Therman, Your pictures and story of stacking hay on the farm took me back to my days on the farm and putting hay up. My parents had five girls before they had any boys. Us older girls got in on a lot of haying also as well as milking the cows, etc. I remember those old rakes and stackers operated by horses. My father also had one of the first combines in the valley and after it was obsolete it sat in our old barn yard and when we were cold and decided we were finished playing in the canal we would lay out on top of the old combine to get warm. One of those times when we wanted to go into the house to get a towel and get warm we weren't allowed in the house. We shivered and shook till we were blue all over. Later we found out that the reason we weren't allowed in the house was because we had a new brother. The first boy in the family. I also remember "tromping the hay to pack it down in the stacks and in the wagons that were used to haul the hay from the fields to the barn or the hay stack. There was a lot of picking rocks in the fields in the spring and hauling them to the rock pile. Funny, I don't really miss those days. I wonder why. Any way, I do enjoy reading your memories. They take me back a good many years too. Keep them coming. Pauline
When I typed the URLs for the pictures in my Hay Stacker story I reversed the colon and the slashes; The Urls are: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~teking/sackett_docs/sackett_pics /rake.jpg http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~teking/sackett_docs/sackett_pics /stacket.jpg Just call me old "red face". Stacking Hay Around here the harvest season is in full swing. And as I have watched some of the modern equipment moving through the fields I've been reminded of the huge advances that have been made in farming and farm equipment. When I was growing up in Oklahoma during the 1930s putting up hay in a field or meadow was quite an operation. Most of the smaller farms still gathered their hay using pitchforks to load the hay onto wagons to be transported to a stack, the barn, or a hay baler. And although many of the larger farms had moved beyond using wagons and pitchforks it was still labor intensive. After it was mowed, the hay was put into windrows, gathered up, and stacked. The equipment used was powered by horses or mules. Where we lived gasoline powered tractors were making their appearance in the fields of farmers who could afford to buy them. But most of the farms and ranches my Dad worked for did not have the "new fangled machines." The hay was mowed with a mower with a 5 to 6 foot sickle bar and then raked into windrows with a dump rake ( see picture at URL below) which would gather hay until it was full and then the operator would activate the trip lever which would cause the tines to swing back and up to dump the hay. By going back and forth across the field and dumping the hay at the end of a previous dump, windrows would be created. The windrows gathered up with a buck rake which would transport the loose hay to either a stacker to be put into stacks, or a bailer where it was compressed into bales. The main part of a buck rake was in front of the team which powered it. It consisted of a wide frame with prongs, or forks pointing forward. These were several feet long and about six inches apart and came to a sharp point on the leading end. These forks would glide along with the points just above the ground and gather up the hay from the wind rows. When the forks were loaded the hay would be transported to the baler, or stacker. One of my early experiences in this haying process was when I was 5 years old. We were living in a house on the west edge of Love Valley. To the west of the house there was a hay meadow. After the hay had been cut, cured, and raked into windrows they began the process of stacking the loose hay into stacks. My Dad was the one working on top of the stack using a pitchfork to distribute the hay on the stack so that it would be a uniform stack. As the hay was put into place he would walk around over it to pack the hay so that the stack would be firm and not fall apart. I was near the stack watching the activity. As buck rakes were coming in to the stack I could barely see the rider on the seat of the rake as he drove the horses that were pushing the buck rake with its load of hay on the forks in front of it. As the load of hay came in the man driving the horses of the stacker would position the rack of the stacker so that the stacker and the buck rake met head on. The load of hay was transferred to the stacker by backing the buck rake from under the load leaving it on the forks of the stacker. Then, as the stacker moved forward, the mechanism on the stacker would elevate the rack with the hay so that it could be dumped on top of the stack. (see picture of a staker at URL below) Watching that was fasinating enough but after the stack had been built up to where it was several feet high, my Dad helped me up on top of the stack to "work" with him. Of course, I was to stay away from the sides of the stack. I was having "the time of my life" running around on top of the hay stack "helping" Daddy pack down the hay ... Suddenly everything got dark! I was totally covered with hay! Frantically I fought my way out of the hay expecting Dad to come to my rescue!! Finally I fought my way out of the hay and to my surprise ... Instead of showing concern; Dad was standing there laughing at me. It was some time later when I figured it out ... Dad had "set me up" by distracting me while the operator of the hay stacker dropped a load of the loose hay on top of me. Hi Folks! Thanks for the outpouring of memberships to TSFA following Darlene's message about the deadline of 20 September to be a "Founding Member" and her explanation about our plans for the upcoming newsletter to be sent to SACKETT-L subscribers. In response to the questions about dues, I thought I'd include Chris Sackett's words in answering this question, for those here who might have the same question: "The Constitution allows for the possibility of subscription payments but there is no plan to introduce any fees at this time. If there is ever thought to be a need for fees this will go to a vote of the membership. I hope you will wish to join our Association." If there are any other questions or if you'd like a copy of the draft of the proposed Constitution, please do not hesitate to ask any of the TSFA Steering Group members, serving as interim officers: President & Sackett Discussion List Administrator - Nancy Cluff Siders <siders@cableone.net> Vice President & Family Gatherings Coordinator - Liesa Robarge <lrobarge@charter.net> Secretary, Treasurer & Registrar - Chris Sackett <chris@sackett.org.uk> TSFA Web Administrator - Fred Sackett <sackett@gnat.net> Historian - Thurmon King <thurmonking@netscape.net> Newsletter Editor - Darlene Sackett <djsack@juno.com> Members at Large: Patty Sackett Chrisman <pscstc@prodigy.net> Jill Jessen Hernandez <kpitblu@cox.net> Glenna Hertzler <ghertzl@sbcglobal.net> Wendy Sacket <wsacket@cccd.edu> Mary Lou Sackett <mlsackett@team-national.com> Brenda Sias <bsias64@msn.com> Later.Nancy Nancy Cluff Siders Acting TSFA President and List Admin for: CLUFF-L, COUNTRYMAN-L, LETSON-L, MCKAY-ELKENNY-L, SACKETT-L, SIDERS-L To forget one's ancestor is to be a brook without a source, A tree without a root. ~Chiness proverb
Hello Everyone! The interim committee members of The Sackett Family Association wish to give you an update on our progress! Many of you have signed up to be founding members with the association and we thank you for your participation. However, we would be delighted to welcome more founding members. To join now, e-mail Chris Sackett at chris@sackett.org.uk by September 20th. You can still join the association after that date, but without founding member status. The association will have a quarterly newsletter and the first one is scheduled to be sent out in October. The first newsletter will go to all of Sackett-L so that you can all see what it will look like, but all subsequent newsletters will only be e-mailed to those of you who have e-mailed Chris and joined the association! Also, to enable the SACKETT discussion list to be the communications vehicle for TSFA and for all of us to remain a cohesive group in the research of the SACKETT surname, it's imperative that TSFA members are subscribed to SACKETT-L. Just let the list administrator know if you need to be unsubscribed for a short period of time for vacation, illness, etc. Your TSFA membership and SACKETT-L subscription will be held as active until your return. Sincerely, Darlene Sackett Acting Newsletter Editor ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! Dear Sackett Cousins, While doing some research Saturday, I came across the following. I hope it may be of some help to somebody. Both references are from: The Pioneers of Winnebago and Boone Counties, Illinois who came before 1841 Katherine Rowland Gateway Press, Baltimore 1990 I believe this is #1503 Simmons Sackett "Simmons Sackett bought land in New Milford Twp 24 Oct 1839. In a deed dated 28 May 1840, he was ' of Winnebago Co.'" This is certainly a reference to #1227 David Sackett "David Sackett was b. 9 Aug 1804 at Colchester, Chittenden Co., VT., d. 3 May 1880, bur. As is usually the case with information taken from sources like these, there is conflicting information and not much in the way of documentation to support some of the claims. So I am trying to collect some information so that I can determine which information is correct. The only provable information for Nathaniel B. Sackett is that he was born in NY about 1817 and that his father was listed as born in MA and his mother in NY. That he was in Dodge Co., WI in 1850 then Fond du Lac Co., WI in 1855 and 1860 and then Pleasant Grove, Olmsted Co., MN in 1870 and 1880. After I asked you to look up Nathaniel B. in the 1860 census for WI I discovered that I had downloaded a transcription of it from http://www.rootsweb.com/~census/ 1860 Federal Census Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin (Town of Alto: File 2 of 2) REEL NO: M653-1407 PAGE NO: 70; REFERENCE: Enumerated on 23 June, 1860 14 532 532 Sackett N.B. 43 M Farmer 2,000 530 New York 15 532 532 Sackett Agnes 42 F Scotland 16 532 532 Sackett Cyrus 11 M New York X 17 532 532 Sackett James 9 M Wisconsin X REMARKS: Idiotic 18 532 532 Sackett Allen 5 M Wisconsin X 19 532 53 Sackett Robert 9/12 M Wisconsin [The child listed as Allen age 5 M is listed as Ellen in the 1870 and 1880 census.] One of the claims I have found says that Nathaniel B. Sackett was married 1st to Olive Agness Henry and fathered a daughter Olive Sackett who married a LAMBERT whom is supposed to have lived in Pleasant Grove, MN. According to this source Olive's mother died when she was a little girl and she was supposed to have been left in NY with her HENRY grandparents when Nathaniel and his 2nd wife, Agnes Young, moved to WI. Soooo, based on my theory that Nathaniel B. Sackett MIGHT be related to the Sacketts in Ontario Co., NY ... I was taking a "shot in the dark" when I asked about people with the HENRY surname in Ontario Co., in 1850. It looks as though there were a few more HENRYs in Ontario than I had expected. But I se that there are six listed in Naples. Maybe they would have something that will help. In other words, I'm sort of fumbling around trying to find something that might make a connection for the family of Nathaniel B. Sackett. Having some "technical problems" so will be next week before can look for you. I do know that a Nathaniel B. Sackett was in the 1855 Wisconsin State census of Alto, Fond du Lac Co. and that wboth125@yahoo.com is researching Robert. Ancestry World Tree lists Agnes Young as wife and that Robert was born in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin in 1855. -----Original Message----- From: Thurmon E.
