Reed states (p15) "The children of Mr Sackett were Richard, John, Josiah Crego, Mary and Catherine." Reed mentions Richard's will but does not quote the item about Josiah Crego Sackett. It is uncertain, therefore, that the will was the source for his statement that there was a son Josiah Crego. Weygant states (p59) that he used as a source the History of Little Nine Partners, Isaac Huntting, 1897. There are other land transactions detailed in Eighteenth Century Documents of the Nine Partners Patent, Dutchess Co., New York, Dutchess County Historical Society, not listed above.

    3. Hello list members; While searching for information for the Augustine Sackett who invented the plasterboard I found some information for a daughter of 1521 Augustine Sackett which Weygant did not have in his book: Virginia Genealogies and Biographies, 1500s-1900s Virginia and Virginians, 2 volumes; c. 1888 Robert Alonzo Brock and Virginia A. Lewis Two-thirds of this work is devoted to biographical and genealogical sketches of prominent Virginia citizens. The majority of Volume 2, for example, contains sketches of 1000+ prominent citizens who were alive at the time of the book's original publication (approximately 1888). Virginia and Virginians, page 704 Rev. George R. Barr: D.D. The subject of this sketch is the oldest son of Dr. William Barr, who was born in Greenbrier county, (then) Virginia, and raised in Halifax county, Virginia. The father of Dr. Wm. Barr was Isaac Barr, who was born in Fairfax county, Virginia. When sixteen years of age, he (Isaac Barr) volunteered as a private in the Revolutionary Army, and continued in the service of his country till the war closed, and then received an honorabel discharge. He soon thereafter married a Miss Foster, and removed to Greenbrier county. Dr. William Barr removed from Halifax county, Virginia, to Stokes county, North Carolina, where he married Rebecca Ray. The son, George R., was born in that county, July 25, 1810. In November, 1823, the family made thier home in Abingdon, where Dr. William Barr died in 1858. Rev. George R. Barr has been twice married, his first wife Sarah, daughter of Jacob Rodefer, of Shenandoah county, Virginia. She was born in that county, became the wife of Dr. Barr in Abingdon, October 25, 1831, and died on March 12, 1874. eight living children are the issure of this marriage: Mary E. C., Ann Maria, John W., Margaret J., page 705 William F., David, Lizzie P. and Henry C. John, David and Henry gallantly represented this honored family in the army of the South, during the late war. John now resides in Abingdon, David at Smithfield, Virginia; Henry in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Barr maried secondly in New York, on June 7, 1877, Rev. Mr Bailey officiating clergyman, Martha J., daughter of Col. Augustine Sackett, of New York, born in Canandaigua, that State, June 10, 1830. The record of the public services of Dr. Barr shows a life devoted to the service of humanity. He was ordained a minister in the Methodist Protestant Church in 1842, was several years president of the virginia Conference of that church, a number of times representative to the General Conference and to various conventions of the church. From September 1, 1841, to February 13, 1873, he was associate editor and proprietor of the Abingdon Virginian, Charles B. Cole associated with him as senior editor. He has been twenty-two years consecutively secretary of Wateman Lodge, No., 219, A.F. & A.M., and for the last five years secretary of MaCabe Lodge, I.O.O.F., No. 56. -------------- Regards, Thurmon

    3. Wendy: According to the information I have this would be the company of #3941-Augustine Sacket b. 1841, son of #1528-Homer Sacket, m. Flora Skipp. A message posted to the Sackett-L: Subj: [SACKETT-L] Article Date: 10/03/2000 10:48:12 PM Pacific Daylight Time From: msackett2@stny.rr.com (Mike Sackett) Reply-to: SACKETT-L@rootsweb.com To: SACKETT-L@rootsweb.com In the December 1999 Old House Journal, Page 24 was this article. WHO THEY WERE...WHAT THEY DID No one perfected walls that go up faster than plaster until AUGUSTINE SACKETT patented the first gypsum board in 1894. By sandwiching five thin layers of gypsum ( a lightweight, non-combustible rock) between six sheets of felt paper, Inventor Sackett produced a 36" square wallboard that demanded neither supporting lath nor curing time. Sackett continued to improve his Plaster Board until 1909, when it was acquired by the U.S. Gypsum Company, producer of sheetrock. ----- Then, in the preface to Andrew P. Sackett's book about Frederick Plummer Sackett: Concerning a letter from: "Miss Edith R. Sackett of Warren, Connecticut. ... Her family bible recorded the birth in that house January 7, 1791, of Aaron Sackett, the third child of Homer Sackett born August 6, 1765, and Sarah Carter Sackett, born October 30, 1768. Aaron married Hulda Tanner and built a home in Warren ... She said that Aaron was the uncle of her father, Augustine Sackett, inventer of plaster board now manufactured by the U.S. Gypsum Co." The next sentence in A. P. Sackett's preface includes an error which he did not correct: "She also said her branch of the family is descended from Captain Richard Sackett. Aaron was definitely a popular family name among the Sacketts eighteenth century." Instead of correcting this error; he uses it to bolster his belief that the Aaron Sackett who married Phebe Hart descended from John Sackett, son of Capt Richard Sackett. How is that for giving more information than one asked for ?? 2. I can't believe that a descendant of Judge Sackett wouldn't want them. I checked Weygant for info on Judge Sackett and will bid if no one is interested. The auction still has several days to go. 3. I've had contact with two people who are connected to Garry Van Sackett's niece, Zade Thorne Sackett, m. John Arthur Lighthall: David Shelton Bill Compton But I have not had contact with anyone descending from the Judge himself. 3. Sorry about that last email I realized that I was trying a link on a forwarded email and thought to try to cut and past it and it worked. Anyway I bid the 19.99 on it but if a direct decendant would like it and I win the bid we can work something out. I just don't want it lost to the group (scared myslef a bit). 3. The problem is that the ">" inserter by the quote mechanism forced the last digit (a "2") down a line, yielding an invalid link. The item is still there (I just checked). > I am not sure what happend but when you click the link now > it comes back that it is not a valid item number and I > know it worked yesterday. 1. [SACKETT-L] Austin Sackett query
    2. Thurmon E King
    3. Hi; This past weekend I received a query concerning an Austin Sackett: Subject: Austin Sackett Date: Sun, 9 Nov 2003 2:34:12 AM EST From: "Kari Roehl" <kariroehl@charter.net> To: <thurmonking@netscape.net> Hello, I have recently started researching my husbands family. His g-grandfather, Austin Sackett was born around 1871 in either Wisconsin or Ohio. He married Mary Hicken in Wisconsin. They are on the 1910 Wisconsin census with their children Pearl, Floyd, Percy, Ruth & Raymond. He died sometime before 1930 (Mary was widowed living with her daughter and son in law in the census). Are you at all familiar with these people? All of the family has passed on so there is no one to ask. Thanks. Kari Roehl ------- End ------- According to a second note from Kari; Austin Sackett lived in Ashford Twp, Fond du Lac County, WI and he was listed as: "Sackitt, Austin 39 years, Born in Wisconsin, both parents born in Wisconsin. (last name spelled incorrectly). However, a cencus record of his daughter Pearl's family it states her father was born in Ohio." The full details of the census records for Austin Sackett in WI would help in this. I have two Sackett families that have Austin connections which could give rise to the name Austin Sackett; viz; 1.) #3771-Minerva Sacket m. Harman Austin of Warren, Trumbull Co., OH. 2.) Merrill Cleveland Sackett's daughter Mary Sackett, m. Fred Austin. According to a WorldConnect database: maymd #3778-Alzerah Sackett who died 16 Oct 1869 at Waucousta, Fond du Lac Co., WI had a son Silas Austin Sackett (not listed in Weygant) who was born in Trumbull Co., OH. This database also lists another son for Alzerah who is not listed in Weygant; viz; William F. Sackett. Any help with this query and the individuals I have mentioned above will be appreciated. Best wishes, Thurmon

    3. If anyone is going to Bid on these it would probably be a good idea to let the group know so that we don't bid against each other. Although this person is not in my direct line if no one else wants to I will bid on them to keep then for the group. 3. While checking the letter information, I found three Frontier Times issues that note a Henry Sackett as one of the founding Texas Rangers. One issue mentions the Sackett home near Jim Ned Creek. -- Ted > > > -------- Originale Message -------- > Subject: Sackett family > Date: Sun, 9 Nov 2003 12:13:32 -0500 > From: G.T. 3. Chris and all: I received a response from John B. Wolcott: From: "John Wolcott" <johnwolcott@mail.com> To: "Thurmon E King" <thurmonking@juno.com> Date: Sat, 08 Nov 2003 15:38:52 +0800 Subject: Re: Richard Sackett's estate Hi, Thurmon. This is the info I have on Richard: lived in NYC 1699, where he had a "malt house" or brewery About 1700 he was comissioned Capt. of the 7th Co., NY Inf. Regt. In 1703 he petitioned the govt. for permission to purchase from the Indians a tract of land in Dutvhess Co. called the Wassaic Tract. A patent for 7,500 acres was issued in 1704 to Richard Sackett, Josiah Crego, Joseph Sackett, William Huddleston, and John Mitchell. He was appointed Chief Revenue Officer for Southeastern NY. In 1703 he filed a claim for seizing the sloop, Betsey, for trading contrary to the law. In 1704 he was given license to dispose of property in NYC and Dutchess Co. In 1705 he petitioned the govt. for permission to provide timber for the Navy, which was approved the following year. In 1708 his family consisted of he and wife and two sons and two daughters (these were Richard, Mary, John, and Catherine) and 4 negro slaves. He settled in Dutchess Co. in 1711, and in that year was appointed Supt. of the Manufacture of Naval Storesd for NY and was a member of the 3 man court that regulated that industry. He served as the first County Clerk of Dutchess Co. from 1715 to 1721. He appears on the Crum Elbow (later named Amenia) tax rolls of 1740-1 with his sons Richard and John. Josiah Crego was adopted, I believe, probably related to the Josiah Crego who was a partner with Richard in the Wassaic tract purchase. It has been said that Margery had a previous marriage to a Stephen Crego, a mariner, but I have never seen evidence of it. Josiah and Stephen Crego are on the Crum Elbow tax lists of 1740-7, and Stephen only for 1748-54, and Stephen and Richard for 1755-7. I have no dates for Margery or info on her parents. Do you? I have his will somewhere but can't put my hands on it now. I got this from the internet "In the name of God Amen. Dec. 14, 1744. I Richard Sackett, of Dover in Dutchess, County, yoeman, being sick ...... leave to my wife Margery all Household goods, and the use of my lot, house and Orchards, during her widowhood, and then to my son John Sackett. I leave to my oldest son Richard Sackett 200 acres of land above his equal share as oldest son. I leave to my wife 50 acres to be at her disposal. I leave to my son John after my wife's decease my house, homestead, orchards and meadows and all my books. I leave to my sone Josiah Crego, and to the heirs of my daughter Mary Dean deceased, and to my daughter Catherine during her widowhood, and to my sons Richard and John the whole of my remaining estate, each an equal part, and they are to pay equally in defending the title. I make my wife Margery and my sons Richard and John executors." Although Josiah Crego was called a son, it seems to me he was treated differently than the other sons. I have no dates for John Crego, but if a birth date can be found for him, that would clarify his relationship. Please let me know what you can add to the info I have. Thanks. John Wolcott
