see the bullet come out of the barrel of the rifle, skip twice on the ground and hit the tin can !! In 1941 Dad was working a few miles away and boarding near his work, Mother and her five children were living in a log cabin. One morning our dog woke us barking at the kitchen stove. There was a cottonmouth moccasin under the stove. My brother Donal got the rifle and shot the snake. Later in the summer Mother heard the chickens being excited and discovered that a cottonmouth was bothering them. She got the 22 and shot at it ... but missed. She called me and asked me to shoot it and I dispensed with it using one shot. Mother then said that she had forgot how to aim the rifle and I explained it to her. Her next shot hit the mark. One more incident involved me watching a neighbor take the rifle and "stick" a kitchen match into the ground so that it was standing upright. He then set up 10-20 feet away and took aim. When he pulled the trigger, the bullet passed close enough to the head of the match that it lit the match ! Well, the first opportunity I had after that ... I had to see if I could do it also. But the best I could do was to shoot the head off the match, or shoot off enough of the head that it wouldn't light. I was getting so upset at this that Mother took the rifle away from me for a time. Later in life I was recounting this to a friend and expressed the frustration I felt at shooting away the head of the match instead of being able to strike the match and make make it burn. To this he responded: "Hey, I'd feel lucky to be able to shoot away the head !!" I guess it's just a matter of perspective. Thurmon

Folks! Welcome all new subscribers!! The Subscriber link at: SACKETT-L <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sidersn/sackett> has been updated for the first time in well over six months. Please be my tester and check out your listing. If old info, in error or not in existance at all, please provide the information and I will fix your listing ASAHP. This link is keeping track of major ancestor lines, Founding Members of SACKETT-L as well as TSFA information and DNA volunteers. Again, let me know if I've erred in any way. If there is anything you do not understand from missing previous messages, again, send a message to me and I'll be happy to attempt to explain. Those who have notified me that they are away on vacation have been left on the link although they are actually not subscribed as well as those temporarily unsubscribed due to illness. As most of the list knows, I have been trying to research all of the Michigan Sackett's for a long time. When looking through Lenawee Co., MI info at the Museum in Adrian, I found pages from the family Bible of Oramel Sackett and his first wife Cornelia Willey. I have this information posted at the Lenawee Co. website: http://dianesgenealogy.com/lenaweemi/biblesackett.html Between census records, death records, etc., I have found 3 different name combinations for Milford F. Sackett, son of Oramel and his second wife, Susan Betts. Fortunately we found Sue and her husband to set us straight on his name. In my earlier post on this site, I had Suzanne Sackett as "d. after 1984" because I knew she was alive that year. Was happy to find out she is alive and well now! Hadn't meant to imply that she wasn't! Milford had a son named Milton. I think that is why I must have made that earlier mistake. Anyway, I think this line is getting straightened out. The link to a picture of Oramel A. Sackett (Milford's father) is at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sackettheadstones/index_a-z/sackett_n-r.htm#O Hope this helps. Mary Lou
I suppose that now is a good a time to discuss the spelling of the names of our ancestors. As pointed out by Mary Lou; determining the "right" spelling of an individual's name from records and documents we manage to find can be interesting, to say the least. One of the things we often forget is that many of our ancestors were not able to read or write. As shown by the documents they signed with a "his/her mark". This resulted in the name being spelled the way the one writing the document heard the name pronounced. Therefore we have the surname SACKETT spelled as SACKT, SACKIT, SACKITT, SACKUT, SUCKUTT, SUCKIT, SUCKITT, SACHET, SACHETT, SACKET, SACKETT; just to list a few of the ways it was heard pronounced. An example which relates to the family of Milford Sackett can be found in the name of his father. Charles Weygant has his name as 4257-Orneal Sackett. The 1850 census has his name spelled as Oramer Sackett: Year: 1850; State: MI; County: Lenawee; Township: Blissfield Roll: M432_355 Page: 358 1435/1435 Sacket, Oramer A. 40 m carpenter NY Sacket, Susan 38 f NY Sacket, Eliza 10 f MI And other records have it spelled Oramel. So, how does one determine which is the "right" spelling? We've had similar situations with the names Orlen/Orlin/Orland Sackett Rolin/Rollin/Rowland/Roland Sackett I recently had contact with a descendant of Weygant's 600-Justice Sackett who has a family Bible which has his name spelled Justus Sackett and asked that I correct the spelling of the name, on the website, from Justice to Justus. Now, I could change the spelling in my database. But when it comes to Weygant's book, the best I could do is to put a note that the name was probably spelled as "Justus". And if I change the spelling in my database, then those looking for him based on Weygant's spelling as "Justice" would not find him. Briefly, concerning death dates. As Mary Lou pointed out; entering that one died AFTER a date does not necessarily mean that the individual has died. It just means that this was the last known date that the person was alive. The same would apply to a death date given as BEFORE as given date. Such as a will which mentions the heirs of a son or daughter who is deceased. We don't know when the son or daughter died but we know the date of the will which says they had died before that date. I hope this helps some in understanding some of the little problems we face in updating the information found in Weygant's book. Sue, I believe we will need to ask Mary Lou where this information came from. As far I can ascertain, Weygant and hence Thurmon King has nothing for #4257. The URL you sent me worked great. It's from the Archives of letters for this list. The URL you sent is a link to a message Mary Lou sent to this mailing list in November of 2002. Mary Lou must have found your SACKETT's in Michigan and was hopeing to link up with them. Maybe she'll explain to us how Milford got to be Milton...? Now, in updating the Subscribers page at SACKETT-L web site, I find I owe Brian SACKETT a HUGE apology!! He wrote the above message in February, when we were discussing the possibility for a DNA Group Study. I didn't take the time to find out who Aaron (714) was at that time. Another milestone and has already indicated he would definitely be a candidate for the DNA test!!! Brian, you are now on the web site as a DNA candidate! Feel free to send me from Aaron to you and I'll include that too! If I remember correctly, there has been some discussion in the past as to whether or not Josiah Crego was Richard's actual son or a step son...? Something like that...? Thank you, Sue Sackett ============================================================ Sue, I hope you don't mind that I have forwarded this to two of the surname lists I manage - SACKETT-L and MCKAY-ELKENNY-L. I personally (and I'm sure several on both surname lists) am VERY excited that you and your husband, John W. SACKETT have joined SACKETT-L!! John SACKETT, The Colonist who married Agnes TINKHAM is our line too! The Benjamin you include above was brother to our ancestor, Mary SACKETT who married Alexander MCKAY. Your husband is one of a very few male lines who have made it on the SACKETT-L list with the surname of any spelling of SACKETT!! Our dear and special Wendy SACKET brings her line down to us, Richard Heath SACKETT brings his line down to us, plus Richard W. SACKETT (snail mail only). That's it! So I imagine Richard Heath just breathed a sign of relief. ;) You see, the one who can be included in the study has to be a male with the last name of SACKETT. I believe I told you about the recent initiation of The Sackett Family Association (TSFA) in my reply to your first inquiry about joining SACKETT-L. We hope you will consider joining as a Founding Member of this currently no-dues association. As time and energy levels of officer's permit, we hope to organize a DNA Group Study to help determine whether of not we are connected to Simon SACKETT, The Colonist and all the generations in England whom Chris and Marion SACKETT of the UK have so diligently been researching. Chris has written a HUGE amount of information entitled the "Where's John Study" that I've never gotten back to him yet but SOME DAY, Chris I will get through it all and respond! Promise! :} So John W. and Sue SACKETT, I bet you never knew you were so important!! :) I don't know how to ask you this politely so I will just blurt it out. ;) Oh, please tell us you have sons!! If not, we will console ourselves, just as we've consoled ourselves in our own lines. It's the way things happen in genealogy. :} When John was born, did his parents know of John, The Colonist yet? So be thinking about the DNA Group Study. There is nothing to it. My brother took the test for our CLUFF line. It's a mere swab of the inside of the cheek of the mouth and mail it in to whatever company we decide to use in the hopefully near future. I know, I know! We have to get the TSFA started first before we take on major project such as a DNA Study. But hopefully within a year or two, a VERY IMPORTANT project for these surname lists is in line to happen and I hope John W. will agree to participate!! We're not putting TOO MUCH pressure, are we? ;) As to your statement that "Rootsweb has my husbands great-grandfather listed as Milton Sackett when it is in fact Milford", I searched WorldConnect, all of Thurmon's sites that I have in my IE Favorites, Chris SACKETT's One-Name-Study web site, SACKETT-L's web site and I did not find a Milton except for Shannon Spencer's family on SACKETT-L's site. Shannon as far as I know (she's no longer subscribed, I believe) never knew anything beyond her Milton SACKETT. So Sue, what is the URL where this "Milton" is stored on the web...? We'll be happy to help correct this if possible. If on WorldConnect, that's beyond our control if not a database of one of our subscribers. Sorry this message got so lengthy but this is a milestone for John, The Colonist descendants on SACKETT-L and for Mary SACKETT descendants on MCKAY-ELKENNY-L!! :) While I have these relatives' attention I thought I'd include some web sources. The Sackett information those of us on the Sackett mailing list have been compiling is found on various websites: SACKETT-L's web site http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sidersn/sackett Update to the Subscribers is under construction. I've been entering the Sackett/Carter connections from "A Genealogy of the Descendants of Thomas Carter" and have run across a Sackett that I don't have in my database and have been unable to determine who her parents might be. Does anyone on the list have any information? Or have access to census records that might help? In the Carter genealogy, page 174-175: 340. HARLEY PETERS7 CARTER (William6) b. East Bloomfield, N. Y., May 7, 1839; m. there Dec. 2, 1868, Helen Louisa Preston, b. East Bloomfield, Oct. 28, 1842, dau. of Orrin and Betsey (Cronk) Preston. Page 175 Res. East Bloomfield and Mendon, N. Y. Children, b. Pittsford, March 10, 1871, d. there May 4, 1904, son of Frederick and Rekah (Sackett) Buholtz. Child: Elmer Carter, b. May 13, 1902; d. May 16, 1902. This genealogy is the only place I have found Rekah Sackett and I have been unable to find a Rebecca/Rebeka(h) that will match with her. I found her daughter-in-law Elizabeth (Carter) Buholtz listed in: Honeoye Falls Cemetery, Village of Honeoye Falls, Town of Mendon, [Monroe Co.] New York: BUHOLTZ Elizabeth Carter; 1870 - 1960 and Elizabeth's parents; CARTER Harley P.; 1839 - 1921 Helen Preston, wife of Harley P.; 1842 - 1924 And three Sacketts SACKETT Emma; 1891 - 1968 Ethel B.; 1898 - 1922 George; 1893 - 1973 [Any ideas on who these Sacketts are?] Now, according to the Carter genealogy William Buholtz was born March 10, 1871 in Pittsford, Monroe Co., NY which would seem to indicate that his parents; Frederick Buholtz and Rekah Sackett were possibly living there for the 1870 census. And they were probably still living there when William Buholtz married Elizabeth Carter in 1899. I searched for Frederick Buholtz in the 1880 census on the LDS website and had no hits. I searched for heads of household with the surname BUHOLTZ and got no hits in Monroe Co., NY. All of the individuals named William Buholtz were in other states. One search indicated that there is a Fredderick Buholtz in the 1910 census for NY. Could it be that Rekah Sackett's name was a german name that was "converted" to Sackett? Any help is welcome Thurmon
"Witching" for water. In the account of some of my experiences with Old Red the mule; I mentioned us transporting our water from a well about 1/4 mile from where we lived. Actually there were about seven other neighbor families within 1/2 mile of the well who got theri water from there. Now, the 80 acres that Grandpa King leased; the house was located in the NE corner of the property next to the road which ran north and south along the east side. The house was on top of a hill and to the west was a 5-10 acre peach orchard. Late in the spring of 1939, while we were living in the tent, Grandpa, Dad, and my brother Donal were out in the orchard when Donal asked Dad: "Dad, how does Grandpa Sackett witch for water?" (Grandpa Sackett was called upon by his neighbors in Titus Co., TX to help them determine where to dig their wells because he was able to "witch" or "douse" for water.) Dad replied; "I'm not sure how he does it. But I'll show you what I have seen him do. He uses a forked branch from a fruit tree, like these peach trees." Dad then cut one of the newer forked branches (a "Y") from a peach tree and showed Donal how Grandpa Sackett would hold the branch (The forked branch was inverted with a tip held in each hand in such a way that it would not lean forward) and started walking across the orchard. Before he had gotten very far the branch started leaning forward and after a short distance it was pointing straight down. Dad marked the spot and with the branch back in the upright position continued north across the orchard. And nothing happened. He then turned around and started back going south across the orchard and soon the branch started leaning again and was pointing straight down ... at the same spot Dad had marked ! He then proceed on south across the orchard and into the field south of the orchard. And nothing happened. To "make a long story short;" Dad walked back and forth in the orchard; working his way toward the house, marking where the branch reached the downward position. During this process he began to notice that there seemed to be a consistancy in the distance between where the branch began to lean and when it was straight down. It ranged from 19-22 feet. I was with Grandma in her flower garden when we saw the three of them walking back and forth in the orchard and by then they all three had branches in their hands. The line they had marked out, which they had decided must be a "vein" of water about 20 feet down, passed about 40 feet north of the house. Well, with there being no employment for Dad at that time, he and Grandpa decided it was worth testing their theory that there was a vein of water down there. So they started digging. When they got 20 feet down they hid solid rock and decided that the water must be just below the rock. So, using a star drill and a hammer they drilled a hole in the rock and within a foot the hole was through the rock. But no water came out. So they decided to blast the rock with dynamite. When Dad was ready to blast we were all told to stay in the house, or to get well away from the "well." So I went to the tent which was about 150 yards from the "well." When the dynamite went off I saw a large chunk of rock come out of the well and landed in a thicket between the "well" and where I was at the tent. (We didn't find this chunk of rock until later in the summer.) The noise from the blast was so loud that it scared Mother and Grandma and they "laid down the law": NO MORE BLASTING !!! When the dust had cleared there was now a hole about 1 1/2 - 2 feet in dia. through the rock. But no water. They excavated some of the material from under the rock and as far as they could reach in all directions from the opening in the rock. Still no water. So the "well" was forgotten and the neighbors had a laugh at Dad and Grandpa "diggin' a well on top of the hill." In the fall of that year, Dad got a job with the Batsons back near town and we moved into the house where we lived when Dad became "The Ghost in Marietta Cemetery". The next spring, Grandpa came by our house to get Donal to come down to his place and help him "bail out" the well ! Water had come into the well and was up within 8-10 feet of the surface. But before the water had come in there had been some rodents that had fallen into the hole and perished. And that didn't make the water very desirable. Drawing the water out of the well took them several hours because fresh water kept coming into the well fast enough that if they stopped for very long the water level would gain back. Grandpa said that the water was coming into the well from under the rock on the north side of the hole they had blasted through the rock. So then, Dad had missed the water vein by about 2 feet. But Dad and Grandpa had the "last laugh" on the neighbors; because they ended up hauling their water from Grandpa's well ... Up on top of the hill. Thurmon

Recently I responded to a query by Darcy Moore looking for the ancestry of her grandfather, Arthur Monroe Sackett. Darcy's family have a family Bible which gives information on the family back to a Justus Sackett b. 1777, m. Fanny Faxon, but some of the family connections are not clearly indicated in the family Bible. With the images of the Bible pages, plus information from Darcy, information from Mary Lou Sackett, and some census information; we have come up with some descendants for 600-Justus/Justice Sackett. I have not included the notes in this register report. Thurmon ==================== Modified Register for Justice Sackett First Generation 1. Buel R. Sackett is in the 1870 census of Buckeye, Yolo Co., California, Buckeye is near Woodland, but with a different wife & birth state Sackett, Buel R., age 36, born Ohio, Farmer , Susan E., age 25, born Missouri, Keeping House , Harry E., age 6, born California , Herbert, age 5, " , Fanny, age 3, " , Louis, age 1, " Williams, Frances, age 22, born Missouri So this would be Susan E. Williams and the mother of the children. In the 1850 census of Hector, Thompkins County, New York bottom of page 389B is Philo Sacket, age 60, born NY, Farmer Gratia Sacket, age 63, born RI Mary V. Sacket, age 24, born NY and on top of page 390A Roxana M. Sacket, age 22, born NY Buel S. Sacket, age 20, born NY Could this Philo be the Philo that was the son of Buell Sackett and Sally Ann Beach and instead of Gratia it was Grace Perkins? I see someone has Philo as son of Buell Sackett & Lydia Buell, Grace Perkins was supposed to have been born in RI. Buell with 2 wives, Sally Ann & Lydia with Lydia being the mother of the children. Buell being the son of Bemjamin Sackett son of Jonathan & Hannah Graves. Line looks good...wonder if it can be proved? -----Original Message----- From: Thurmon E. Louella: I don't have Chester in my database and have been unable to connect the Sacketts in Yolo co. to anyone in my database. I did find some information in the GLO/BLM records for California.
