Sackett of this city, who died last week, had a benevolent heart and was a strong believer in the best possible education for the young. She had lived here many years, had watched the work of Carroll College and believed that it was good. She decided to assist that work to the best of her ability and she made her will, giving a legacy of $5,000 to the Trustees of Carroll for the benefit of that institution. > > Under these circumstances she was naturally interested in whatever concerned the interests of the College, and during one summer she heard and read so much about foot-ball in the school that she decided to see a game for herself and ascertain what it was like. > > HORRIFIED AT THE GAME. > So in the early autumn after the games were started she drove out one day to see a game between the College and a visiting eleven. She was astonished and horrified at what she saw. Her ideas of sport had never included the rough-and-tumble fury of foot ball. She was a fragile woman and the rough contest between the long-haired kickers and punters seemed to her merely an arrangement for maiming and killing those who engaged in it. She had no sympathy at all for the authorities of the college who encouraged such proceedings under the name of sport. She went home and sent for her lawyer. Under her direction he drew up another will which contained no legacy for the College, and she signed it, the former will being destroyed. So vanished Carroll's prospects in that direction. > > PROF.RANKIN'S FAVORITE GAME > It is a conspicuous illustration of the irony of fate that the game of foot ball which has been so stoutly promoted and upheld by Prof. W.L. Rankin, president of the college, should cost the college a large sum of money just at the time of her greatest need. Every cent that can be collected for the college now is wanted as it was never wanted before. > > Fifty thousand dollars must be raised soon if the splendid gift of an equal sum by Mr. and Mrs. Vorhees is to be realized. Sums of five thousand dollars to be devoted to this fund come occasionally but not often. This unexpected legacy would have been a most welcome addition to the fund. > > Prof. Rankin is a strong believer in foot ball, works hard to keep a good team in the field, and enjoys a game like the youngest enthusiast. He has several times written letters to the papers setting forth the fine points of the game and asking for it a cordial public support. > > Miss Sackett knew nothing and cared nothing about the theory of the game. She saw only its roughness and she found that conclusive. Her position was that an institution that fostered foot ball did more harm in that way than it could do good in an educational way. And so she cancelled her bequest to Carroll College. > > Warmest, > > Kari Roehl > > > > > > > > ==== SACKETT Mailing List ==== > RootsWeb blocks attachments. 3. Kari: Thank you for the information on the family of Squire Sackett. His name, dates of birth and death, place of burial, and his wife's name is all that I had. Information provided by Fred Sackett says that Squire Sackett was a son of Weygant's #610-Ezra Sacket and Sarah Hurd. Weygant stated on page 155; "Of their sons to daughters we have the record of but one." and he listed a daughter; Olive, b. 1805. Fred Sackett lists 11 children for Ezra and Sarah. PROF.RANKIN'S FAVORITE GAME It is a conspicuous illustration of the irony of fate that the game of foot ball which has been so stoutly promoted and upheld by Prof. Warmest, Kari Roehl

I have posted to the Chautauqua Co NY message boards lot of photos of tombstones of Jonathan and Phene Jonathan Nichols fought in the Revolution and was wounded in the Battle of Bennington. He served under Captain Moses Nichols of Thetford, Vermont. The following is a letter to Henrietta F. Nichols from her "Cousin Elizabeth," dated March 27, year unknown. Speaking of Jonathan Nichols, she said: "But quite an experience was his in 1825 when Lafayette made his journey through the country. At Westfield he stopped for dinner and Jonathan as a Revolutionary soldier was presented to him. After the French way he lightly kissed grandfather on both cheeks, saying that he loved every soldier of that war. Grandfather always wore his hair in a queue, tied with a ribbon, long silk stockings, buckled shoes and knee breeches, he thought long trousers were terrible. You can imagine how surprised this staid reserved old New Englander was to be kissed by another man. But he bore it bravely." Letter from Elizabeth Nichols Furman. The following is a quote from the State Papers of New Hampshire, Vol. XV, page 103, Revolutionary Rolls: "Payroll of Capt. Elisha Whitcomb's Company Regiment of Volunteers Expedition against Canada. Timothy Bedel as Colonel 1777-1778. Jonathan Nichols, Andrew Nichols, Capt. NICHOLS ,23 Mar 1801 died 27 Apr 1883 Moscow Co . Ohio married to Favilla CASS in Ripley NY 1880 WISEMAN C. NICHOLS, Cardington; has for the past twenty-five years been prominently identified with the best interests of Morrow Co. Jonathan Nichols, his father, was born in Bolton, Mass., July 25, 1754, and when a small boy, went with his parents to Thetford, Orange Co., Vt. He was a soldier of the Revolutionary war, and fought with General Stark at the battle of Bennington; he was wounded, and for the last few years of his life drew a pension. He was a man of much more than ordinary ability, and held during his life-time the offices of Sheriff and Surveyor of Orange Co. He was married to Miss Phene Sackett, about 1790; she was born in Kent, Litchfield, Co., Ct., Feb. 17, 1767; when a girl she went with a married sister to Orange Co., Vt., where she engaged in teaching school. The lineage of the Sacketts can be traced back to 1597, to England, their native country; their coming to America dates back nearly three hundred years. Wiseman is the fifth of eight children; they were all married, and at one time were all with their mother and wives, members of the First Presbyterian Church, of Ripley, New York; of de number, Wiseman is 'the only surviving one. On Oct. 9, 1813, his father, with his family, ten in all, started for the west in a wagon drawn by three horses, with a capital of $54 in cash. It being late in the season, and the roads bad, the family walked more than half way. They were five weeks on their journey, and had but 12 1/2 cts. in their purse on their arrival; Wiseman's boyhood was passed assisting his father in the summer, and attending school in the neighborhood during the winter; on the 22nd, of Oct. 1829, he was married to Miss Fivilla, eldest daughter of Joseph and Tabitha (Day) Cass. She was born in Stratford, N. H., Feb. 17, 1811. They have had six children, four of whom are living. Forty years of Mr. Nichols life, including his boyhood, has been spent in agricultural pursuits; he followed carpentering for six years, and taught school eight terms; was in the mercantile business three years; was for three years sheriff; and three years mayor of Cardington, and for eighteen years a justice of the peace. He remembers very distinctly the eclipse of 1806, also the cola season of 1816, when there was snow or ice every month of the year. His first vote was given for William B. Rochester, "Bucktail candidate " for Governor of New York. He voted with the Democratic party until 1840, when he gave his vote for Gen. Harrison, since which time he has voted with the Whig and Republican parties. On coming to Cardington Mr. and Mrs. Nichols connected themselves with the M. E. Church, of which they are still members 1880 HISTORY OF MORROW COUNTY OHIO Children a Clifton Melvin Nichols b: 14 JUN 1830 in Westfield, Orange, New York b oseph Cass Nichols b: 29 JAN 1833 c Marietta Fivilla Nichols b: 15 DEC 1835 in Waterville, Oneida, New York d Franklin Cass Nichols b: 19 FEB 1838 e Amelia Frances Nichols b: 25 JUL 1842 in Portland, New York f Joseph Wiseman Nichols b: 27 OCT 1844 in Portland, New York 6 Chloe NICHOLS , c 1803 Death: 22 JUN 1832 m Asa YOUNG YOUNG lot M 32 East Ripley Cemetery Chloe Wife of Asa YOUNG dau of Jonathon and Phene or Phebe NICHOLS died 7/22/1832 ae 29 7, Jonathan Sackett Nichols b ca 1804 ,Son JoHnathan Sackett NICHOLS b 29 AUG 1805 Thetford Twp, Orange, Vermont m Elizabeth DICKSON b c 1812 Ripley Ny In 1850 Westfield census Johnathan S NICHOLS 45 is here wife Elizabeth 37 Sarah E 15, Helen M 13 I found the name spelled this way in several records We have the photo of this man from a IDENTIFIED family album but not much else on him seeking any 8. 3. The Daily Commonwealth, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin June 18, 1913 Shoots His Wife And Then Suicides Arthur J. Sackett Slays During Insane Fury DIVORCE ACTION PENDING Alleged Infidelity Of Young Wife And Loss Of Position Results in Baleful Tragedy. Crazed by constant brooding over trouble growing out of an estrangement with his wife against whom he had instituted divorce proceedings, Arthur J. Sackett, a son of Mrs. H.T. Sackett, 157 Sheboygan street, shot and mortally wounded his wife and then turned the revolver on himself Tuesday night on a Washington, D.C. thoroughfare. Both died in a hospital within an hour. News of the tragedy reached the Sackett home on Sheboygan street this morning, completely prostrating Mrs. Sackett. A daughter, Miss Ruth, is away in Chicago and the news of the affair will probably be withheld until her return home. Inquiry at the Sackett home this morning elicited the information that Arthur J. Sackett and his wife have been living apart since January when he began divorce proceedings. Mrs. Edward Kent of this city, while in Washington several weeks ago, had a long talk with Mr. Sackett in which he revealed to her the details of his domestic entanglement. “From what Arthur told me,” said Mrs. Kent, “I don’t blame the boy for leaving her.” It is also stated that Mr. Sackett was very fond of his wife, whom he married when she was 18 years of age. The couple have been married for five years and have two children, a boy and a girl. Mrs. Sackett was a Washington girl, her parents residing in that city at the present time. Up to January Mr. Sackett occupied a position of importance in the government service but the domestic troubles caused him to lose his position. The loss of position which held out splendid opportunities for Mr. Sackett, coupled with his home troubles, are believe to have preyed upon his mind to such an extent that meeting his wife on the street his mind gave way and the slaying followed. Athur (typo in text) spent his boyhood in Fond du Lac and was known among his intimates as “Pat”. He left here some years ago and located at Washington, where he entered the government service. It was there that he met the girl that he subsequently married. Mr. Sackett was in Fond du Lac last fall, at the time of the death of his father, Dr. Howard T. Sackett, which took place October 7. He was accompanied here by his daughter, who was then three years of age.

    3. Kari and all: The census information for the family of Noadiah Sackett raises a question about something in Weygant's book On page 303 Weygant states that Caroline, "was married May 24, 1855, at Woodstock, McHenry County, Ill, to George Clark, who died at the same place, Sept. 29, 1892." However, Caroline is listed in the households of her father and then her brother as Caroline Sackett in each of the censuses from 1850-1880. Never mind ... I just looked up her marriage in the IL marriage index and find this: CLARKE, GEORGE/ SACKETT, CARRIE/CAROLINE 03/29/1885 1/ 101 8225 MC So her marriage was Mar 29, 1885 not May 24, 1855 Gets to be fun, doesn't it? 3. Kari: It is as Liesa said; I love a challenge and a mystery. Looking for, and following the clues, is more fun for me than the work of compiling all the information I get from following the clues. (:>) The census info helped a lot. It is interesting that Howard is only listed with the family in the 1860 census and that he is age 9 in 1860. His brother Walter B. is the one born in 1853. From the obit and the census information, I've put together the family of Howard's father, Hiram A. Sackett [Weygant only has Hiram's name listed]: 1. Hiram Akin Sacket was born about 1824 in CT. He died in 1895. Middle name "Akin" taken from LDS IGI and is not confirmed. Funeral services will be held at St. Paul's Cathedral at 10:30 o'clock Thursday morning with interment at Rienzi cemetery. Dr. Sackett Has Sudden Summons Well Known Resident Dead After Brief Illness He Was Taken Ill At Oconto Was Former President of the State Dental Society and Prominent in Professional Circles. Dr. Howard T. Sackett, well known in professional and business circles of Fond du Lac, and a former president of the Wisconsin State Dental society, is dead at his home, 157 Sheboygan street. Dr. Sackett's death came as a great shock to the community, while the members of his family and immediate friends are stunned by the suddenness of his demise. Complaining of a cold, and cheerful in the belief that his illness was merely passing in nature, Dr. Sackett suffered a collapse at his residence at 8:15 o'clock Monday evening and he died a few minutes afterward. Poisoning due to nephritis was the immediate cause of death. Taken Ill at Oconto. Dr. Sackett, who has of late been traveling for the Combination Door company of this city, was on a business trip in the northern part of the state and while at Oconto Thursday evening he was taken ill. The doctor took to his bed and summoned a physician who remained with him part of the night. Saturday morning he had impoved sufficiently to make the trip home, and reaching here at noon Saturday he took to his bed, still believing that his illness was nothing more than a hard cold. At 3 o'clock Monday morning Dr. Sackett complained of difficulty in breathing and his respiration was labored from that time until his death. This condition gave rise to the report that the illness was pneumonia, but physicians have stated that the death was occasioned by poisoning due to nephritis. Born at Tallmadge, O. Dr. Sackett was born June 30, 1853 at Tallmadge, O. In his family were five brothers and four sisters, all of whom are living with the exception of one sister. He studied dentistry at Ann Arbor, Mich., and was graduated from the Michigan state dental school in 1879. He practiced his profession for two years at Kuyahoga, O., which was located near his birthplace, and in 1881 came to Fond du Lac and opened dental offices. Dr. Sackett practiced in this city for twenty-seven years, having offices for a greater part of this time at the head of Forest avenue. Four years ago he sold his practice to Dr. James Sorenson, and engaged in business. He served as president of the Wisconsin State Dental society in 1904 and 1905, and was at various times honored by being elected president of the local dental society. He was a member of the Knights of Phythias, being identified with the uniform rank of that order. He was an active member of the lodge and its trustee for several terms. Had A Large Practice. Dr. Sackett has always occupied a prominent position in local professional circles, and though no longer active in the practice ov dentistry, he retained membership in the local society, which is now planning to attend his funeral services in a body. Dr. Sackett, while having offices at the head of Forest avenue, enjoyed a large and lucrative practice. Was Married in 1882. On April 27, 1882, Dr. Sackett married Hattie A. Brown, of this city, who with two sons, Edwin H. Sackett, of Billings Mont., and Arthur J. Sackett, of Washington, D.C., and one daughter, Ruth, are left to survive him. Complete arrangements for the funeral were not made today but it was expected that services would be held Thursday. ------ The Daily Commonwealth, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, October 9, 1912 Services To Be Held At Cathedral Details of Dr. H.T. 3. Kari: Well, you've managed to "dig up" another "new guy" for us to make a connection for !! After I read your post, I spent several hours looking for a connection for Dr. Howard Treat Sackett. I believe I finally found the connction but will need a couple of census reports before we can know whether or not my theory is credible. The items in the articles you posted which give vital clues are; 1) He was born in Tallmadge, OH; 2) There were 5 brothers and four sisters in his parents' family; 3) Dr. C. C. Sackett of Tallmadge, OH was one of his brothers. In my searching I found the following family in the 1880 Census; Tallmadge, Summit, Ohio FHL Film 1255069 National Archives Film T9-1069 Page 418A Hiram A.
