Good morning! Apparently it is the search engine with links to the data that is being sold, not the data. Does anyone know if Pluma Alsafine Sackett was married, and if so, to whom? (I've seen her name as Pluma and as Alsafine). Thanks. Kathy
For those interested in the descendants of 583-Rolin Sackett of Crawford Co., PA. I recently recieved an original letter written in 1860 by Erastus Sacket to a Mr. Caruthers. The letter/note was sent to me by Mary Jo Sisson March <mjssisso@netscape.net> who said: "I purchased this original Sacket letter on Ebay, and am trusting yout to keep it safely. It has survived since 1860 (143 years), and when you receive it [in Washington State], it will have travelled from northeast Missouri to the west coast twice. The main I bought it from lived in Oregon. Somehow, Dr. Carother's old trunk, from the Civil War days, had made its way to Oregon, with all the voluminous papers still intact. As you will see from this letter, Erastus was writing to Dr. Carother. They were both wheelers and dealers in politics, and military matters, in their time." Mary Jo also sent a picture of his headstone in Combs Cemetery, Luray, Clark Co., MO. These items, along with some additional information for his descendants, are posted on the Sacketts of America website at: http://freepages.books.rootsweb.com/~teking//simon/pafg40.htm#11244 Thurmon King TSFA Historian

I am not renewing subscription to Ancestry.com (it has streamlined to nothing) and will not be buying Family Tree data - too many family history errors already exist on the available family trees - many of the authors refuse to change when accurate historical data complete with references are given to them. -----Original Message----- From: Nancy Cluff Siders [mailto:siders@cableone.net] Sent: Monday, May 03, 2004 7:18 PM To: SACKETT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: FW: {not a subscriber} Re: [SACKETT-L] FYI...Ancestry.com to sell Family Tree data -----Original Message----- From: John B. They are not burning the data on CDs. Something like a giant ancestral file with snippets from census and other of their databases clipped in. Everyone can still search for free the WorldConnect trees. I think one of the motivators has to come from all of the complaints about the number of duplicate results that you get when you do a search on the databases. I am more concerned that lots of bad genealogy is going to be compiled together and people will get lazy and not do their own work. john. Dianne, I have been putting ALL of the SACKETT war records online and would love to have a copy of the record. You don't by any chance have it scanned in do you? In not don't do anything yet I will make sure I don't have it first. I know I got through like C or D but not sure about the E's. For those who have not seen them they are located at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sackettmckayhistory/LiesasLineage/MilitaryRecords.htm (make sure you get everything to the .htm since it will probably wrap and part of it be cut off). The way the "P" and "h" are written; the "P" could be taken for an "I" but the "h" is obvious in this record. The guardianship paper for Phene is a little bit harder to read but the 2nd letter of the name is "h". The hand writing in the birth record could be quite different. Some time back we had a discussion concerning how many children Jonathan and Hannah had and what their names were. The names Irene and Phene came up and there was a problem because Irene was shown as having died in 1768 although both are shown as born in 1764: 8.(#651) Phene Sackett dau, Jonathan jr. & Hannah b. 1764 9. Kent vital records has her name as Beeman. > According to Gwen Boyer Bjorkman; Parke Beeman and Anna Keeney had a daughter, Eunice Beeman who married, 9 Mar 1774, William Sackett. Eunice was born in Kent twp, Litchfield Co, CT 1 Aug 1758 and died 11 Mar 1784 in Kent twp, Litchfield Co, CT, at 25 years of age. Parke Beeman was the son of Thomas Beeman and Phebe Parke. Thomas Beeman died in Kent in 1750 and Jonathan Sackett was a witness to his will on 22 Sep 1750. This indicates that Jonathan Sackett was a resident of Kent at that time. > > Whoever did the copying for the Barbour collection could have misread > many of the names, especially with files so old and varied handwriting. > > All for now, > Blanche McKay
Sorry I jumped the gun on some names sent yesterday and blamed Weygant for the error. On Thalia, the wife of Benjamin Sackett (#1508), her correct name was Moulthrop as Weygant has it. That family was numerous in CT. From now on I will make it as differences in names and place no blame. Does anyone know who a Robert N. Sackett was? He married Lydia Fowler, 16 Oct.1853, according to Kent vital records. They were married by Rev. William H. Kirk. Another mystery is #651, Phene Sackett, b 1764. In the Kent vital records, I find Irene Sackett, daughter of Jonathan and Hannah, born 12 May 1764, died 19 Oct.1768. In the book, Phene married a Jonathan Nichols. Any thoughts on this one? Yet another is William Sackett, #645. His wife's name is given as Bowen or Bowman in the book. Kent vital records has her name as Beeman. Whoever did the copying for the Barbour collection could have misread many of the names, especially with files so old and varied handwriting. All for now, Blanche McKay
The more I look at Charles Weygant's book on the Sackett family, the more errors I find. It may not have been entirely his fault, as the spelling of names was varied back in that day. And, he did an outstanding job for his day. I just wish we could locate his original papers (if they still exist). For #1508-Benjamin Sacket, Jr., of Warren, son of Benjamin and Betsey (Eldred) Sacket, the Litchfield, Ct. vital records have that he married Thalia Mounthrop, of Litchfield, on 31 Oct.1827. They were married by Rev. Hart Talcott. For #1509, Orphea Sacket, his sister, the Warren vital records state that Orpha Sacket, of Warren, married Daniel E. Brimsmade, of Washington, on 3 May 1837. They were married by Rev. Fosdic Harrison, of Bethlehem, CT. Weygant has that Orphea (or Orpha) married Daniel E. Brinswold. In the index, it is spelled Brainswald and on page 249, it is spelled Brainswold. In a recent message from Thurman about the Church of Christ in Warren, he mentioned the name Daniel Brinsmade. Daniel was a minister in the Washington (first called Judea), Ct. area from 1749 until 1793 when he died. Several of the Mckay ancestors were married by him. He is buried in the Judea Cemetery. I believe that the Daniel who married Orpha was probably a descendant of Rev. Daniel Brinsmade. If anyone has more information on this, let us know. All for now. Blanche McKay
Ed: It appears that Joel Bascom Sackett had a varied background. His headstone lists him as Rev. Joel B. Sackett and the following quote gives a bit about the Doctor: "Joel was a Christian minister of the Camelite sect. At times he also functioned as a doctor. Joel died February 1, 1904, at a place called Little Prairie Round just west of Marcellus, Michigan and he was buried at the Little Prairie Round Cemetary." - [Andrew P. -----Original Message----- From: Harry McKay [mailto:bhmckay5743@juno.com] Sent: Sunday, April 25, 2004 3:38 PM To: SACKETT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [SACKETT-L] Connecticut Sackett's To Chris, I am sorry I have been so long in answering some questions you had back in January. Yesterday was the first opportunity for me to get to the downtown library to look again at the Barbour collection. They have 55 books of vital records from different towns in CT. Not included is New Haven which is in other books. The first question you asked was if Margery Sackett (#709) and David Green plus Mary Sackett (#710)and Israel Canfield were married in New Milford. All I can say is that both marriages are in New Milford vital records, VOL. LR7, page 27. It does not state that they were from any other place, so I assume the ceremonies did take place in New Milford. Children listed for Israel and Mary in the New Milford records are different than what is in Weygant's book. They are as follows: 1. Mary Canfield, b. 11 Jan.1759 2. Israel Canfield, b. 2 Feb.1761 3. Catherine Canfield, b. 29 Mar.1764 4. Salvanus Canfield, b. 11 Aug.1765 5. Urania Canfield, b. 29 May 1768 6. Anne Canfield, b. 3 Oct.1771 7. Sackett Canfield, b. 19 May 1774 On Rebecca Sackett's (#627) marriage to Salmon Carrington, it just says in the New Milford records, VOL. LR12, page 2, that Salmon Carrington, of New Milford, married Rebecca Sackett, of Westfield, on 6 Nov.1771. So, I don't know where the marriage took place since it was in Westfield records, also. Something I ran into in Berlin, CT. vital records was the marriage of a Rev. Seth Sackett, of Warren, to Hetty D. Galpin, of Berlin, on 19 Oct.1831. I could not find a Seth in Weygant's book that matched this Seth. But, I happened to copy the Warren vital records from that book. Homer Sackett (#657) married Sarah Carter 19 Aug.1787. A Seth Sackett was born in Warren on 6 Feb.1800, son of Homer and Sarah. He is not in Weygant's book under Homer, but we have a Sarah (#1526) born on that date and marrying a Harriet Griffin. Obviously a mistake, but her marriage is correct to Frederick Starr on page 253. They were married in Warren on 7 Nov.1822. Also, Seth is on page 253 as #1527. Whether the Hetty Galpin is the same as Harriet Griffin, I do not know, but I suspect it is. I do not remember this being on before. If it was, sorry! Children listed for Homer and Sarah Sackett in the Warren vital records were: 1. Theron Sackett, b. 19 Jan.1788 2. Augustin Sackett, b. 24 Apr.1789 3. Aaron Sackett, b.7 Jan.1791 4. Aurilla Sackett, b. 30 Nov.1792 (Arrilla m. Adonoram Curtis 26 Sep.1818) 5. Polly Sackett, b. 13 Jun.1794 6. Orange Sackett, b. 21 Apr.1796 7. Sarah Sackett, b.23 Jan.1798 8. Seth Sackett, b. 6 Feb.1800 9. Homer Sackett, b.8 Dec.1801 Number 4 is spelled both ways in the records. Adonoram is Adiniram in the book. A correction from Weygant's book, if it hasn't been caught, is that Aaron Sackett, #647 in the index, should be page 108, not 158. Seth, above, is not in the index, also, but should be included on pages 159 and 253.
