    1. [SACKETT-L] Newtown LI. Summary of Court & Town Records
    2. Chris Sackett
    3. Dear All, I give below a list of the items copied at SLC from the early Newtown (Long Island) records. I will gradually get transcripts of these documents posted to the List but if there are any special requests I will do those first. There are 3 volumes of these records - Vol 1 containing the Court records, and Vol 2, Parts 1 and 2 containing the Town records. These books are transcriptions made in 1940-41 of the original records. It is noted that the pages are not in date order, indicating that the original records would have been in loose leaf rather than book format. Summary of Court & Town Records Dear All, I give below a list of the items copied at SLC from the early Newtown (Long Island) records. 2. Chris Sackett
    3. Thurmon, The company president makes his point well, but methinks he was no genealogist. A competent genealogist would surely have cited his sources for the various assertions. What was his evidence for the Louisiana purchase? When did France conquer Spain & what was the evidence? What evidence was there of Columbus's privileges allegedly granted by the good Queen Isabella? What evidence that she was "good" and what that she was "a Queen"? What evidence of her getting the Pope's blessing? What evidence was there that the Pope was the emissary of Jesus Christ? What was the evidence for the claim that Jesus was the Son of God? And what that God made Louisiana? Always cite your sources! Best as always ..... 1. [SACKETT-L] Genealogy should be so easy !!
    2. Thurmon E King
    3. Hi, Chris has been posting some old land records. And while sorting through my files to clear some disk space I ran across a humorous article I have about tracing land titles. Too bad our genealogical research couldn't be simplified in this manner. Regards, Thurmon ---------------------------- Excerpted from the Empire State Surveyor, New York Society of Professional Surveyors, November 1990: One of the best examples of how ridiculous government paperwork can be is illustrated by a recent case in Louisiana. A company president was trying to buy some land in Louisiana for a plant expansion, and he wanted to finance this new facility with a government loan. His lawyer filled out all the necessary forms and applications and sent them appropriately. The government reviewed his application and abstract and sent the following reply: "We received today your letter enclosing application for your client supported by abstract of title. We have observed, however, that you have not traced the title previous to 1803, and before final approval, it will be necessary that the title be traced back previous to that year. Yours truly, etc." As a result, the lawyer sent the following letter to the government: "Gentlemen, your letter regarding title received. I note you wish said title to be claimed back further than I have done it. I was unaware that any educated man failed to know that Louisiana was purchased by the United States from France in 1803. The title of the land was acquired by France by right of conquest of Spain. The land came into possession of Spain in 1492 by right of discovery by a Spanish-Portuguese sailor named Christopher Columbus, who had been granted the privilege of seeking a new route to India by Queen Isabella of Spain. The good queen, being a pious woman and careful about title, took the precaution of securing the blessing of the Pope of Rome upon Columbus' voyage before she sold her jewels to help him. Now the Pope, as you know, is the emissary of Jesus Christ, who is the Son of God. And God, it is commonly accepted, made the world. Therefore, I believe it is safe to assume that He also made that part of the United States called Louisiana, and I hope to hell that you're satisfied."

    1. [SACKETT-L] Transfer of land Joseph Sackett to "unKell" Daniel Bloomfield 1684
    2. Chris Sackett
    3. Dear All, I have come across another land transaction, this one unusually from Joseph Sackett to Daniel Bloomfield. This may have been an adjustment of land to make more convenient and logical holdings, a practice which it seems from the large number of exchanges of land in the early Newtown records was quite common. This record is also of interest in that refers to DB as "my unKell daniell blomfeild". 3. GREAT! FYI, I just recently bought a 120 MB USB and Firewire external hard drive from Amazon.com for about $180. I use a laptop for all my school work and have been backing up all my data every couple of weeks to a desktop. That proved cumbersome. Since I was running out of drive space on the laptop, I decided to get a bigger drive. When I saw the price on this device (SimpleTech SimpleDrive HDD), I snapped it up. It's works great with all our PCs.

    3. Tom, I have the record of 2 May 1674 from the Town Records of Newtown. In fact there are two consecutive records on page 127, as follows: "Laid out by us R: Hunt & Jo: Burroughes for Joseph Sacket which Danell Blomfield gave him of his right 12 ackers liing in the east sid of Samuel Mores land there being a highway betwene them going to traines medo by the way six rod broad northwest his land is 40 rods and northeast 48 rods long may the 2: 1674 Sameuell Wood hath ten ackers the towne gave him at the northeast end of Joseph sackets land 40 rod square northeast 40 rods long from the end of Jo: Sackets land and 40 rod north west as Joseph sackets land lieth" The second of these records is obviously the one from which John Sackett's name is taken. But does it mean John Sackett or Joseph Sackett? I have difficulty trying to understand the record anyway. Anyone care to make a judgement on this entry? 3. Thurmon, Chris and Tom: The idea that Daniel was the first born of William and Isabel makes sense except there was a gap between his birth (1638) and John and Samuels baptisms (1645 &1647). Going through my stacks of paper I came across a list of Passengers for New England in April 1634 on the Elizabeth of Ipswich. Willliam Bloomfield age 30, wife Sarah age 25 and daughter Sarah age 1. No Daniel listed on this ship as a child of William. I vaguely recall reading that William's first wife Sarah died on the "passage over or soon after" but I could have that all wrong. I suppose it is possible she died in childbirth with Daniel. Even if he were a half brother I imagine he would be referred to as a brother in many records. Isabel's will does make it look as though he were her natural son. I have found entries on Ancestry.com that list Daniel as being the child of Sarah and William but have been unable to put my hands on any good source material. If anyone has access to Long Island Source Records from NYGBR compiler Henry Hoff may want to check for references to Daniel. It would be nice to know if he was a half-brother to the Simon Sackett that married Sarah Bloomfield. Now that I think about it he would have been a half-brother to both Simon and Sarah! Would that make him a double Uncle to Joseph? I guess I will have to keep looking. 3. Chris, If you remember, a short while back I learned that William Blomfield was a 1st settler of Middletown, CT (1650-1655) I was quite excited by this, as listed on the Plaque of 1st Settlers was his wife Sarah as well, although this would have been a major conflict with what we generally believe to be the timeline of William and Isabel. The original plaque was done in 1900, with a newer one done in 2000 when the founder's descendants association was formed. I had hoped there would be information on the Blomfield/Sackett families of Middletown but that is not the case. It seems the historians responsible for the plaque used the passenger list of the Elizabeth, listing William, Sarah, and daughter Sarah. They assumed wife Sarah was still alive when William settled in Middletown, thus listing her on the plaque. If I had been aware of this group in 2000 when they placed the new plaque, I would have made an effort to see that Isabel took her rightful place there. As I go through the association records, and the records of the Cromwell Historical Society, I hope to uncover something of the Blomfield household. 3. Dear Illyce, Patty, Thurmon, Part of my researches at the FHL, SLC was a study of the Newtown (Long Island) Court & Town Records. I have a whole pile of photocopies which I need to sort out. However a quick look seems to answer the question about Daniel Bloomfield. In a Court action at "Midlbourg" on 2 & 3 Feb 1668/69 there is reference to "The Testimony of Dannel Bloofield aged 30 years". This would give a birth date of 1638 making him the older brother of John (bap 1645) and Samuel (bap 1647). This same Court case makes it clear that Daniel and Samuel were brothers. As far as I can recall we do not know when William Bloomfield's first wife Sarah died, nor when he married Isabel Pearce Sackett. My guess from the wording of Isabel's will would be that Daniel was indeed her natural son, indicating that her marriage to William Bloomfield would have been in 1636 or 1637 (Simon died in 1635). Also among the papers I copied is an Indenture of 1694/95 recording the transfer of land from Daniel Bloomfield to Joseph Sackett. I'll type this & post it to the List. There is a lot of other good material in these papers, including the 1669 Court action brought by John Holden against "Samuell Blomfield for Calling him sonn of a whore ...". Regards, Chris

    3. Chris, In "The town Records of Newtown" 31 Mar 1669, Richard Hunt & John Burroughs lay out land for Daniel and Samuel Blomfield. This would further enforce at least a close relationship. The court documents putting Daniel's age at 30 in 1668 certainly points to his being the 1st born of William and Isabel. While looking through this same compilation of Records of Newtown, I came across a land grant record which mentions property north of "John Sackett's "land. The date is 2 May 1674. I couldn't place this John Sackett unless it was land owned by a John of Westfield or John of New Haven.
