    1. Re: [SACKETT-L] A word of WARNING ...
    2. Ted Mudge
    3. I'd like to add a post script to Thurmon's tale of woe. I lost my system just after Thanksgiving, 2001. But I had been careful to make backups of my genealogy data base on a regular basis, so I was smugly confidant that I had not lost anything. When it came time to reload the backup files, I discovered that one of the floppy disks that contained the backup files was bad. Like Thurmon, I turned to the services of a Data Recovery business. But they could not help me. The file backup process of Family Tree Maker uses some sort of proprietory data compression routine which the Data Recovery people couldn't deal with. I had lost months of work, some of which I fully expect never to recover. Lessons learned. I will never again trust a floppy disk & I will never again use Family Tree Maker's file backup process. I invested in a CD burner. I rotate my file backups between 2 different CDs. And I use File Manager to "drag & drop" the FTM database file to the CD. 'Sorry to be off-topic, but the sick feeling of despair that I experienced is something that I wouldn't wish upon anybody. 3. Hi Everyone, I just got a copy of the survey I sent back to Leisa; sorry you all got a copy of my reply. I mistakenly thought I was sending it back to her. Next time I'll be more careful. Sandy sandrajmueller@worldnet.att.net

    1. [SACKETT-L] A word of WARNING ...
    2. Thurmon E King
    3. Hello Sackett Searchers: Some of you may have noticed [and possibly with some relief] that my postings to the SACKETT-L have been rather "few and far between" for the past month. The primary reason for this was the failure of the hard drive in my computer on 17 Sep 2003. When I started checking my backup files; I made the sad discovery that although I had installed antivirus software to protect my data from computer viruses ... I had been VERY lax [translate; lazy] in making backups of my data. I quickly determined that I had lost the work of almost 9 months when my system suddenly informed me that it could not write to the drive. My first thought was to "kiss it goodbye" and reconstruct the data. Then I began to think of the hours I had spent online collecting much of the data ... And some of the data is no longer available online ... And the loss of my saved email meant that I had lost the email addresses of many of those who have sent me information. "To make a long story short"; I sent my drive to a Data Recovery firm to see if the data could be recovered from the drive. Now, I had known that data recovery can be expensive ... But I almost choked when I was informed that it would cost from $1,000-$2,000 to recover my data. After I told them that I could not manage to pay that much and made a plea of poverty ... I told them to send the drive back to me. A couple of hours later the man called back and said that they had finally accessed the drive and that they could cut the cost of recovery to $750. According to the file list he sent ... All of my data will be recovered. Needless to say: I AM GOING TO START MAKING BACKUPS ON A REGULAR SCHEDULE. And if each one of you have not been doing this: START DOING IT TODAY !! Thurmon

    2. Chris Sackett
    3. Dear All, One of the 'finds' during researches at SLC was the will of Simon Sackett's wife Isabel. I have a note that the last 'sighting' of Isabel was in 1663 (although the note does not say what the sighting was!). The will now changes that to 1682, meaning she lived at least into her late seventies and that she survived Simon by 47 years. The full source for the will is: Town Minutes of Newtown [Long Island] 1653-1734: Transcriptions of Early Town Records of New York. Historical Records Survey, NY 1941. Vol 2, pt 1, p260. 3. Fred, Thanks so much for including your father's obituary on SACKETT-L. It is now stored on the archives with many other SACKETT's down through time. Your father lived a long and prosperous life! 84 years!! But it's hard at any age to lose a parent. It was a message of sorrow that my husband brought to me that day in Salt Lake City after you had called to let us know of your father's death and your illness. Mercy! Fred!! We do hope you are feeling better by now and so glad to hear that your illness proved not to be anything more serious than it was. We certainly missed you in SLC. We'll be filling you in on all that occurred in the days to come. 3. Jill: I found the webpage where you found the quote in your earlier message. On this page Little Canada is identified as a hamlet Located on Black Creek in the town of Bethany, Genesee County: "CANADA, a small hamlet on Black Creek, in the eastern part of the town, claims to have had a mill erected in 1808, by one BENNETT, one of a family who came in 1805, and for some time the place was called "BennettÂ’s Mills." There was a tavern here in early times. No business of importance is transacted at the locality at present." So it would appear that Howe and Waller came to "Little Canada"a hamlet in the town of Bethany which is still in Genesee Co., NY. I found the information below on the USGenWeb website for Luzerne Co., PA : HISTORY OF THE LACKAWANNA VALLEY HISTORY OF SCRANTON. page 232 "... The interests of P. H. Mattes were represented by his son, Charles F. Mattes, who, from the time the furnace was put in successful blast, has been efficiently engaged at the head of one of the more important departments. page 233 The liberal doctrines of Methodism, itinerated and diffused in the valley as early as 1786, were rarely practiced, and had but a feeble recognition in any way until 1793. "At this time", writes the venerable Rev. Dr. Peck, "William Colbert, a pioneer preacher, visited Capouse, and preached to a few people at Brother Howe's, and lodged at Joseph Waller's. Howe lived in Slocum Hollow, and Waller on the main road in or near what is now Hyde Park. In 1798 Daniel Taylor's, below Hyde Park, was a preaching place. For years subsequently the preaching was at Preserved Taylor's, who lived on the hill-side in Hyde Park, near the old Tripp place. When Mr. Taylor removed, the preaching was taken to Razorville, now Providence, and the preachers were entertained by Elisha Potter, Esq., whose wife was a very exemplary member of the church. Up to this period, preaching was held in private houses." School-houses, moderate in capacity, served for religious purposes until June, 1841, when a subscription was raised for the purpose of building a "meeting-house" at some suitable place within reach of missionaries and laymen. The great bulk of the subscription coming from Harrison Iron Works, governed the location of the church, which was built in 1842, and jointly and harmoniously used as a place of worship by Methodists and Presbyterians until the latter erected a place of their own. The Methodists have enjoyed the pastoral labors of A. H. Schoonmaker, Rev. Dr. Peck, B. W. Goram, G. C. Bancroft, J. V. Newell, J. A. Wood, N. W. Everett, and Byron D. Sturdevant." Are the Brother Howe and Joseph Waller mentioned here the same individuals? BTW: What do you have for the household of Ira Howe and Elizabeth Sackett? 3. Jill: The information given in this account is rather confusing. According to the information I have Wyoming Co., NY was formed in 1846 from Genesee County. And there is a Wyoming Co., PA which was formed in 1842 from Luzerne County, PA. Therefore it would not be possible for a person to have come from Wyoming Co. to Genesee Co., in 1810. So it would appear that the account was written after 1842 or 1846. My guess is that Wallar and Howe came to Genesee Co. about 1810/1811 from Luzerne Co., PA [possibly from the area that later became Wyoming Co., PA] I know ... You don't need any more confusion on your line !! :>) Thurmon On Tue, 7 Oct 2003 07:46:43 -0700 "Jill Jessen Hernandez" <kpitblu@cox.net> writes: > > > This is Definitely MY HOWE and WALLER line ...
