    3. I am intrigued with the story of the Indian captive and her half-breed son who becomes a chief. It almost exactly parallels a similar story in Texas. Cynthia Parker was captured in 1836, raised as a Comanche. She had three children; her son, Quanah, became the well-known chief of the Comanches. Cynthia and her small daughter were brought back to live with her white family, but neither flourished and died within a few years. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, February 11, 2009 2:01 AM Subject: SACKETT Digest, Vol 4, Issue 21 > > > Plain digests are sent to users with all posts listed in one long email. > For > most subscribers, MIME digests will appear with all posts as individual > attachments. 3. Indians in the Sackett line A few years ago while researching census data in Cattaraugus County New York I ran across a number of listings for the Sackett line living on the local equivalent of reservations. The only name I recall at this late date is Redeye Sackett and as this data appeared on the Native American portion of the census I believe it listed the percentage of Native American blood. My mother, Rachel Canfield, was born on one such reservation and I was unable at the time I did the research to make a connection to any of the Sacketts listed as having Native American lineage though my mother was a direct descendant of Amanda Sackett the wife of Joseph Remington. Perhaps someone who lives in the south western area of New York might find this research challenge interesting since it is beyond my scope of research living as I do in the far west foothills of northern California. Anyway it is a thought, Donald Nolder ----- Original Message ----- From: "Alice Sackett" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, February 11, 2009 7:49 AM Subject: Re: [SACKETT] Indian Chief Sackett >I am intrigued with the story of the Indian captive and her half-breed son > who becomes a chief. 3. Tom, In the research I did concerning Chief Sackett came up with mostly the same sources that have been cited in the other messages relating to him. I am not sure that I have ever seen anything which identified the tribe he belonged to. During some of the raids in that part of the country were done through alliances between Indian tribes and the prisoners taken were traded among the tribes. It would be great if we could learn which tribe he belonged to and whether or not there was a tribal tradition relating to him. Thurmon

They eventually left and Elizabeth never returned, but her son grew up to be an Indian Chief and took his mother's name of Sackett. In later years Chief Sackett was well known around the area for his raids and he is mentioned by J.G. Holland in his History of Western Massachusetts as having attacked a detachment of soldiers near Heath, Massachuetts in 1748. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, February 08, 2009 8:47 AM Subject: [SACKETT] Indian Chief Sackett > While doing some research on Colonial Fort # 4 in New Hampshire, reference > was made to a "Half-Blood" Chief Sackett and a raid near the fort on June > 26, 1748. 1. [SACKETT] Indian Chief Sackett
    2. While doing some research on Colonial Fort # 4 in New Hampshire, reference was made to a "Half-Blood" Chief Sackett and a raid near the fort on June 26, 1748. Chief Sackett was noted as a descendant of a captive taken from Westfield , MA in a raid. References were in: "The Line of Forts", Michael D. Coe "The History of Sudbury MA, 1638-1889, pg 323 "History of the Indian Wars" Herny Trumbull & Eleazer G. House " Westfield and It's Historic Influence, 1669 - 1919", John Hoyt Lockwood, pg 368 refers to "a daughter of the 2nd wife of Mr. Sackett was taken captive by the indians and carried to the northwestern part of New York, married and stayed....." John Sackett of Westfield , 1632 - 1719, married Sarah Stiles about one year after the death of his 1st Wife Abigail Hannum . I don't see any children listed in Weygant for the 2nd marriage. I didn't investigate Sarah Stiles age when she married John Sackett in 1691, so don't know if it was possible they had children. perhaps this was discussed already but I don't recall that it. Tom

    3. This is very interesting. In looking up Sarah Stiles in my database, I find that I have photographed pages of a manuscript titled "Our Family Heritage of Sackett, Tunison, French and Wonser Families," by Ruth Wonser McCormick, which I found at NEHGS in Boston. She includes a transcribed copy of John Sackett's will, which isn't in Thurmon's database, and a fairly detailed account of the early history of Westfield. It describes Indian attacks in 1675-76, during King Philip's War, and talks about Indian attacks during Queen Anne's War in 1702-03, but she doesn't mention any children of John and Sarah Sackett being captured by Indians. She does mention captives being taken and some of them held for a couple of years in Canada before being released, but no names, and no reference to a girl who was never released. This manuscript also includes the story of a half-breed Sackett descendant during the French and Indian Wars, and cites "Westfield and Its Historic Influences" as the source. McCormick suggests, however, that "it is possible that the youngest child of John and Mehitable Sacket, Mary, who was born in 1715, was kidnapped by Indians during the French and Indian wars." So she is refering to John Sackett, Jr., not John, Sr. Thurmon, I would like to get these photos of the manuscript pages to you so you can see if there is additional info you can use in the database. There are some Wonsers in our database, so maybe you already have most of her information. I didn't photograph any pages after she finished talking about Sacketts. I am assuming there are no copyright problems if I send them to you. I could try sending them as e-mail attachments, or maybe it would be easier if I print them out and mail them to you. They are mostly around 400 KB in size. What do you think? 3. Chris, I have forwarded your message to my niece and her husband in England, asking them to support the petition and to show it to anyone else they know who might have an interest in genealogy and family research. Maybe other U.S. members also have friends and family in the U.K.?
