    3. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. I am only too happy to share what little I know. I find this all quite amazing considering that two weeks ago I didn't even know the name of my grandfather and now I have this tremendous family tree. It is very exciting. In any case, I am very new to the study of genealogy so please bear with me . . . Much of this information was obtained on Ancestry.com. I have verified some but not all of it using census data and death records. I have also posted my family tree on this site. It is listed under RSS with my name and email as a contact. 3. Robin: I notice that our expert on Sacketts in Michigan, Mary Lou Sackett, has posted the information she has for Dwight. Thank you Mary Lou. After I sent my response to the query I found your GED posted on World Connect in which you raise a question: "Also living in Assyria at that time are Henry (age 54 b 1815 MA), his wife Laura (b.1820 MA) and son Dewitte (born 1858 MI) - possible Dwight and Henry are brothers?" I believe that if we accept the idea that Dwight is the son of Asher Sacket, jr., then Henry was one of Dwight's older brothers. I'm including what I presently have in my database which does not reflect the information Mary Lou posted or that found in your GED on World Connect: Modified Register for Asher Sackett Jr.-592 First Generation 1. Sackett and Almira Phelps [Dudley is buried in Old Mechanic St. Cemetery, Westfield Mass.] who had a son, Dwight Sackett. However, Dudley and Almira were not married until 23 Dec 1827. The household of #592-Asher, jr was enumerated in the census in Westfield in 1820, 1830 and 1840. 3. Just found this and thought some you might be interested. The link for the page I found it on is at the bottom. Liesa Sackett, Earl L. Papers, 1897-1970 Sackett was a career naval officer who achieved the rank of Rear Admiral. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1919 and received an M.S. in engineering from the University of California in 1934. He was commander of USS Canopus which was stationed in Manila Harbor at the outbreak of World War II. Canopus was involved in the battle for the Bataan peninsula and was scuttled off the coast of Corregidor Island when Bataan fell to the Japanese on April 9, 1942. Sackett and his crew were taken prisoner; he was released and transported away from the Philippines aboard USS Spearfish in May, 1942. Collection contains several narrative accounts by Sackett of the Bataan campaign and the role played by Canopus; a transcription of a war diary of Canopus, Dec. 8, 1941-April 9, 1942; a transcript of the ship's log of USS Spearfish, April 30-May 3, 1942; maps of Mariveles Harbor on the Bataan peninsula; a scrapbook of photographs and newspaper clippings on Sackett's life and career (1897-1970); military medals; diplomas and certificates; biographical information; and passports. http://www.history.navy.mil/sources/wy/ahj.htm

    1. [SACKETT-L] Sacketts in New Philadelphia, Illinois
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Sackett Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ChEBAIB/225 Message Board Post: I am writing in search of anyone interested in a family of Sacketts who were listed in the 1860 census as residents of the town of New Philadelphia, in Hadley Township, Pike County, Illinois: Asa, a farmer born in New York, Ivy, born in Ohio, and their children George, John, Mary, Daniel, Asa, and Lucinda. I am working with a group of historians and archaeologists from the University of Maryland, the Illinois State Museum, the University of Illinois, and the New Philadelphia Association, to research the social history of this town and its past residents as part of our national heritage. We have recently obtained funding from the National Science Foundation as part of our efforts, and we will be engaged in a multi-year project of historical studies, oral history interviews, and archaeological investigations. If you are interested in this project, and recovering the national memory of this historic town, please contact us. We seek your input, as a member of the community who may have an interest in this effort, to talk with us about the types of questions you would like to have addressed through such research, and your thoughts and preferences on potential ways to honor the heritage of New Philadelphia. The story of New Philadelphia is both compelling and unique. In 1836, Frank McWorter, an African American who was born into slavery and later purchased his own freedom, acquired 42 acres of land in the sparsely populated area of Pike County, situated in the rolling hills bounded by the Illinois and Mississippi rivers. He incorporated a town, subdivided the property, and sold lots. He encouraged other families of African American and European heritage to move to the town and create a racially integrated community in the decades before and after the Civil War. New Philadelphia likely served as a stopping place for the "Underground Railroad" of enslaved African Americans who were fleeing northward from the oppression of southern plantations. The history of New Philadelphia serves as a rare example of an integrated early farming community on the nation's Midwestern frontier. The town's population reached its peak of about 170 people after the Civil War, a size comparable to many! Pike County communities today. However, by the end of the century corporate politics resulted in the death knell for the settlement: regional transportation investors routed a new railroad line to bypass the town. Many of New Philadelphia's residents eventually moved away and, by the early twentieth century, only a few families remained. You can learn more about the history of New Philadelphia, and details concerning upcoming phases of our multi-year research efforts by following the related web page links you will find at: http://www.heritage.umd.edu Thank you very much for your time and consideration, Christopher Fennell Historical Archaeologist

    3. Thurmon (for database), Weygant correction (I don't think we've had this before, but apologies if we have)- While looking at the Sekket records unearthed by Blanche, I also checked out the Joel Secket = Elizebeth (sic) Husted marriage record (22 Jan 1795) in the IGI. This date fits with the list of Joel's children as recorded by Weygant (first child Nathan b. Nov 1796). Weygant had Joel's birth as 1786 but it is now obvious that this was a typo. I have amended my record for Joel as follows: Born: say 1774 (Weygant gives Joel's date of birth as 1786 (p114) but records his first child as being born in 1796 (p169). The 1786 date would be a typographical error, with the birth dates of Joel and his brother Isaac being confused.). Married: Elizabeth (aka Betsey) Husted, 22 Jan 1795, Bangall, Dutchess County, New York (IGI; Family Search website (LDS Church) (www.familysearch.org) Marriage "Joel Secket & Elizebeth (sic) Husted 22 Jan 1795, Bangall, Dutchess County, New York".). 1. [SACKETT-L] Crego Mystery, etc.
    2. Harry McKay
    3. Sorry I have been so long in getting back to writing on questioned subjects by Chris. Numerous things got in the way. Busy time of year. First of all, I have no new information on the Crego mystery or any sources at the moment to use to discover more. We did not come to any firm conclusion. On the questions concerning information from the Barbour collection, I have not been able to get downtown to the Library to recheck and look up more statistics. Hopefully, I can do that soon. I do not have anymore data on Richard (#267) and John (#268) Sackett. I would dearly love to know where Weygant obtained the birth dates on Richard and John's children. If, say, John was born ca 1703, I would think he was married at about age 25-30. With what Weygant has, he was about late 30's to 40's which was possible. We do not know of any other Sackett that would have married Elizabeth Masten, and the Ritsert (Richard) Sekket born 5 May 1734 in the Reformed Dutch records of Ulster County would certainly fit if John had married about 1730. Ezekiel, if he was the Ezechiel Sekket baptized 19 June 1737, married Mary Atherton in 1759, so it would have made him 22 years old at time of marriage. By some McKay records, Mary Sackett, daughter of John Sackett, was born 7 April 1743 in Dover, Dutchess County, NY. She would have been 17 years old at marriage to Alexander McKay 2 Sept. 1760. Elisabeth Masten's father, Art (or Aard) Masten, lived in Ulster County first. Elizabeth Masten was baptized 13 June 1707 in Kingston, Ulster County, NY. Art and family later settled in Dutchess County. The first church that we know of in Dutchess County was in Amenia and marriage records started in 1756 and births in 1759. So, I am thinking, maybe children were taken to Kingston to be baptized or a minister travelled from the Dutch Reformed church to administer baptisms. The Masten family was Dutch. On the Elisabeth Sekket baptized 26 May 1739 (parents Richard Sekket and Maria Breedeth, the sponsors Jan Sekket and Elizabeth Masten), that baptism was in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, which was somewhat nearer where the Sackett's lived. I don't know how to reconcile it with Richard and wife, Mary, having twin daughters, Elizabeth and Catherine, born in 1751 and dying in infancy, unless the first Elisabeth died before these two were born. This is all supposition and I do not have proof, so if anyone out there has more on these families and proof of some kind, please let us know. I will keep looking, also. By, the way, the same records that show Mary Sackett's birth in 1743, show that she died Sept.1824. They came from the family of the oldest daughter of Alexander and Mary Mckay, Mary (McKay) Wadsworth. Another problem would be with her sister's, Elizabeth's, birth on 22 Nov.1742. The timing is too close for both births. Another mystery, unless Elizabeth's was a late baptism. Blanche McKay

    3. Barbara: Thanks for this link. I will put the picture and source along with your comments on the website. The picture of the elevated tracks reminded me of my truck driving days. I was dispatched to pick up a load in a section of Chicago which required me driving down a street under the elevated tracks there. The dispatcher warned me to make sure I had enough overhead clearance at each one of the metal beams supporting the tracks because my semi trailer was 13' 6" high and the beams are 13' 7" high. Some of the beams have reinforcing plates welded to the bottom of them which reduces the clearance and some of the streets have been resurfaced which reduces the clearance even more. If one does not pay close attention ...
