    3. A reply of sorts from Anderson's office! I'll leave it a couple of weeks to see if the great man himself decides to answer my question and then, if necessary, I'll try again. I'll be offline until 12 Mar - off skiing to France and Switzerland. 3. Hello Sackett Researchers; Ted Mudge asked me why there were no "Spouses Notes" included in the material on the website. I had not noticed that the notes were absent. So I thank Ted for bringing this to my attention. I had failed to check the "General Notes" box under the "Spouses Notes" check box. I recreated and uploaded files which now have the spouses notes for the descendants of Orlin Sackett, Thomas Sackett, and John Sackett. In the process there were several individuals added who descended from my mother's Uncle Charles "Charley" Samuel Sackett. This information was added as the result of a contact with Merle Duncan, one of his descendants. ----- Uncle Charley (1886-1968)----- Researching Uncle Charley proves to be an "interesting" task. He was married three times and, according to different family sources, abandoned his first two wives while they were still in bed following child birth. His first wife, Alice Hancock, had three sons by Charley and after he left her she divorced him and used her maiden name, HANCOCK, for her sons. Merle (Hancock) Duncan descends from this marriage. His second marriage was to Mrs. Mary (Mullins) King who had previously been twice married and twice widowed. Mary's first two husbands were also her cousins. She had one child, a daughter Leo King, (b. 1908) by her first husband, Levi King. Levi died around the time Leo was born and Mary married Levi's brother, George Washington King, who died in 1912. Mary then married Charley Sackett in 1913. [NOTE: The picture on Ted Smith's Sackett Family Album website of Samuel and Jemima Beeman Sackett, Mary and Leo King and Charles Sackett with Matt Ward and Grace King standing in the back; was taken at a double wedding. Charles and Mary; and Mat and Grace. Grace King was a sister-in-law of Mary. Matt Ward had been married to Ellen Rosilla Sackett, a daughter of Samuel and Jemima.] Following the birth of Mary's son, Eddie Lee Sackett, Charley left her. He remarried in 1915 to Kate Armstreet and appears to have remained with her until his death. Charley had four children by Kate. Mary Mullins King Sackett married for a fourth time. Her fourth marriage was to James Autrey. [James Autrey was related to Hiram Autrey who was a brother-in-law to my father, James D. King.] So then, my mother's Uncle Charley had 8 children by three different wives. One story told by the family is that Charley's son Eddie Lee was dancing with a girl and in their conversation he discovered that he was dancing with his half sister. Another interesting story comes from a daughter of Leo King. Charles was in the hospital when a nurse asked him if he knew a girl named Leo King to which he responded that he certainly did. Leo was the nurse and they had quite a time gettng reacquainted. Now ... Who said that researching family history is boring ?? Thurmon King TSFA Historian

    3. Marilyn: The identity of the Minnie Orton Sackett who married Ely Samuel Parker in December 1867 is something of a mystery. A while back I did some searching for her ancestry and came up with several different biographies of Ely Parker. Most of them state that he married Minnie Orton Sackett an 18 year old Washington D.C. socialite. One of the accounts states that she was the step daughter of a soldier who died in the Civil War: http://www.africanpubs.com/nativepubs/Apps/bios/0061ParkerEly.asp On Christmas Day, 1867, with Ulysses S. Grant as best man, Parker married Miss Minnie Orton Sackett (1850-1932) of Washington, D.C., the stepdaughter of a soldier who had died in the war. In 1878, Ely and Minnie had a daughter, Maud Theresa Parker (d. 1956), from whom Ely Parker's descendants are derived. Another account states that she was the stepdaughter of Lt. Col. William Sackett: http://www.geocities.com/amawek/ElyParker.html In 1867, Parker finally married. His bride was a young Washington socialite, Minnie Orton Sackett. She was white, the stepdaughter of Lt. Col. William Sackett, a New York Volunteer killed at Trevilian Station in June 1864. They were married on Christmas Eve; Grant stood as best man and gave the bride away in the absence of her father. The mixed marriage caused something of a stir in Washington society, however, and the couple was maltreated on more than one occasion by less-enlightened contemporaries. "..." Their only child, a daughter, was born during this less-than-affluent period. Maud Theresa Parker was an engaging little tomboy who was proud of her Indian heritage, and whom Parker fondly referred to as Ahweheeyo, or Beautiful Flower, in his native tongue. She eventually married Arthur Bullard, a member of one of the more prominent old Massachusetts families. Now for the problems I encountered while doing my research: A search of the Ancestry/Rootsweb databases yields one hit for Minnie Orton Sackett. It is a database of lineages of Native Americans and lists Minnie's father as Thomas Orton. In October 2002; Kenneth D. Horky submitted a query about Anna Sissleberger whom Weygant has listed as the wife of Col. William Sackett. In our exchanges Kenneth sent me copies of part of Anna's widow's pension file. Briefly, Col. Sackett died 11 Jun 1864. His widow Anna, age 30, made her widow's pension application [Application #67,696; Certificate #34,078] on 22 Aug 1864 from Evanston, Cook Co., IL where she was residing in the household of John and Zayde (Sackett) Lighthall [sister and brother-in-law to Col. Sackett]. Anna was approved for a pension of $30 per month on 16 Nov 1864. Anna states in her application that she married William Sackett on 25 Nov 1862 at "Washington City" by Rev. Charles B. Hall, Rector of the Epiphany Parish [supporting document attached]. Her name at the time of her marriage to Col. Sackett was "Mrs. Anna Amodier" [the supporting document signed by registerer of the church gives her name as "Anna Modio"] Anna was age 30 in 1864 which would place her birth at about 1834. Minnie Orton Sackett was age 18 in 1867 which would place her birth at about 1849 when Anna was about 15 years old. It would help if we had the complete pension file for Anna Sackett. And if we had the marriage record and account of the marriage of Ely Parker to Minnie Sackett in December 1867. Linda, Donald, You may like also to check the listing of the Westfield Vital Records on my website at sackett.org.uk . Look under Vital Records. The birth of Benjamin Sacket on 31 Oct 1698 is recorded. This listing was mainly the work of Ted Mudge from LDS film 0185474 which gives the Town Records (1669-1838) but it also includes a few baptism records from Church of Christ, Westfield, researched by Patty Chrisman. When you have sorted out these other records you are researching (Church of Christ, 1679-1836 LDS film 185469), or if you already have a listing of them, I would be pleased to add them to the present list. 3. Hello all, I am researching my husband's Sackett family who came from Jefferson Co. NY. I would like to confirm what I have found and also see if anyone on this list is connected to the family. Here is what I have so far. Lydia M. Sackett b. Oct 1861 Forest Illinois who is my husband's great grandmother. Her parents were James Sackett b. Jul 1822 in Sacketts Harbor NY and Ursula Makepeace b. 1823 or 1827 in Jefferson Co. NY. According to Ursula's application for 2nd marriage in IL, her parents were Solomon Makepeace and Jane Kronk (or Cronk/Cronkheit). On Jefferson Co. web site I found the marriage of James Noble Sackett b. 1819 and Ursula Makepeace b. 1823 and married 1844. I would like to confirm this information. Also who were the parents of James Sackett. I think they may be a William Sackett b. 1788 and Sabrina ? b. 1800. I hope someone on the list is connected to this family. Many thanks for your help. 2. Was Mr. Parker, Gen. U.S. Grants aid? If so, I remember reading in THE CIVIL WAR TIMES, about 10 years ago, that Col. William Sacketts (born 4-16-1839, Seneca Falls, NY.) step daughter married Mr. Parker.

    3. I found something for you from the Westfield Hampden Mass Public Records, Church baptisms 1679 -1836, It is the christening of a Benjamin Sacket on June 25, 1732. I bet it is your guy. He is the son of Benjamin and Thankfull Sacket. His father was Benjamin the son of John and Deborah. The father Benjamin was christened in 1698 when he was 8 mo and 30 days of age. these are from the public records of the Church of Christ at Westfield of all unto whom the holy ordinance of baptism hath been administered therein from the beginning 1679-1836 LDS film 185469. If this is your guy then write me privately and will send you the page as can not send attachments to the list or you can also order the film at the library. Now, I believe that this John and Deborah and I am not looking at my info are the John Sacket and Deborah Filley. Deborah was from Connecticut. But somewhere Thurmond may have that documentation on line. If not, I have more. The only reason I think that there is a connection is the names of his children. Benjamin, Thankful, Deborah, John. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Donald F. 1. [SACKETT-L] Interesting place family search & thank you all

    3. Hi All, I tried the technique of using the batch number and it brought up a total of 24 Sackett entries, 9 of which I had before. It is very clear I have a great deal to learn about using that search engine. I thank you all for the tips. I ended up spending a couple of hours searching both Sackett and Bartlett lines and added a huge amount of source data that I will have to run through LDS libraries and scan some films. I have also discovered some Aaron Sackett data that deals with his and Phebe's children, six in number. In this case the Batch number is not preceded by a letter and the extraction message indicates the data comes from the statewide indexes for Vermont and Connecticut. All births took place in Litchfield Twp.,Litchfield, Connecticut. Amanda Sackett 23 Aug 1795 Clarissa Sackett 26 May 1791 Phebe Hart Sackett 27 May 1798 Charles Sackett 23 May 1793 Huldah Sackett 25 June 1787 Elizabeth Sackett 08 April 1789 The batch number is 7450363 and the Source call is 0002949 Do I dare hit the batch number for this one? 1. [SACKETT-L] familysearch
    2. In case someone hasn't found this out yet, on the familysearch.com web site if you find someone, such as Aaron Sacket, and click on the batch number, would only do this with the batch preceded by a letter myself, a new search form will come up..if you then put a surname only in it will search that particular film for all the names indexed on that film. And of course putting in a full name would bring in all references to that name on that film. saves some time.

That is really a lot of research. My name is Marilyn Becker Wiegand. I am in hopes of finding a MINNIE SACKETT (with variable spellings for MInnie). She married a Seneca Indian by the name of ELY SAMUEL PARKER. Ely was born in Genesse Co., New York (1828-1895), somewhere around Aurora, NY. He married Minnie Sackett in 1867. When Ely died he was living in Fairfield, Connecticut. Thanks to all, Marilyn, mwgenie@strato.net

    3. Hi Linda, I went back out to Family search to see what else I could find and by plugging Benjamin Sackett in the father slot in the search engine and Dorothy in the mother slot I brought up eight children all extractions from the same film cited before. All are listed as christenings Thankfull Sackett------- 18 Feb 1772 Sheffield, Berkshire, Mass. Benjamin Sackett------- 27, Jan 1766 Same place Calvin Sackett-----------21 Oct 1776 Same place Isaac Sackett-------------25, Oct 1773 same place Elijah Sackett------------31 Jan 1768 same place Bewell Sackett-----------28, July 1763 same place John Sackett-------------16, Sept 1764 same place Deborah Sackett---------25 Aug 1762 same place Aaron Sackett------------14 Jan 1767 same place In some cases the mother is listed only as Dorothy but in others it is listed as Dorothy Buell. Also note that Sackett was spelled as Sacket. All are extractions so will at least give us some documentation. I haven't found a marriage as of yet but I did find children for Aaron and Phebe listed as extractions but they are in Conn. and as soon as I process everything I will post those names also. Thank you for the information on how to use the LDS centers, I once visited one but have never used their resources as most of my research is done on line,. Perhaps I need to get out more often rather than staring at my computer display. I used to use our local public library's resources for census data but since Ancestry.com and Heritage Quest made their census data available I have gotten spoiled. 3. Another thought While you have this film, see if you can locate brothers and sisters of this Aaron. Also, check to see if there is a marriage record. I notice in the ancestral file at the LDS (which is submissions not extractions) there has to be a few errors cause some have one thing and some have another. Which means they don't have any true documentation. So, my advice. Don't use submissision but go for the extractions, like what you found. I have the Westfield records and I will look and see if find a Benjamin and marriages etc. Linda ----- Original Message ----- From: "Donald F. 3. Another reply. When you find in those records am willing to bet you will go back to the Westfield Massachusetts records. Those Westfield records are quite good and real thorough. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Donald F. 3. They should have a phone number and at least a recorded message giving the hours. Now what you need is an LDS library. That film number, you will have to order unless you get lucky and someone has already ordered it and it is at that library. The main library in Salt Lake will ship a copy out. Then they should have a reader for you to find that record and a printer to make a copy. Then once you locate, you can go to the Family history library catalogue either there or at home and see what other records from that area are available. Land records, probate, court records, etc. Once you locate an ancestor, using the family history catalogue and finding other records that have not had the information extracted can lead to lots of finds. And, many times, these records have been extracted but the person doing the extracting missed someone so you might find them on a film or they may even have missed them when filming so you need to gain access to the original records. Hope that you find lots. Those Massachusetts records are usually pretty good. Linda ----- Original Message ----- From: "Donald F. 3. Regarding the extracted birth and christening records for Aaron Sackett. Go to your nearest LDS library and order the film and you can get a copy of this record . This will be a copy of his actual christening record. This is first hand documentation and comes from the family history library of the LDS Church. What they have done is gone out and filmed actual records and made them availabe to researchers. Linda Hare ----- Original Message ----- From: "Donald F. 3. Thank you, There is an LDS center near me and I will check them out next week. I don't know what their hours are but it should be posted some where at the center. I hope this is the data we have needed to find a home for Aaron. 3. Hi all, I was out beating the bush for my Aaron Sackett who I have always traced to Benjamin Sackett and Phebe Hart and I came across this somewhat interesting item at Family-Search. Now most of the entries at that site are submitted by people but some are extracted from original documents and this record is at least listed as one of the latter. I know there is a controversy about Aaron's parents so my research into his line is an off and on type of thing. This is what I discovered and would like input from other Sackett researchers. Aaron Sackett Male Event: Birth: Christening: 14 Jan 1767 Sheffield, Berkshire, Massachusetts Death: Burial: Parents: Father: Benjamin Sackett Mother: Dorothy Messages: Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record. The source records are usually arranged chronologically by the birth or christening date. Source information: Batch No: Dates: Source Call No.: Type: Printout Call No.: Type: C502881 1733-1800 0234573 Film 0883791 Film C502881 1793-1870 0250313 IT 1 Film None I am not sure if this has any worth but if some one has access to the films we might find something.
